A grey willow-associated knight that is unusual in its genus for having a distinct woolly white ring on the stipe. The small fibrillose-scaly cap and faintly yellowing gills complete the picture.

Overview

The Girdled Knight (Tricholoma cingulatum) belongs to the same grey-capped group as the Grey Knight but is set apart by a feature rare in Tricholoma: a well-formed partial veil that leaves a shaggy, cottony white ring or girdle around the upper stipe. The epithet cingulatum means girdled, referring to exactly this structure.

It is a smaller and more slender fungus than most knights, with a dry grey cap broken into fine appressed fibrils and scales, whitish gills that acquire a pale yellow tint with age, and a white stipe that is often floccose-powdery above the ring. It fruits gregariously, sometimes in dozens, in the damp willow-dominated habitats it depends on.

For identification purposes the combination of habitat and ring is close to diagnostic. A grey, scaly-capped knight growing under willow with a woolly stipe girdle can be named with confidence in the field, provided the ring is genuinely a persistent structure rather than the faint fibrillose zone seen in some relatives.

How to identify it

Cap

2.5 to 6 cm across, convex then flattened and often with a small low umbo. The surface is dry and covered in fine grey to grey-brown radial fibrils and small appressed scales over a paler ground, densest at the centre. The margin is thin and may be slightly incurved when young.

Gills

Whitish to pale cream when fresh, slowly taking on a pale yellowish tinge with age or where bruised. They are moderately crowded, fairly broad, and sinuate at the stipe.

Stipe

4 to 8 cm tall and 0.5 to 1 cm thick, cylindrical, white, slightly floccose above and often with a whitish fibrillose covering below. The defining feature is a distinct woolly, cottony white ring near the top of the stipe, formed from the collapsed partial veil; it may become slightly ragged but usually persists. No volva is present.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is white and thin, sometimes with a faint yellowish tone in the cortex of the stipe. Odour is farinaceous. The spore print is white and the spores are smooth and ellipsoid.

Where and when it grows

The Girdled Knight is closely tied to willows (Salix), including creeping willow in coastal dune slacks and larger sallows in damp woodland margins, carr and wet flushes. It also occurs on damp waste ground and old industrial sites wherever pioneer willow scrub has established, and is a characteristic dune-slack species where creeping willow forms low mats among the sand.

Fruiting runs from late summer into autumn, peaking in September and October. It is widespread across northern and central Europe, generally frequent within its rather specific habitat and absent from woodland lacking willows.

Ecological role

This species is ectomycorrhizal with willows. Its mycelium wraps the fine roots of Salix in a fungal sheath and exchanges soil-derived phosphorus and nitrogen for sugars produced by the host. Because creeping willow forms extensive low mats in dune slacks, the fungus can build very large mycelial networks in that habitat, producing dense troops of fruitbodies over a small area of sand.

Dune slacks are seasonally wet, and fruiting typically follows the autumn rise in the water table combined with cooling temperatures. The partial veil that produces the ring protects the developing gills while the young fruitbody pushes up through damp sand and moss.

Similar species

The Grey Knight (Tricholoma terreum) is the closest match in cap appearance but grows under pines, has no ring at all, and its gills stay white without yellowing. Tricholoma scalpturatum also yellows with age and can occur in similar damp places, but it lacks a persistent woolly ring, showing at most a faint fibrillose zone, and it favours broadleaved trees and grassy verges. Tricholoma inocybeoides is smaller with a more sharply conical, silky-fibrillose grey cap and no ring.

Small grey Inocybe species share the fibrillose cap and willow habitat but give a dull brown spore print and often have a distinctly conical, radially split cap. Cortinarius species associated with willow have a cobwebby cortina rather than a firm woolly girdle, and their gills turn rusty brown as the spores mature.

What makes this knight easy to spot?
The persistent shaggy white ring on the stipe. Very few Tricholoma have a true ring, so a grey scaly-capped knight with a woolly girdle under willow is almost certainly this species.
Does it only grow with willow?
Effectively yes. It is ectomycorrhizal with Salix, from creeping willow in dune slacks to sallows in damp woodland edges and wet waste ground.
Do the gills change colour?
They start whitish and slowly develop a pale yellowish tint with age or bruising, a useful supporting character alongside the ring.
What spore print does it give?
White, like all Tricholoma. That separates it from ringed brown-spored genera such as Cortinarius, Inocybe and Pholiota.
