Golden-edge Bonnet Identification Guide

A small dark-capped conifer-litter bonnet whose gills are outlined in vivid orange. A hand lens on the gill edge is all the identification really needs.

The setting and the first look

You are on your knees in a conifer plantation or an old spruce-fir stand in autumn, working over a deep spongy bed of fallen needles. Golden-edge Bonnet is a litter specialist, so the substrate is not wood you can see but the dense brown mat of needles, cone scales and twiglets under the trees. What catches the eye is a scatter of small conical caps on wiry stems, individually or in loose troops, each perhaps a centimetre across, with a warm orange-brown to olive-brown colour that does not stand out strongly from the litter itself. Plenty of people walk past it. What makes it worth stopping for is invisible from above: the gill edges are a startling, saturated orange.

This is a species where the identification is made from below, and where a 10x hand lens is not optional. Everything else about the mushroom is fairly generic small-Mycena; the marginate gills are the character.

Working the cap

Caps are 5 to 20 mm across, conical to bell-shaped when young, expanding to broadly conical or bluntly umbonate but rarely flattening completely. The surface is dry to faintly moist, never slimy, and finely translucent-striate: hold the cap against the sky and you can see the lines of the gills showing through the flesh out toward the rim. Colour is a dark olive-brown, greyish brown or sooty brown at the centre, lightening outward, and very often with an orange or ochre-orange flush toward the margin. Older caps fade toward dull tan-grey and the orange tone becomes stronger in comparison. The margin is thin, sometimes minutely scalloped, and may be slightly incurved when young.

Reading the gills

Turn the mushroom over. The gills are adnate to narrowly adnexed, often with a small decurrent tooth, moderately spaced, narrow, and pale greyish, whitish or faintly buff-olive on the faces. Now look along the free edge of the gills with a lens, ideally in daylight with the specimen tilted so the edges catch the light. They are lined with a distinct, unbroken band of bright orange to orange-brown, as though someone drew along each gill with a fine marker. Under the microscope this colour is contained in club-shaped, spiny-topped cheilocystidia packed along the edge.

Young, very fresh specimens have the most vivid margins. Waterlogged or frosted material can look washed out, so check several fruitbodies rather than one.

Stipe, base and flesh

The stipe is 2 to 6 cm long and only 1 to 2 mm thick, cylindrical, hollow, brittle and slightly cartilaginous. Colour runs from yellowish-orange or orange-brown at the apex to darker orange-brown or brownish below. It is smooth or very finely pruinose above and typically shows sparse fine fibrils lower down. The critical detail is the base: it is clothed in a conspicuous tuft of coarse, stiff, orange-yellow to tawny hairs that bind needles and litter fragments into a small mat. If you pull the mushroom rather than dig it, you leave that tuft behind and lose the character, so lever specimens out with a knife blade under the litter.

Flesh is very thin, pallid to greyish, and does not change colour when cut or bruised. There is no latex, no milk, and no reddening or blueing. Odour is faint and hard to pin down, sometimes described as slightly earthy or faintly radish-like; it is not a strong bleach or iodine smell, which would point elsewhere in the genus.

Taking a spore print

Small bonnets drop few spores, so give them help. Cut the stipe close to the cap, set the cap gills-down on half-white, half-black paper, cover with a cup and leave it four to eight hours in a cool, still place. The deposit will be sparse but is clearly white. A white print rules out a great many small orange-toned woodland mushrooms with rusty, brown or pink deposits. Under a microscope, spores are ellipsoid, smooth, colourless and amyloid, turning blue-grey in Melzer's reagent, which is a normal genus trait.

Substrate and season

Golden-edge Bonnet is a decomposer of conifer needle litter, particularly under spruce, fir, pine and Douglas-fir. It fruits from late summer into late autumn, sometimes persisting after the first light frosts, and it responds strongly to sustained rain. It is widespread in northern temperate and boreal forests across Europe, North America and Asia, and it is often abundant in plantation conifers where the needle mat is deep. Finding it on hardwood logs, in grass, or in a broadleaved wood with no conifers nearby should make you rethink the identification.

Separating the look-alikes on structure

Fire-coloured Bonnet (Mycena strobilinoides). Also a conifer-litter species with orange marginate gills, but the whole mushroom is a brilliant scarlet to flame-orange, cap included, rather than dark olive-brown with an orange rim. Its stipe base also bears orange hairs. Cap colour is the separator, and it is not subtle.

Orange Mycena (Mycena leaiana). Bright orange, sticky-viscid caps with strongly orange gill edges, but it grows in dense clusters directly on hardwood logs and stumps and is considerably larger and more robust. Substrate alone separates it.

Coral Spring Mycena (Mycena acicula). Tiny, with a brilliant orange-red cap and a yellow stipe, but the gills are pale with no orange marginate band, and it grows on rotting twigs and debris rather than conifer needle beds.

Mycena rosella. Similar habitat in conifer litter, similar size and shape, but the whole mushroom is pink to salmon and the gill edges are pink-red, not orange.

Mycena olivaceomarginata. Marginate gills again, but the edge colour is olive-brown to grey-brown, and it grows in grassland and mossy turf rather than conifer duff.

Mycena epipterygia and relatives. Have a slimy, peelable cap cuticle and a slippery yellow stipe, with no coloured gill edge.

A field routine

Confirm conifer litter as the substrate. Note the dark olive-brown cap with translucent striations. Lens the gill edge for the unbroken orange line. Lever out the base and check for the orange bristly hairs. Take a white print from one cap for confirmation. Those four observations, taken together, are more than sufficient without any microscopy at all.
