A vivid orange spring cup fungus of conifer duff whose margins and bruised areas stain a distinctive blue-green. It is one of the earliest fungi to appear at the edge of retreating snow.

Overview

Golden Cup (Caloscypha fulgens) is a small ascomycete cup fungus and the only widely recognised member of its genus. It fruits very early in the season, frequently pushing through wet needle litter within days of snowmelt, which has earned it the nickname "snowbank orange peel fungus" in mountain regions.

The fruit body is a shallow, often irregular or split cup rather than a stalked mushroom, and its colour is the first thing most people notice: a saturated egg-yolk to tangerine orange. What separates it from every other spring cup is the reaction of its outer surface, which discolours to a dull blue-green or olive-green where handled, aged or damaged. Older specimens can look almost two-toned, orange inside and greenish outside.

Within the Caloscyphaceae, this species is unusual in having a life history tied to conifer seed as well as to litter, which is discussed further under ecology.

How to identify it

Fruiting body

Cups 1–4 cm across, at first almost closed and globose, expanding to a shallow saucer or an irregular, wavy, often laterally split cup. There is no true stalk, or at most a very short pinched attachment point buried in litter.

Surfaces

The inner (fertile) surface is smooth, bright orange to golden yellow. The outer surface is a little paler and duller, and develops blue-green to olive-green blotches with age, handling or bruising — the single most useful field character.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is thin, brittle and pale orange, without gelatinous texture. Spores are smooth and globose, giving a whitish print; in mass the spore deposit is inconspicuous because the cups are small and appear low in the litter.

Where and when it grows

Golden Cup grows on damp needle duff, mossy ground and buried debris in coniferous forest, especially under spruce, fir and pine. It is strongly associated with the snowmelt zone in montane and boreal forests and often appears in scattered troops along trails, stream banks and depressions where meltwater lingers.

The season is short and early — late winter to spring, occasionally into early summer at high elevation. It is widespread across northern North America and Europe, with records extending into montane Asia.

Ecological role

This fungus behaves partly as a litter saprophyte, breaking down conifer needles and fine woody debris, and partly as a seed-associated fungus of conifers. It is known to colonise spruce and fir seed in cold, wet soil, and in forestry it is recognised as an agent of cold seed disease that reduces germination in stored or overwintered seed lots.

Fruiting is triggered by the sustained cold, saturated conditions of the snowmelt period, which is why the cups appear in a narrow window and vanish quickly once the litter dries.

Similar species

Aleuria aurantia, the orange peel fungus, has a similar colour but fruits in late summer and autumn on bare disturbed soil, roadsides and paths rather than conifer duff, is thinner and more contorted, and never stains blue-green. Sarcoscypha species are a deeper scarlet red, distinctly stalked, and grow on buried hardwood sticks. Otidea species are ear- or rabbit-ear-shaped with a lengthwise split and are ochre to tan rather than orange.

Among spring cups, the green staining of Caloscypha fulgens is essentially diagnostic; no similarly coloured cup discolours in that way.
