Garlic Parachute Identification Guide

A small pale-capped woodland mushroom on an extraordinarily long, black, velvety rooting stem, tied to buried beech debris and betrayed by a strong garlic-like odour. This guide walks through recognising it and separating it from its relatives.

The First Impression in a Beech Wood

Garlic Parachute is a shape before it is a colour. Walking through a mature beech wood in late summer or autumn, you notice what look like small pale drawing pins suspended a hand's width above the leaf litter on stems so thin and so dark that they nearly disappear against the shadows. The caps seem to float. That disproportion, a modest cap of one to three centimetres carried on a stem that may be fifteen or even twenty centimetres long, is the species' signature and is visible from several metres away once you have learned to look for it.

The second impression arrives when you crouch. Disturbing the litter around a group releases a strong, unmistakable garlic-like odour that hangs in the air. In practice many people smell this species before they see it, particularly when walking through a patch and crushing fruit bodies underfoot.

Reading the Cap

The cap is one to three centimetres across, thin-fleshed, and passes from hemispherical or bell-shaped through convex to almost flat, usually keeping a slight central hump. Colour is muted: whitish, pale beige, greyish-cream or pale greyish-brown, generally darker at the centre and paler toward the rim. The surface is dry and matt, never slimy or scaly.

Two cap features are worth checking with a lens. First, the margin is finely grooved or radially wrinkled along the lines of the gills, a shallow pleating that becomes more pronounced as the cap expands. Second, the cap is hygrophanous, so wet fruit bodies look distinctly darker and duller and dry ones bleach almost white. The flesh is so thin that a mature cap has a papery, pliant feel and rebounds rather than crumbling when squeezed.

The Gills

Underneath, the gills are relatively distant, moderately broad, and attached to the stem or narrowly attached with a small notch. Their colour is whitish to pale cream at first, drifting toward greyish or very pale buff with age, and they never develop pink, rust or dark tones. Short gills of one or two lengths are interspersed. The gill edges remain even. Compared with the dark stem, the pallor of the gills is striking and adds to the floating-cap impression.

The Stem, Which Is the Whole Point

Everything decisive about this species is in the stem. It is five to twenty centimetres long and only two to four millimetres thick, cylindrical, stiff, tough and wiry, so that it flexes and springs rather than snapping. The colour is dark: chestnut-brown at the apex, deepening downward to blackish-brown or black over most of its length.

The surface texture matters. Run a fingertip down it and then look with a lens: the stem is finely velvety, pruinose or minutely downy over its whole length, which under magnification appears as a dense short pile. This velvet, combined with the length and the near-black colour, is the character that most reliably separates the species from anything else of the same size.

Now excavate. Do not pull the mushroom, because the stem base is the informative part and it will break. Scrape the leaf litter back with a knife or a finger and trace the stem downward. It roots deeply, tapering into a long pseudorhiza that runs several centimetres through the litter and soil before terminating on a buried beech twig, petiole, husk or branch fragment. Fruit bodies that appear to be growing from bare soil are always attached to hidden wood in this way.

Flesh, Odour and Colour Change

The cap flesh is thin, whitish and pliant; the stem flesh is fibrous, tough and brown to blackish, matching the exterior. Neither changes colour when cut. There is no latex, no blueing and no reddening. The mushroom is built like a Marasmius relative, which is to say it is leathery and resilient rather than fragile, and dried fruit bodies can revive after rain and look fresh again.

Odour is the one character everybody records. Crush a piece of the cap and stem between finger and thumb and smell it in cupped hands. The scent is strongly alliaceous, a clear garlic or wild-garlic note, sometimes with an onion undertone, and it persists in dried herbarium material for years. It is strongest in fresh, moist fruit bodies and weakest in old sun-bleached ones.

Taking a Spore Print

Use several caps together, because each is small and thin. Cut the stems flush, arrange the caps gill-down on white paper, cover them with a jar with a scrap of damp tissue alongside, and leave them six to twelve hours somewhere cool. The deposit is white to very pale cream, which places the species firmly in the pale-spored group and eliminates the brown-spored and pink-spored genera in one move. Microscopically the spores are ellipsoid to almond-shaped, smooth, roughly eight to eleven by six to seven and a half microns, and do not turn blue-grey in iodine solutions.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

This is a litter and small-wood decomposer with a strong preference for beech. It works on fallen beech twigs, leaf petioles, cupules and small buried branches, so it is abundant on the floor of mature beech woodland and on beech-dominated slopes, particularly where the litter layer is deep and undisturbed. It is much less common under other trees. Fruiting runs from summer through late autumn, following rain, and the fruit bodies are gregarious, coming up in loose scattered troops across a litter patch rather than in tight clusters. Because the pseudorhiza can be long, the visible spacing of the fruit bodies gives no reliable indication of how many separate pieces of buried wood are involved.

Separating It From the Closest Look-Alikes

Mycetinis scorodonius shares the garlic-like odour but differs decisively in the stem. It is much smaller overall, its stem is short, smooth, shiny and reddish-brown rather than long, velvety and blackish, and it grows on grassland litter, heath debris and conifer needles rather than beech. Seeing the two side by side, the difference in stem length alone is enough.

Mycetinis querceus, also known under the name Marasmius prasiosmus, again smells of garlic but is associated with oak litter, has a paler stem that is whitish-woolly at the base rather than uniformly dark and velvety, and its cap tends toward a warmer pale tan.

Marasmius rotula and its allies are white, with a distinctive collar around the stem apex from which the gills radiate, and they sit directly on exposed twigs rather than on a long rooting stem. Marasmius wynneae is paler lilac-tinged, with a shorter stem and no garlic scent.

Gymnopus and Collybia relatives can approach the stature but have softer, non-velvety stems, do not root deeply into a pseudorhiza, and lack the alliaceous odour. Mycena species are more fragile, with brittle stems that snap cleanly, more crowded gills, and usually a shorter stem without a long tapering root.

Finally, any long-stemmed pale mushroom with a rusty or pink spore print, a ring, or a smooth non-velvety stem belongs elsewhere regardless of how similar the silhouette looks.

What is the most reliable single field character?
The stem. It is extraordinarily long for the size of the cap, up to twenty centimetres, only two to four millimetres thick, tough and wiry, blackish-brown, and finely velvety over its entire length. Combined with the strong garlic-like odour, no other woodland mushroom of this stature matches it.
It looks like it is growing from soil. Where is it actually attached?

Which trees does it associate with?

How does it differ from the smaller garlic-scented Mycetinis scorodonius?
Chiefly by stature and stem texture. Mycetinis scorodonius has a short, smooth, shiny reddish-brown stem and grows on grassland litter, heath debris and needles, whereas Garlic Parachute has a very long, velvety, blackish rooting stem and is tied to beech litter.
