A vivid golden-yellow oyster mushroom that grows in dense bouquets from dead hardwood, its thin funnel-shaped caps fading to pale ochre as they age.
Overview
The Golden Oyster is the brightest member of Pleurotus, a genus of stalk-reduced, wood-inhabiting gilled fungi that grow shelf-like from logs and standing trunks. Its lemon to egg-yolk yellow caps make it one of the most conspicuous wood fungi in any forest where it occurs.
Native to eastern Asia, particularly the Russian Far East, northern China, Korea and Japan, it has in recent decades established wild populations in parts of North America, where it fruits on dead elm, ash and other hardwoods. The colour is strongest in young specimens and fades noticeably with age and sun exposure, so a mature cluster may be pale straw or ochre while fresh caps beside it are still brilliant yellow.
Structurally it follows the oyster pattern: decurrent gills running down a short off-centre stem, thin flesh, and a habit of producing many caps from a single branched base. Its white to pale lilac spore print places it firmly in Pleurotus rather than among the brown-spored Crepidotus look-alikes.
How to identify it
Cap
Caps are 2-6 cm across, thin-fleshed, convex at first, soon flattening and becoming funnel-shaped or petal-like with a wavy, often split margin. The surface is smooth, dry to slightly moist, and bright lemon to golden yellow, fading through pale ochre to almost whitish-tan in age or strong light. Many caps arise together from a common branched base, forming a rosette or bouquet.
Gills
Gills are decurrent, running well down the stem, crowded and narrow, white to cream and sometimes taking on a faint yellowish tint near the cap edge. They are often cross-veined where they converge on the stem.
Stipe
Stems are 2-5 cm long, slender, whitish, eccentric to lateral, and typically fused with several others at a shared base. They are smooth to slightly fibrillose and firmer than the thin cap flesh.
Flesh and spore print
Flesh is thin, white, and soft, unchanging or barely yellowing when cut. The spore print is white to very pale lilac.
Where and when it grows
The Golden Oyster fruits on dead hardwood: standing dead trunks, fallen logs, large branches and stumps. Elm is a favourite host, along with poplar, ash, beech, maple and willow. It typically appears in dense clusters after warm, humid weather rather than in the cool conditions favoured by some of its relatives.
Its native range covers the temperate forests of eastern Asia. Established wild populations now occur in parts of eastern and midwestern North America, where it spreads readily along river corridors and through hardwood stands. Fruiting is concentrated in the warm months of summer, with flushes following heavy rain.
Ecological role
This is a saprotrophic white-rot fungus. It colonises the sapwood and heartwood of dead hardwood, degrading lignin along with cellulose and leaving the residual timber pale, soft and fibrous. As a primary decomposer it can capture freshly dead wood quickly, often being one of the first large fungi to fruit from a newly fallen trunk.
In North America its rapid spread has drawn attention from forest ecologists, since a vigorous introduced decomposer can compete with native wood-rotting fungi for the same substrate. Its fruit bodies are also readily colonised by beetles and fly larvae, making dense clusters a small hub of invertebrate activity within a deadwood community.
Similar species
Other Pleurotus species share the decurrent gills and white spore print but differ in colour: Pleurotus ostreatus is grey to grey-brown, Pleurotus pulmonarius whitish-cream, and Pleurotus djamor pink. None approach the saturated lemon yellow of fresh Golden Oyster caps.
Phyllotopsis nidulans is orange rather than yellow, entirely stemless, densely hairy on the cap surface, and gives a pinkish spore print. Omphalotus species are orange throughout with orange flesh, grow from the base of hardwood stumps and buried roots, and have a longer, more nearly central stem. Crepidotus species growing on the same logs are much smaller, stalkless, and deposit brown spores.
