A large and striking golden-ochre mushroom of nutrient-rich waste ground, coated in a fine granular powder and carrying a big flaring ring on a sheathed, boot-like stem.
Overview
The Golden Bootleg is an unmistakable and rather spectacular mushroom, often appearing in large troops or arcs on rich disturbed ground where nothing else of its size is fruiting. It is the sole widely recognised member of Phaeolepiota, a genus whose placement has long been debated because the fungus combines features of several familiar groups.
Outwardly it looks like a giant Cystoderma, with a granular coating over cap and stem, but it also carries the large flaring ring of a Pholiota or Agaricus. The ochre-brown spore print rules out the white-spored parasol group, while the dry, granular, non-viscid cap separates it from the true Pholiota species that live on wood.
Its common name refers to the way the granular covering sheathes the lower stem like a pulled-up boot, ending abruptly at the wide, upturned ring. In good years a colony can produce dozens of golden caps along a hedge bank or roadside, making it one of the most conspicuous autumn fungi of nutrient-enriched habitats.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is large, 5-25 cm across, at first hemispherical then broadly convex to flat, often with a low central umbo. It is a warm golden-ochre to rusty tawny orange, dry, and entirely covered with a fine granular, mealy or powdery coating that rubs off on the fingers. The margin frequently hangs with fragments of veil tissue.
Gills
Gills are adnate to adnexed, crowded and fairly narrow, pale cream to yellowish when young and maturing to ochre or rusty-ochre as spores develop. They are never truly free, which helps distinguish the species from the parasol group.
Stipe
The stem is stout, 6-20 cm tall and 1-3 cm thick, sometimes swollen towards the base. Below the ring it is sheathed in the same golden granular coating as the cap; above the ring it is smooth and paler. The ring itself is large, membranous, spreading and often upturned like a collar, with a granular upper surface. No volva is present.
Flesh and spore print
Flesh is firm, thick and whitish to pale yellowish, sometimes browning slowly where damaged. The spore print is ochre-brown to rusty ochre.
Where and when it grows
The Golden Bootleg favours nutrient-rich, disturbed, often nitrogen-enriched ground. Typical sites include nettle beds, hedge banks, roadside verges, waste ground, woodland margins, log-landing areas, and clearings near alder, spruce or birch. It grows on soil and buried plant debris rather than on standing wood.
It is a northern temperate species, recorded across Europe, northern Asia and North America, and is particularly associated with cool moist regions and mountain valleys. Fruiting runs from late summer into autumn, and colonies often reappear at the same site for years, producing troops, rings or dense clumps of fruit bodies.
Ecological role
This is a saprotrophic fungus, drawing its nutrition from decaying plant material in rich soil rather than forming partnerships with tree roots. Its strong association with nettle patches, manured ground and disturbed verges reflects a preference for high nitrogen levels and abundant buried litter.
By breaking down accumulated stems, roots and leaf debris in these fertile pockets, it plays a part in recycling concentrated nutrients back into circulation. The large fruit bodies represent a substantial investment, which is why the species tends to fruit heavily only where organic matter is plentiful, and why colonies can lie dormant for a season or two between good years.
Similar species
Cystoderma species share the granular cap and stem coating but are a fraction of the size, rarely exceeding 5 cm, and give a white spore print. Pholiota species such as Pholiota squarrosa also have scaly caps and a ring, but their scales are coarse, upturned and fibrous rather than powdery, and they fruit in tufts directly on wood at the base of trees.
Agaricus species have free gills and a pink-to-chocolate-brown gill sequence with a dark brown spore print, and their caps are smooth or fibrillose rather than granular. Armillaria species have a ring but produce a white spore print and grow in clusters on stumps and roots. Among the smooth-capped fieldcaps, Cyclocybe aegerita and Agrocybe species lack any granular coating entirely.
