A small, brilliant orange-yellow woodland mushroom whose cap is studded with pointed, granular scales, contrasting with widely spaced white gills on a shaggy yellow stalk.

Overview

The Golden Scruffy Collybia is a tiny but arresting wood-inhabiting mushroom. Rarely more than three centimetres across, it makes up for its size with a saturated orange to golden-yellow cap covered in erect, pyramid-shaped granular tufts that give it a bristling, shaggy texture unlike almost anything else on a rotting stick.

The species has moved between genera repeatedly — it has been placed in Collybia, Xerula and Cyptotrama, and the name Cyptotrama chrysopeplum still circulates for it — which is why the common name preserves the older Collybia connection. Modern placement puts it in the Physalacriaceae, the family that also holds the honey mushrooms and rooting shanks.

It is distinctive precisely because of the contrast between parts: a hot orange, scurfy cap sits above thick, widely spaced, pure white gills, and the stalk is yellow and equally scruffy. Once seen, the combination of small size, bright colour, spiky cap ornamentation and white gills makes it one of the easier small woodland fungi to name in the field.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 0.5–3 cm across, convex to broadly convex or flat with age, and sometimes shallowly depressed at the centre. Its colour is bright orange, orange-yellow or golden, occasionally fading toward yellowish buff at the margin in older specimens. The surface is dry and densely covered with small, erect, pointed to pyramidal granular scales or tufts that can be rubbed away, leaving a smoother paler surface beneath. The margin is often finely fringed with scale remnants.

Gills

Gills are white to cream, thick, waxy-looking, broad and distinctly distant — a striking feature on such a small mushroom, with relatively few full-length gills and short intermediate ones between them. Attachment is adnate to slightly decurrent, and the gill edges are even. The white gills against the orange cap are the single best field character.

Stipe

The stalk is central, 1–4 cm long and only 1–3 mm thick, yellow to pale orange-yellow, often paler toward the apex, and covered over its lower part with the same granular scurf that ornaments the cap. It is dry, more or less equal, sometimes slightly enlarged at the base, and lacks a ring. There is no volva and no rooting extension into the substrate.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is thin, whitish to pale yellow, and does not change colour appreciably when cut or bruised. The spore print is white. Spores are broadly ellipsoid to almost spherical, smooth and thin-walled.

Where and when it grows

This mushroom fruits on dead hardwood: fallen sticks, small branches, bark-covered twigs, and occasionally larger logs and stumps in moist broadleaf forest. It favours well-rotted, damp wood on the shaded forest floor, often partly buried in litter, and typically appears singly or in small scattered groups rather than in tight clusters.

It is widely distributed in warm-temperate and tropical regions, including eastern North America, Central and South America, the Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, Australia and parts of Africa. In North America it is most often reported from the southeastern and Appalachian hardwood forests. Fruiting runs through the humid part of the growing season — broadly summer into early autumn in temperate areas, and after rains in tropical parts of the range.

Ecological role

Cyptotrama asprata is a saprophyte of dead hardwood, part of the community of small fungi that break down fine woody debris on the forest floor. Its mycelium works through twigs and branch wood, contributing to the later stages of decay after larger bracket fungi and primary colonisers have opened the substrate.

Because it specialises in small-diameter wood, it plays a role in the rapid turnover of the litter layer, releasing nutrients from material that would otherwise decay slowly. Fruiting is closely tied to sustained moisture; the mushrooms appear within a few days of soaking rain and are short-lived, drying and shrivelling quickly in dry spells. Spores drop from the widely spaced gills and are carried by air currents and rain splash to fresh fallen twigs nearby.

Similar species

Other small orange woodland mushrooms differ in surface texture and gill spacing. Xeromphalina campanella grows in swarming troops on conifer wood, has a smooth, non-scaly orange-brown cap, crowded yellowish decurrent gills, and a wiry dark stalk with an orange hairy base. Flammulaster and Phaeomarasmius species share a scurfy cap but have brown gills and a brown to rusty spore print, never white.

Pholiota species can be scaly and yellowish but are larger, grow in tight clusters, usually show a ring or ring zone, and drop a brown spore print. Cyptotrama relatives in tropical regions can look similar; separating them relies on the exact form of the cap scales and spore shape. Small Mycena or Marasmius species on the same sticks are told apart at a glance by smooth caps, thin fragile flesh and much finer, more crowded gills. The combination here — pointed granular cap scales, thick distant white gills, scurfy yellow stalk, white print — is not matched by any of these.
