Giant Funnel Identification Guide

How to read Leucopaxillus giganteus in the field: huge white funnel-shaped caps in grassland fairy rings, crowded decurrent gills that peel from the flesh, and the mycelial mat at the base.

Finding it

Late summer or autumn, an old pasture, a wide grassy woodland ride, a park lawn or a rough roadside verge. From fifty metres away you can see a curved line of pale objects in the grass, and as you get closer the line resolves into an arc of very large white mushrooms, each one shaped like a shallow bowl or a broad shallow funnel. There may be two dozen of them describing a section of a circle several metres across, with the grass inside the arc looking greener and more lush than the grass outside.

That combination of arc-forming habit, open grassy habitat and sheer size is the first-pass identification, and it is a strong one. Individual caps are often 15 to 25 cm across and exceptional specimens exceed 40 cm, so a mature ring is one of the more imposing sights in temperate grassland.

Reading the cap

The development sequence is worth following through several specimens in a single ring, because young and old caps look quite different.

Buttons emerge convex with a strongly inrolled margin, looking like pale bread rolls. They flatten as they expand, then depress at the centre, and finally become deeply and broadly funnel-shaped, with the margin lifting and becoming wavy, lobed or split. The proportions stay unusual throughout: the cap is enormous relative to the stem, which stays short.

The surface is dry and matt, minutely downy or kid-leather-like when young, becoming smooth. In dry weather it commonly cracks into fine areolate patches, especially over the disc. Colour is white to cream, and it ages slowly through ivory to pale buff, pale ochre or faint tan, particularly at the centre and on weathered specimens. There is no viscid layer at any stage.

The gills

Turn a cap over and two things stand out. First, the gills are decurrent, running noticeably down onto the stem, which is what gives the whole fruitbody its funnel character. Second, they are very crowded, narrow and thin, packed far more closely than most large white mushrooms manage, with numerous short gills interleaved and frequent forking near the stem.

Colour is white to cream, dulling to pale buff or with a faint pinkish-cream cast in age. The edges stay even.

Now perform the test that names the genus. Take a thumbnail or a blade and try to lift the gill layer away from the cap flesh. In this group the whole hymenophore separates cleanly and easily from the underlying flesh, peeling off as a coherent sheet. In most funnel-caps of the Clitocybe and Infundibulicybe kind the gills are firmly continuous with the cap flesh and will not come away tidily. It is a small test that carries real weight.

Stipe, base and flesh

The stem is short and stout in proportion to the cap, typically 5 to 10 cm tall and 2 to 4 cm thick, roughly cylindrical or thickening slightly downwards. It is white, firm, solid, and finely fibrillose to smooth. There is no ring and no volva.

Excavate the base carefully. You should find a dense, felted mat of white mycelium binding soil, grass roots and litter into a solid plug that comes up with the mushroom. That basal tomentum is copious and conspicuous, and it is part of the reason a ring of this species leaves a visible mark on the turf.

Cut a fruitbody in half. The flesh is white, thick, firm and rather dense, with a slightly rubbery resilience quite unlike the soft flesh of the ordinary field mushrooms. It does not change colour on cutting: no reddening, no blueing, no blackening. There is no latex.

The smell is distinctive if not always easy to name. Fresh material is usually mealy or farinaceous, like crushed cucumber or fresh flour, sometimes with a sweetish component; old or waterlogged specimens develop a heavier, sourer note.

Taking a spore print

A cap this size makes an easy and generous print. Cut one free, lay it gills-down on dark paper or on a strip of black card, cover it to hold the humidity, and leave it a few hours.

The deposit is white to very pale cream. Use dark paper: a white print on white paper is invisible and this is one of the cases where getting the colour right matters, because the pink-spored Clitopilus and the brown-spored Agaricus species are both eliminated instantly by a genuinely white deposit. Under a microscope the spores are ornamented with small warts and stain blue-black in iodine, but the field-level white print plus the peelable gill layer is usually enough.

Substrate, season and ecology

Giant Funnel is a saprotroph of soil, litter and grassland thatch. It decomposes dead organic matter in the top layer of soil, and the outward-growing mycelial front is what produces the classic fairy ring: the fungus consumes and mineralises organic nitrogen, the grass just behind the front greens up, and the fruitbodies mark the leading edge.

Look for it in nutrient-rich, often calcareous grassland: old pastures, meadows, parkland, roadside verges, grassy woodland edges and rides, sometimes under scattered trees but not depending on them. It is not mycorrhizal and does not fruit from wood.

Season runs from mid-summer through autumn, with the main flush after rain in late summer and early autumn. Rings are long-lived and expand a modest distance each year, so once you know a productive site it will keep producing.

Separating the look-alikes on morphology

Infundibulicybe geotropa, the Trooping Funnel, is the commonest confusion because it too is large and rings in grassy places. It is buff, tan or pale leather-coloured rather than white, its stem is proportionally much longer and more slender so the fruitbody stands tall, and it usually keeps a low central umbo sitting in the middle of the funnel. Its gills do not peel away from the cap flesh as a sheet.

Clitocybe nebularis is grey to grey-brown with a bloomed cap, only shallowly depressed rather than deeply funnel-shaped, and has a distinctly clubbed stem base and a strong sweetish smell.

Russula delica and its relatives form white funnel-shaped fruitbodies, but their gills are brittle and shatter under a sideways fingertip, they are far more widely spaced, they often carry a bluish-green tint where they meet the stem, and the flesh breaks with a chalky snap instead of tearing fibrously.

Lactifluus vellereus and L. piperatus also make big white funnels, but cutting the gills releases a white latex within seconds, which settles the matter instantly.

Clitopilus prunulus shares the white colour and decurrent gills but is a fraction of the size, has a soft, kid-like cap surface, and drops a distinctly pink spore print.

Leucopaxillus relatives such as L. lepistoides share the peelable gill layer and white spores but differ in size, colour tone and habitat detail.
