Overview

Gyromitra brunnea, long known also as Gyromitra fastigiata, is the gabled false morel of eastern and midwestern North American hardwood forest. Its common names describe its geometry: the cap is not a compact brain but a set of two to four broad lobes that rise and flare outward like the pitched planes of a gabled roof, or droop like a pair of ears.

Among Gyromitra species it is one of the largest and most architecturally striking, with rich chestnut to reddish-brown lobe surfaces set off by pale, often whitish, wavy margins and a thick, white, deeply ribbed stalk. Mature specimens sitting in spring leaf litter are conspicuous from several metres away.

The genus sits in the family Discinaceae within the Pezizales, the cup-fungus order. In evolutionary terms these fungi are elaborated cups: the fertile spore-bearing layer that would line the inside of a simple cup has here been thrown into folds and lobes and lifted onto a stalk, which increases fertile surface area and improves spore release.

How to identify it

Cap

The fertile head is 5-15 cm across and consists of two to four broad, wavy lobes that fold and flare, meeting along raised ridges so that the outline suggests a gable or a pair of drooping ears. The upper surface is smooth to shallowly wrinkled rather than densely convoluted, and is warm chestnut, reddish-brown or dark cinnamon-brown. Lobe margins are typically paler, whitish to cream, and are free and often lifted or curled rather than fused to the stalk. The underside is whitish and smooth to faintly downy.

Stipe

The stalk is stout, 3-10 cm tall and 2-5 cm thick, white to cream, and conspicuously ribbed, furrowed or lumpy on the outside. Cut lengthwise it shows several irregular chambers separated by folds of white tissue rather than one clean hollow, and the base may be enlarged and lobed.

Flesh & spore deposit

The flesh is white, brittle and moderately thick, with no marked colour change when cut. A spore deposit is white to pale cream; microscopically the spores are elliptical with distinct pointed projections at each end, a helpful character within the genus.

Where and when it grows

The gabled false morel grows on the floor of rich deciduous and mixed woodland, on soil, leaf litter and humus, frequently in the neighbourhood of decaying hardwood logs, stumps and buried wood. Typical settings include bottomland and slope forests of oak, hickory, maple, beech, elm and tulip poplar, and ravine woodland with a deep moist litter layer. Fruiting bodies appear singly, scattered or in small groups.

Its season is spring, broadly overlapping with the local morel season, generally from mid to late spring once soils have warmed. It is best known from eastern and midwestern North America, from the Appalachians and the Ohio Valley west through the Ozarks and the upper Midwest, with additional records elsewhere in temperate deciduous forest.

Ecological role

This species behaves as a saprotroph on woody and leafy debris, working through buried hardwood, decaying root systems and humified litter in rich forest soils. Its recurring appearance around old stumps and fallen trunks reflects that substrate preference, even when the fruiting bodies emerge from apparently bare soil some distance from visible wood.

Spores develop in asci carpeting the upper surface of the lobes and are discharged into the air; the raised, flaring lobe geometry lifts that fertile surface above the litter and exposes it to air movement, which is the functional reason for the fungus's elaborate shape. Spring fruiting exploits the moist window between snowmelt or spring rain and canopy closure. Within the hardwood forest the fungus contributes to the breakdown of coarse woody debris and to the release of nutrients into the spring soil.

Similar species

Gyromitra korfii is the closest comparison in the same forests: its head is more compactly rounded and lumpy with folds that hug the stalk, rather than opening into broad flaring lobes with pale free margins. Gyromitra caroliniana is much larger and darker, with a densely and deeply convoluted, wrinkled surface rather than smooth flaring planes, and a massive furrowed stalk.

Gyromitra esculenta is smaller, reddish-brown, and finely brain-like, with folds fused to the stalk and a comparatively slender build. Gyromitra infula has a similar saddle geometry but fruits in autumn on rotting conifer wood, is smaller, and has a smooth cylindrical stalk instead of a thick ribbed one. True morels are separated by their honeycomb of pits and ridges and their single continuous hollow interior.
