Overview

Amanita gemmata belongs to section Amanita, the group that also contains the fly agaric and the panther, all sharing a warted cap, free white gills, a white spore print, a striate cap margin at maturity and a basal bulb whose universal veil remains form rings or a collar rather than a loose sac. It is the palest and softest-coloured member of the group in most regions.

The cap is pale creamy yellow, buff-yellow or straw, sticky when wet, and sprinkled with scattered thin white cottony patches rather than the firm pyramidal warts of some relatives. The ring is thin and frequently fails, collapsing against the stem or vanishing entirely, so many specimens are found apparently ringless with only a faint fibrous zone remaining. The basal bulb is modest in size and finished with a narrow, free, upturned collar at its upper margin.

The species is genuinely variable and grades morphologically into Amanita pantherina, so much so that intermediate collections are routinely referred to as belonging to the gemmata-pantherina complex. Molecular work has confirmed that several distinct lineages hide under the name, particularly in western North America, where pale collections are common under pine and Douglas fir.

How to identify it

Cap

3-12 cm across, convex at first and expanding to broadly convex or flat, sometimes with a shallow central depression. The colour is pale creamy yellow, buff-yellow, straw or pale ochre, often a little deeper at the centre and paler toward the edge. The surface is viscid and shiny when moist, drying to a matt finish, and carries scattered thin white to cream cottony patches of universal veil that are easily washed away. The margin becomes faintly to distinctly grooved as the cap flattens.

Gills

Free from the stem, crowded, white to cream, moderately broad, with numerous short gills between the full-length ones and finely floccose edges. They stay pale throughout maturity.

Stipe

5-12 cm tall and 0.8-2 cm thick, white to pale cream, dry, smooth or finely floccose, and slightly tapering upward. The ring is thin, white and membranous but fragile, often collapsing onto the stem, tearing away or disappearing, so a faint fibrous band may be all that remains. The base is a small, rounded to slightly oval basal bulb whose upper margin bears a narrow free rim or collar, sometimes with one or two additional faint bands of veil tissue just above it.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is white and unchanging when cut, sometimes with a yellowish tinge under the cap skin. The odour is mild to faintly earthy. The spore print is white, and the spores are ellipsoid and do not stain blue-black in iodine reagents.

Where and when it grows

The gemmed amanita grows on the ground in woodland, favouring well-drained sandy or gravelly soils. In Europe it is found with pine and other conifers on heathy and sandy ground and also with birch and oak. In western North America it is common in coastal and montane conifer forest with pine, spruce and Douglas fir, while in the east it appears with oak, pine and mixed hardwoods. Sandy roadside banks, dune woodland and the thin litter of open pine stands are all typical settings.

In Mediterranean and Pacific-coast climates it can fruit from late winter and spring onward, and elsewhere it appears from summer into autumn, giving it one of the longer fruiting windows in the genus. Its distribution is broad across Europe, temperate Asia and North America, though a proportion of records represent segregate species within a wider complex.

Ecological role

This is an ectomycorrhizal fungus, forming nutrient-exchanging root sheaths with conifers and broadleaf trees alike. Its preference for poor, sandy, low-nutrient soils is characteristic of many section Amanita species, and it is often one of the more abundant ectomycorrhizal fungi in open pine woodland on sand.

As in other members of the section, the universal veil is soft and largely powdery-cottony rather than membranous. When the fruit body expands, part of that veil is lifted onto the cap as loose patches while the rest remains around the top of the basal bulb as a narrow collar and occasional faint girdles. Neither structure is durable: rain strips the cap patches and rough handling destroys the collar, which is why examining a fresh, carefully excavated specimen is essential to see the full set of characters.

Similar species

Amanita pantherina is the closest relative and is separated by its darker tan to dark brown cap, its more sharply and completely grooved margin, its firmer and more persistent white warts arranged in loose concentric rings, its stouter persistent ring and a more clearly defined collared bulb. Intermediates between the two are frequent and are often left at complex level. Amanita citrina has a lemon-yellow cap, flat buff patches, an ungrooved margin, a persistent pendulous ring, an abruptly rimmed turnip-shaped bulb and a raw-potato odour in cut flesh.

Yellow forms of Amanita muscaria are usually larger and a brighter orange-yellow, with a stem base bearing several concentric shaggy scaly bands instead of a single narrow collar. Amanita franchetii has a greyish-brown cap with distinctly yellow warts, a yellow-tinged ring, and yellowish veil material on the bulb.
