Golden Scalycap Identification Guide
Slimy golden caps studded with flat rusty scales, clustered high on hardwood wounds in autumn. Confirm it with the rusty-brown spore print and the glutinous, non-erect scaling.
Where you find it and what you see first
The typical encounter happens with your neck craned. You are in a beech, maple or ash wood in autumn, and three or four metres up a living trunk, at a broken branch stub or an old wound, there is a small clump of large golden mushrooms sticking straight out of the bark. They catch the light because after rain the caps are wet-looking and glossy, and the yellow is a strong tawny gold rather than a pale lemon. There may be only two or three fruitbodies, or a tight shelf of eight, but they are always attached to wood and usually at height rather than at the base.
That elevated, wound-associated habit is a real part of the identification. Golden Scalycap colonises injuries on living hardwoods as well as fruiting from dead trunks and large fallen limbs, so a cluster at a knot-hole two metres up on an apparently sound beech is entirely in character.
Reading the cap
Caps run 4 to 15 cm across, hemispherical then convex, finally broadly convex to nearly flat, with the margin inrolled and often hung with pale veil fibrils when young.
Two surface characters matter and they must be read together.
Surface slime. The cap skin is viscid to frankly glutinous in wet weather: run a finger across it and it is slippery, and debris sticks to it. In dry spells it can dry to a merely tacky or even shiny-dry surface, which is a common source of confusion, so factor in the recent weather.
Scales. Scattered across the golden ground colour are darker rusty-brown to tawny scales. Crucially, they lie flat, appressed against the cap, more like patches or smears than like spines. They are concentrated toward the centre and thin out at the margin, and because they sit in slime they wash off in heavy rain. A specimen that has been rained on hard for two days can be almost bald, with only faint rusty ghosting where the scales used to be. Look at younger caps in the same cluster to recover the character.
Ground colour is golden-yellow to orange-tawny, often deeper and more rust-toned over the disc, paler and more lemon toward the rim.
Gills, stipe and base
Gills. Adnate to broadly attached, sometimes with a small decurrent tooth, close to crowded, moderately broad. Their colour is a moving target and is genuinely useful: pale yellow to whitish-yellow in buttons, then dull cinnamon, then a solid rusty-brown as the spores mature. Gill faces often become mottled as the spores ripen unevenly. Edges may look minutely white-flocculose under a lens in young material.
Veil and ring. A cortina-like fibrillose partial veil covers the young gills. It does not form a persistent membranous ring; it breaks and leaves a fibrillose annular zone on the upper stipe, which becomes conspicuous only because falling rusty spores dust and stain it brown. Look for that rust-stained band rather than for a skirt.
Stipe. 5 to 10 cm long, 0.5 to 1.5 cm thick, roughly equal or tapering slightly downward, and frequently curved because it grows out of a vertical surface and turns to lift the cap. Dry, not slimy, which is a helpful internal contrast with the cap. Pale yellow at the apex above the ring zone, and below it clothed in recurved fibrillose scales on a yellow-brown ground, darkening to rusty brown or almost blackish-brown toward the base.
Base. Attached directly to wood, often at a wound or knot, with adjoining stipes fusing into a common base in clustered specimens. There is no volva, no bulb and no rooting extension. Cut through the base and the tissue is yellowish, browning with age.
Flesh. Firm, yellowish to pale ochre, thicker over the disc. Sectioning produces no dramatic colour change; expect slow brownish discolouration only. There is no latex and no blueing. Odour mild to slightly aromatic.
Taking the spore print
Cut a mature cap from the stipe and lay it gills-down on white paper under a cover for four to eight hours. The deposit is rusty-brown to cinnamon-brown, sometimes with a faint clay tone. This is the character that puts the mushroom in the right genus group and rules out a long list of yellow wood mushrooms with white prints.
If the fruitbody is mature you may not even need the print: look at where the caps overlap in the cluster, and at the ring zone and upper stipe, and you will usually see rust-coloured spore dust already deposited on the surfaces beneath.
Under the microscope the spores are smooth, ellipsoid, thick-walled and brown, with a distinct germ pore. Spore size is what separates this species from its closest relatives, so serious determinations in this group are made with a measuring eyepiece.
Substrate and season
Golden Scalycap fruits on broadleaved trees, most often beech, maple, ash, birch, aspen and poplar, on living trunks at wounds, on standing dead trunks, and on large logs. It is much less frequent on conifers. The season is autumn, typically from early September through November in northern temperate regions, sometimes extending after mild spells. It is widespread across Europe, North America and Asia in temperate woodland.
Separating look-alikes on morphology
Shaggy Scalycap (Pholiota squarrosa). The most important comparison. Its cap is dry, never glutinous, and its scales are coarse, erect and recurved, standing up off the surface so the whole cap looks bristly. It forms large dense clusters at the base of trunks and on stumps rather than high on the trunk, its gills often take on an olive-green tinge before turning rust, and its stipe is conspicuously shaggy. Dry versus slimy, and erect versus flat scales, is the cleanest split.
Pholiota limonella and the aurivella complex. Very similar in the field: golden, viscid, appressed-scaly, on hardwood. Caps average smaller and a purer lemon-yellow. Reliable separation is by spore measurement, so field material is often best recorded at the species-complex level.
Flaming Scalycap (Pholiota flammans). Brilliant sulphur-yellow with dense, dry, erect yellow scales on both cap and stipe, and it grows on conifer wood. Colour, dryness and substrate all differ.
Big Laughing Gym (Gymnopilus junonius). Large, tawny-orange, clustered on hardwood, rusty spore print, so genuinely similar in overall impression. It differs in having a dry, fibrillose, unscaled or finely fibrillose cap with no slimy layer, a stouter stipe with a distinct membranous ring, and a habit of forming very large clusters at the base of stumps.
Sheathed Woodtuft (Kuehneromyces mutabilis). Much smaller, with a smooth two-toned hygrophanous cap that dries out from the centre, a scaly stipe below a membranous ring, and a duller cinnamon-brown print.
Honey fungus (Armillaria species). Similar clustering on wood, but with a dry cap bearing fine erect hairs, a white membranous ring, gills that stay whitish to pale flesh, and a white spore print.
Field routine
Confirm hardwood attachment, preferably a wound high on a trunk. Feel the cap for slime. Check whether the scales lie flat or stand up. Note the gill colour progression and look for rust dust on the ring zone. Take a print to confirm rusty-brown. Then, if you want a species rather than a complex, take material home for spore measurements.
