A large, richly golden branched coral rising from a short whitish trunk, fruiting from soil in broadleaf woodland. Branch and tip colour is nearly uniform, without pink or salmon tones.

Overview

Golden Coral is a big, showy member of Ramaria, producing dense bushes of egg-yellow to deep golden branches that can be 10-20 cm across. Against dark autumn leaf litter the colour is striking and visible from some distance.

The genus Ramaria sits in the Gomphaceae, part of the Gomphales, an order of branched and vase-shaped fungi whose spores are borne on the outer surfaces of the fruiting body. Within Ramaria, colour, staining reaction, host tree and microscopic spore ornament are the working characters, and R. aurea is defined by its saturated, essentially uniform golden colouring.

The species is widespread in European broadleaf woodland and, like most large soil-dwelling Ramaria, is a partner of trees rather than a decomposer, making it a fixture of long-established woods on good soils.

Fruiting body

A broad, densely branched, cushion- to bush-shaped cluster 8-20 cm across and 8-15 cm tall, arising from a single short, thick, whitish to pale cream trunk that is often partly buried in litter.

Branches and tips

The main limbs divide repeatedly into crowded, cylindrical, slightly flattened branches coloured egg-yellow, golden-yellow or warm ochre-yellow. The colour is fairly even from the base of the branching upward, with tips at most only slightly paler or brighter, never pink or salmon. Tips are blunt and two- to three-pointed. Older clusters fade toward dull ochre-tan.

Flesh and spore print

Flesh is white to pale yellowish, firm but brittle, and shows little or only slow brownish discoloration on cutting compared with some relatives. The spore deposit is pale ochre to yellowish; spores are elongated-elliptical with a finely roughened surface.

Where and when it grows

Golden Coral fruits from soil and leaf litter in mature broadleaf woodland, most commonly under beech and oak, and it prefers deep, moist humus over neutral to calcareous ground. It often appears in the same locality year after year, sometimes forming loose arcs where the mycelium has spread outward.

The season runs from summer into autumn. The species is widely distributed in Europe and reported from temperate Asia; a number of North American golden corals long referred to this name represent related but distinct species, so the identification is most secure in its European range.

Ecological role

Like the other large soil-dwelling members of its genus, Golden Coral is ectomycorrhizal. Its hyphae sheathe the fine feeder roots of the host tree and penetrate between root cells, forming a two-way exchange interface for water, phosphorus and nitrogen moving in and plant sugars moving out.

That dependence on living hosts anchors the fungus to stable woodland and makes it sensitive to soil disturbance and nutrient enrichment. The mycelial network binds soil particles, holds moisture in the upper horizons, and links neighbouring trees, while the fleshy fruiting bodies feed slugs and litter invertebrates as they decay.

Similar species

Ramaria flava is paler and more lemon or sulphur-yellow, with a bulkier white trunk and flesh that reddens and then browns markedly when bruised. Ramaria formosa has salmon to apricot-pink branches capped with yellow tips rather than a uniform golden colour. Ramaria largentii is a similar golden coral of conifer forests, separated by habitat and by microscopic detail.

Ramaria stricta is smaller, tan rather than golden, strictly upright in its branching and attached to wood by white cords. Any small, slender, white-spored yellow coral is more likely Ramariopsis or Clavulinopsis, which are a fraction of the size and unbranched or only sparsely forked.

Nearly uniform. Branches and tips are much the same egg-yellow to golden shade, with the trunk paler to whitish. Any distinctly pink or salmon tone in the branches points instead to Ramaria formosa.
