A small, ringed, tawny-brown wood-rotting agaric with a strongly hygrophanous cap and a rusty spore print, fruiting in troops on decaying logs and mossy stumps.

Overview

Galerina marginata is the best known member of a genus of small brown agarics placed in the Hymenogastraceae. Most Galerina species are tiny, delicate mossland fungi with conical caps and rusty spores, but G. marginata is comparatively robust, grows on wood, and carries a distinct membranous ring on the stipe, which sets it apart from its slighter relatives.

The species has absorbed several names once treated as separate: G. autumnalis, G. unicolor, G. oregonensis and G. venenata were all found by molecular study to fall within one variable, circumboreal species. As a result the fungus is now understood as a widespread and morphologically plastic wood decomposer with a broad host range and a long fruiting season stretching well into cold weather.

Its distinctive features are the combination of small size, a markedly hygrophanous cap that fades in drying blotches, an ochre to rusty spore deposit, a thin ring high on the stipe, and a habit of fruiting in small troops or loose clusters directly from decaying wood, often half-buried in moss.

How to identify it

Cap

Typically 1.5-4 cm across, occasionally larger, convex at first and expanding to nearly flat, often with a low broad umbo. When moist it is a rich honey-brown, tawny or dull ochre-brown, faintly sticky, and the margin is finely translucent-striate. It is strongly hygrophanous: as it dries it pales from the centre outwards to buff or dull ochre, giving two-tone specimens with a darker outer band. The surface is smooth and free of scales.

Gills

Adnate to slightly decurrent by a tooth, fairly crowded and moderately broad. They begin pale yellow-brown or ochre-buff and ripen to a dull rust or cinnamon-brown. The gill edge is often slightly paler and minutely uneven under a lens.

Stipe

About 2-6 cm long and 2-6 mm thick, cylindrical, often curved where it emerges from the side of a log. A thin, membranous ring sits fairly high on the stipe; it is easily rubbed off and in old or rain-washed specimens may survive only as a fibrillose zone, usually dusted rusty by trapped spores. Above the ring the surface is pale and smooth; below it is silvery-fibrillose over a background that darkens progressively to dark brown from the base upwards.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is thin and pale watery brown, with a faint mealy or farinaceous odour in fresh specimens. The spore print is rust-brown to ochre-brown; the spores are ornamented and roughened with a smooth suprahilar area, a microscopic feature that helps confirm the genus.

Where and when it grows

The fungus fruits directly from dead wood: fallen conifer trunks, stumps, sawn ends, buried roots and woody debris, and it is equally at home on birch, willow and other broadleaves in many regions. It particularly favours wood that is already well rotted and softened, often deep in moss, so fruit bodies can appear to grow from the ground when the substrate is a buried root or a moss-covered log.

It appears in small troops, scattered lines along a log, or loose clusters of a few caps rather than dense tufts. The season is long, running from late summer into early winter, and fruiting frequently continues after the first frosts when many other agarics have finished. The species is circumboreal, occurring right across northern and temperate Europe, northern Asia and North America, with scattered records further south at altitude.

Ecological role

Galerina marginata is a saprotrophic wood decomposer. Its mycelium permeates fallen trunks and stumps and breaks down the structural polymers of the wood, contributing to the slow reduction of coarse woody debris into soil organic matter. It usually arrives as a secondary coloniser, occupying timber that has already been softened by earlier fungal communities, which is why fruit bodies so often emerge from crumbly, moss-clad wood rather than freshly fallen trunks.

By fruiting late into the year the species extends the spore-release season of the deadwood fungal community, and its long, cold-tolerant fruiting period means it is often one of the last agarics visible in a woodland. Ecologically it belongs to the guild of small brown wood-rotters, alongside Kuehneromyces, Pholiota and Tubaria, that recycle nutrients locked in fallen timber back into forest soils.

Similar species

Kuehneromyces mutabilis, the Sheathed Woodtuft, is the closest match in shape and habitat. It typically grows in dense tufts and has a more sharply two-toned cap, with a paler dried disc against a distinctly darker water-soaked outer zone, and the stipe below the ring is covered in coarse, recurved brownish scales rather than smooth silvery fibrils. Pholiota species share a rusty spore print but are usually larger and have conspicuously scaly or slimy caps.

Hypholoma species such as the Sulphur Tuft grow in dense clusters on stumps, have greenish-yellow to olive gills and a purple-brown spore deposit rather than rust, and lack a membranous ring. Gymnopilus penetrans is brighter orange-tawny, dry and silky rather than hygrophanous, and has no ring. Honey fungus (Armillaria) species can share a ring and a wood habit but are far larger, produce a white spore print, and often show black bootlace rhizomorphs under the bark.
