An unmistakable white sphere that can reach the size of a football or larger, appearing in grassland and hedgerows. It has no stipe, no gills and no cap, and its interior ripens from firm white to a powdery olive-brown spore mass.

Overview

The Giant Puffball is the largest and most immediately recognisable of the puffballs, a group of gasteroid fungi that produce their spores inside a closed fruiting body rather than on exposed gills or pores. Mature specimens commonly reach 20-50 cm across, and exceptional individuals have been recorded well over 70 cm and several kilograms in weight. Nothing else in a temperate meadow looks quite like a smooth white boulder sitting on the turf.

It belongs to the genus Calvatia in the family Agaricaceae - the same broad family as the field mushrooms - which reflects modern molecular work showing that puffballs are not a natural group of their own but rather agarics that have abandoned the gilled body plan. Instead of forcibly discharging spores from a hymenium, Calvatia lets the whole interior mature into a dry spore powder and relies on weathering and rain to release it.

Because of its size, the Giant Puffball is often the first fungus a beginner learns to name with confidence. Its combination of enormous scale, absence of any stalk, and the smooth kid-leather surface of a fresh specimen make it distinctive at a glance across its whole range.

How to identify it

Fruiting body

A large, roughly spherical to slightly flattened or pear-shaped ball, typically 20-50 cm in diameter and occasionally far larger. The outer skin (the peridium) is white to off-white when fresh, thin, smooth and soft like suede or kid leather, sometimes finely cracking into shallow patches with age. There is no cap, no gills and no true stalk - the ball is attached to the ground only by a short, cord-like mycelial root at its base.

Interior and colour change

When young the interior (gleba) is pure white, firm and uniform, like dense marshmallow, with no trace of internal structure, cavities or an outline of a developing mushroom. As the fungus ripens the gleba passes through yellow and olive-yellow to a dry, cottony olive-brown or purple-brown powder. The outer skin simultaneously discolours to tan or brown, becomes papery, and finally tears open so that wind and rain can disperse the spores. Old specimens persist through winter as ragged brown husks.

Spore print

Olive-brown to yellow-brown. In practice the spore mass itself is the reference rather than a deposited print. Spores are minute, spherical and finely warted, and are produced in astronomical numbers - a single large fruiting body may hold several trillion.

Where and when it grows

The Giant Puffball is a grassland and hedgerow species, favouring nutrient-rich, disturbed and often nitrogen-enriched ground: old pastures, meadows, roadside verges, churchyards, parkland, orchards, garden lawns, and the shelter of hedge bottoms and nettle beds. It also appears at woodland edges and in open clearings, but it is not a deep-forest fungus.

Fruiting runs from mid or late summer into autumn, typically following a period of warm, wet weather. It is widespread across temperate Europe, much of temperate North America, and parts of Asia, and it often recurs in the same spot year after year, sometimes forming loose rings or lines that trace the spread of the underground mycelium.

Ecological role

Calvatia gigantea is a saprotroph. Its mycelium lives in soil and grassland thatch, breaking down dead organic matter - decaying roots, leaf litter and humus - and recycling the nutrients locked up in it. It forms no partnership with tree roots, which is why it thrives in open grass where mycorrhizal fungi are scarce.

The enormous spore output is a strategy suited to open habitat: rather than shooting spores a few millimetres into still forest air, the ripe ball simply disintegrates and lets wind, rain splash and passing animals scatter the powder over long distances. Old ruptured husks continue to puff spores for months. Established mycelial patches can be long-lived, which explains the reliable annual reappearance of fruiting bodies in familiar meadows.

Similar species

Other large puffballs can approach it in size but rarely match it. The Mosaic Puffball (Calvatia utriformis) is smaller, more top-shaped, and its surface breaks into distinct polygonal scales resembling crazy paving, and it leaves a persistent sterile cup after the top has weathered away. Calvatia excipuliformis, the Pestle Puffball, has an obvious elongated sterile stem beneath the fertile head, giving a skittle or pestle outline rather than a plain sphere.

The earthballs (Scleroderma species) are far smaller, with a thick, tough, yellow-brown, coarsely scaly rind, and their interior turns firm purple-black very early rather than passing through a long pure-white stage. Immature egg stages of Amanita species can look ball-like in the ground, but they are much smaller, have a tougher membranous outer layer, and when sliced vertically show the outline of a miniature cap, gills and stalk inside - the Giant Puffball is featureless white throughout.
