A small, shrubby orange lichen on twigs, distinguished by bright orange apothecia rimmed with hair-like cilia that give it an eyelashed, eye-like look.
Overview
Golden-Eye Lichen forms small orange tufts on the twigs of shrubs and small trees, rarely more than two or three centimetres tall but unmistakable in colour and structure. Its branches are narrow and strap-like, and the colony is crowded with rounded orange fruiting bodies whose margins carry a fringe of slender projecting hairs — the eyelashes that give the lichen its name.
The genus Teloschistes belongs to the Teloschistaceae, the family responsible for most bright orange and yellow lichens; the colour comes from anthraquinone pigments that flash deep purple-red when touched with potassium hydroxide. Unlike the flat, leafy Xanthoria of the same family, Teloschistes is fruticose, growing outward in three dimensions and attached only at a small base.
It is a species of clean, humid, well-lit air, often coastal or near-coastal, and it has become a well-known indicator of both air quality and climate shifts, disappearing from polluted districts and reappearing where conditions improve.
How to identify it
Growth form
Fruticose: small shrubby tufts 1–3 cm across, attached to bark at a narrow holdfast and standing free of the substrate. Branches are flattened to somewhat rounded, 0.5–2 mm wide, irregularly divided, and fringed with fine pale to orange cilia along their margins.
Colour and surface
Bright orange to golden yellow, paler and more yellow on shaded branches, with a somewhat greyish or yellowish underside in flattened forms. The surface is matte and slightly wrinkled. A drop of potassium hydroxide turns the pigment vivid purple-red.
Apothecia
The defining feature. Discs are 1–5 mm across, deep orange to orange-brown, cup- to saucer-shaped, and set on short stalks. Their thalline rims bear a ring of slender projecting cilia, so each fruiting body looks like a lashed eye. Well-grown colonies may consist of little more than crowded apothecia on short branches.
Comparative notes
The combination of fruticose habit, orange colour and ciliate apothecial margins is not shared by any other common lichen of temperate twigs.
Where and when it grows
Golden-Eye Lichen grows on bark, strongly preferring the small twigs and branches of shrubs and young trees rather than mature trunks. Typical hosts include hawthorn, blackthorn, willow, elder, fruit trees, oak scrub, coastal scrub and ornamental plantings, and it also occurs on fence timber.
It favours well-lit, humid, wind-exposed sites with clean air: coastal scrub, estuarine hedgerows, exposed parkland trees and open orchard edges. The species is widely but patchily distributed in temperate and subtropical regions of both hemispheres, including western and southern Europe, parts of North America (notably California and the eastern seaboard), South America, Africa and Australasia. It is perennial and visible year-round.
Ecological role
The fungal partner supports a green algal photobiont within its branches and depends entirely on atmospheric moisture and nutrients, which explains the species' concentration in humid, oceanic and coastal air. Its orange anthraquinone pigments screen the algal layer from strong light, an adaptation to the exposed, high-light twigs it occupies.
As a twig epiphyte it takes nothing from the host plant, but its life cycle is tied to the short lifespan of small branches, so it relies on frequent recolonisation. Reproduction is mainly by ascospores from the abundant apothecia. Because it is intolerant of sulphur pollution yet responds well to modest nutrient enrichment and warmth, its distribution has shifted markedly in recent decades and it is monitored as an air-quality and climate indicator.
Similar species
Teloschistes flavicans is the closest relative in many regions but is a deeper golden yellow to orange-yellow, forms larger, denser, more bushy and rounded tufts, has finely hairy branches and only rarely produces apothecia; when fertile, its discs lack the prominent lash-like cilia.
Xanthoria parietina and Xanthomendoza species share the orange colour and the purple potassium hydroxide reaction, but they are foliose, lying flat against bark in leafy rosettes with broad lobes, and their apothecia have smooth thalline rims with no cilia. Ramalina species on the same twigs are similarly shrubby but are grey-green to yellow-green, never orange. Usnea is also fruticose but greenish and built around a tough elastic central cord.
