Overview

Golden Spindles is one of the brightest fungi of autumn grassland, producing dense sheaves of luminous yellow clubs that can be spotted from many metres away in short green turf. It belongs to Clavulinopsis, a genus of unbranched or sparingly branched club fungi in the family Clavariaceae, separated from the superficially similar Clavaria chiefly by microscopic characters and from Clavulina by its four-spored basidia and non-branching habit.

What makes C. fusiformis recognisable at species level is the combination of pure saturated yellow colour, spindle-shaped clubs tapering to a slender point, and a habit of fusing at the base so that a whole bundle lifts as a single unit. Many of its relatives are yellow, but few are so intensely coloured or so tightly clustered.

Like the rest of the grassland Clavariaceae, it is part of the waxcap-grassland fungal community and is used in conservation surveys as an indicator of long-undisturbed soils. It has a wide temperate distribution and is familiar to grassland surveyors in both Europe and North America.

How to identify it

Fruiting body

Clubs are 4 to 15 cm tall and 3 to 10 mm thick, cylindrical below and swelling slightly in the middle before tapering to a narrow, often sharply pointed apex — the spindle shape that gives the species its name. They grow in crowded tufts of five to fifty, joined at the very base into a common fleshy mass, and are often longitudinally grooved or slightly flattened.

Surface and colour

The whole club is a strong, even egg-yellow to golden yellow, occasionally with an orange cast in strong sun. The surface is smooth, dry and faintly shining. With age or after frost the pointed tips darken to brown or olive-brown while the lower part keeps its yellow, giving a characteristic scorched-tip look to old colonies.

Stipe

No distinct stipe is developed; the fertile surface runs almost to the ground. The extreme base is sometimes slightly paler yellow but never white and downy, which is a useful contrast with Clavulinopsis corniculata.

Flesh and spore print

Flesh is yellow throughout — cut a club lengthwise and the interior matches the surface rather than being white. It is brittle and becomes hollow in mature specimens. The spore print is white, and the spores are broadly elliptical to nearly round and smooth, with a prominent apiculus.

Where and when it grows

Golden Spindles favours short, mossy, nutrient-poor grassland: old pasture, hill grazing, churchyards, dune grassland, unfertilised lawns and grassy woodland rides. It also turns up on mossy banks and among heather at woodland margins. Soil chemistry matters more than tree cover; it will not persist on ground that has been ploughed or dressed with fertiliser.

Fruiting begins in late summer and runs through autumn into early winter where climates are mild, with the best flushes following prolonged damp weather. It is widespread across temperate Europe, occurs through much of North America, and is reported from temperate Asia and Australasia, though some of those populations may represent closely related species.

Ecological role

Clavulinopsis fusiformis lives in the upper soil and moss layer of grassland, and has conventionally been treated as a saprotroph decomposing fine root material and organic matter. As with other Clavariaceae, isotopic studies hint at a more intimate association with the roots of grasses and other herbaceous plants, which would help explain why the genus is confined to old swards and never colonises disturbed or agriculturally improved land.

The mycelium is perennial and spreads only slowly, so established colonies may fruit in the same square metre for decades. The tall, brightly coloured clubs raise the fertile surface above the moss layer where wind can carry spores away, and the fused base helps the cluster stay upright in exposed grassland. Populations are a useful barometer of soil disturbance history in conservation monitoring.

Similar species

Clavulinopsis helvola (Yellow Club) grows in the same turf and is a similar yellow, but its clubs are shorter, usually solitary or in small loose groups rather than fused bundles, and they are blunt-tipped rather than drawn out to a fine point. Clavulinopsis laeticolor is smaller and more orange-yellow with a slender, often flattened club. Clavulinopsis luteoalba is paler apricot to salmon-orange with a distinctly whitish or pallid tip, the reverse of the browning tips seen in Golden Spindles.

Clavaria flavipes and other pale yellow Clavaria species have white rather than yellow internal flesh, so a lengthwise cut settles the question. Calocera viscosa can look similar in colour from a distance but is branched, gelatinous and rubbery rather than brittle, and it grows from buried conifer wood rather than open turf.

Look for three things together: intense egg-yellow colour, clubs tapering to a fine point, and a tight fused bundle that lifts as one unit. *Clavulinopsis helvola* is blunt-tipped and grows in loose scattered groups, while *C. luteoalba* is paler apricot with a pale tip.
Why do the tips turn brown?

Is the flesh yellow inside?
