A huge overlapping rosette of tan-brown zoned fans at the foot of beech and other broadleaves, with a fine white pore surface that turns black wherever it is touched.

Overview

Meripilus giganteus is the largest ground-level bracket fungus of European woodland, producing compound rosettes that regularly exceed half a metre across and occasionally reach a metre. The whole structure is built from many overlapping, fan-shaped caps radiating from a short common base wedged against a root buttress.

Its defining reaction is the blackening: the fine white pore surface, the pale flesh and eventually the cap surface all darken to grey and then black within minutes of being handled or cut. Older specimens are typically patched with sooty stains where animals, rain and passers-by have touched them, and dried remains are almost uniformly black.

Ecologically it is one of the most significant root and butt rot fungi of mature beech in Europe. Because it operates in the root plate rather than the trunk, arborists treat a large rosette at the foot of a veteran beech as a strong indicator that the root system's structural integrity has been reduced, even when the crown appears entirely vigorous.

How to identify it

Cap

Individual caps are fan- to tongue-shaped, 10–30 cm across, thin and flexible, with a finely radially fibrillose or wrinkled surface and a concentrically zoned pattern. Colour runs from ochre-tan and warm brown to grey-brown, darker toward the base, with blackened patches wherever the surface has been damaged. Dozens of caps overlap into a rosette 30–100 cm wide and up to 20 kg in weight.

Pores

The pore surface is white to cream and extremely fine — pores number roughly 3–5 per millimetre and are barely visible without a lens, so the underside appears nearly smooth. It bruises grey and then black within minutes. Tubes are shallow and run down onto the common base.

Stipe

There is no distinct stipe. The caps converge into a short, thick, often partly buried base attached to a buttress root or the root collar, so the rosette appears to grow straight out of the ground beside the trunk.

Flesh & spore print

The context is white, soft and moist in young caps, becoming tougher, more fibrous and leathery with age, and it blackens on exposure like the rest of the fungus. The spore deposit is white.

Where and when it grows

Giant Polypore fruits at the base of living and dead broadleaf trees and on stumps, arising from major roots and the root collar. Beech is the classic support in Europe, with oak, lime, plane, horse chestnut and other broadleaves also used; it is a familiar species in parks, avenues and estates as well as in woodland.

It is widespread across Europe, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean, and extends into western Asia. Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, usually after prolonged rain, and rosettes commonly reappear at the same buttress in successive years while the root system continues to decay. Dried, blackened remains often persist through winter.

Ecological role

The fungus causes an intensive white rot in roots and butt wood, degrading lignin as well as cellulose and reducing the affected tissue to a pale, soft, stringy mass. It behaves as a parasite on living roots and then as a saprotroph on the dead stump, and the decay column typically spreads outward through the major structural roots rather than upward into the trunk.

Because the damage is concentrated in the root plate, colonised trees lose anchorage progressively, and the fungus is a well-known factor in the windthrow of veteran beech. From a woodland perspective this creates canopy gaps, deadwood and disturbed ground that drive regeneration. The rosettes themselves are short-lived and rapidly colonised by fly larvae and beetles once past their peak.

Similar species

Meripilus sumstinei is the near-identical eastern North American species, sharing the rosette form and the blackening reaction; range and typical support tree — oak rather than beech — are the practical distinctions. Grifola frondosa forms a comparable cluster at the base of oaks and other broadleaves but has smaller grey-brown tongues on a clearly branched pale stalk system and shows no blackening.

Polyporus squamosus produces large tan caps with dark flattened scales and a short black-based lateral stalk, growing on trunks and wounds rather than in a ground-level rosette, and does not stain. Bondarzewia species, where they occur, differ in their thick, tough cream fans and their much coarser, clearly visible angular pores.
