A small scarlet waxcap shaped like a tiny chanterelle, with a scurfy funnel-shaped cap, deeply decurrent yellow gills and a long slender red stem.

Overview

The Goblet Waxcap looks like a miniature chanterelle rendered in scarlet. The small cap becomes distinctly funnel-shaped or goblet-like, its yellow to orange gills run far down the stem in shallow decurrent folds, and the whole thing perches on a long, thin, red-orange stalk that lifts it above the moss it grows in.

It is a genuine Hygrocybe, sharing the genus's thick, waxy, well-spaced gills and white spore print, and it belongs to the same group of small, dry-capped, minutely scurfy red species as H. miniata and H. helobia. Its distinguishing traits are the pronounced funnel shape, the deeply decurrent gills, and a stem that is disproportionately long and slender for the size of the cap.

Also known under the name Hygrocybe lepida in some literature, it is a species of damper ground than most waxcaps, often turning up around bog margins, wet heath and moss-rich flushes where few of its relatives grow.

How to identify it

Cap

Small, 1–4 cm across, convex at first but soon becoming depressed and then funnel-shaped or goblet-like, with a thin margin that is often wavy or lobed and sometimes shallowly striate when wet. The surface is dry and, under a lens, minutely scurfy to finely scaly, especially in the centre. Colour is scarlet to orange-red, fading to orange or yellowish from the margin inwards.

Gills

Thick, waxy and widely spaced, and conspicuously decurrent — running well down the stem, sometimes almost as shallow folds. They are yellow to pale orange, distinctly paler than the cap, and often interveined where they meet the stem.

Stipe

Distinctly long and slender for the size of the cap, 3–8 cm tall but only 2–4 mm thick, cylindrical, often curved or flexuous, smooth, dry and hollow. It is orange-red to scarlet, usually paler or yellowish at the base, with no ring and no volva.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is very thin, orange-yellow, fragile and unchanging when cut. The spore print is white; spores are smooth and ellipsoid, and are somewhat larger than in Hygrocybe miniata, which helps confirm identifications under a microscope.

Where and when it grows

It favours wetter and more acidic ground than most waxcaps: moss-rich flushes, bog and mire margins, wet heathland, damp acid grassland, dune slacks and boggy woodland edges. It frequently fruits directly out of Sphagnum and other bryophyte carpets, and can also appear on rotting mossy wood in damp places, which is unusual within the genus.

The season runs from summer into late autumn, with the main period from July to October, generally as scattered individuals or small groups. It is widespread but rather local across northern and central Europe, and recorded from North America and other temperate regions, with populations tied closely to the survival of undrained, unfertilised wet ground.

Ecological role

Like other waxcaps, Hygrocybe cantharellus forms a persistent mycelium in the soil and moss layer rather than decaying substantial woody material. Its close association with Sphagnum and other mosses fits the current view that grassland and heathland waxcaps are biotrophic, drawing carbon through relationships with bryophytes or vascular plants rather than living purely as saprotrophs.

Its preference for wet, acidic, nutrient-poor ground means it is vulnerable to drainage and enrichment as well as to ploughing. Fruiting follows summer and autumn rain, and small colonies reappear in the same mossy hollows year after year while the hydrology of the site remains intact.

Similar species

Hygrocybe miniata is the closest relative and shares the small scarlet scurfy cap, but its cap stays flat to slightly depressed rather than becoming a funnel, its gills bear only a short decurrent tooth, and its stem is shorter and stouter. Hygrocybe helobia is likewise small and scurfy but has adnate gills and a faint garlic odour. Hygrocybe coccinea is larger, smooth-capped and broadly adnate-gilled.

Small orange Cuphophyllus species share the decurrent gills but are pale buff or white rather than scarlet and have a proportionally stouter stem. True chanterelles (Cantharellus) can suggest the same funnel-and-fold silhouette but are far more robust, have blunt branching false gills rather than true blade-like gills, and grow with trees rather than in moss carpets.
