The Log Before the Mushroom
Golden Trumpet is a mushroom you almost always meet as a crowd rather than an individual. The setting is coniferous forest, and the target is dead wood at an advanced stage of decay: a mossy spruce or fir stump, a barkless pine log sunk into the forest floor, a heap of sawn ends left after thinning, or the upturned root plate of a windthrown conifer. Where conditions suit it, hundreds of small orange-yellow caps erupt from every crack and moss cushion at once, so the log looks as though it has been sprinkled with glowing confetti. That swarming habit on conifer wood is itself a major identification character and immediately narrows the field.
It is also a cold-tolerant species with a long window, appearing from spring, through summer where rainfall allows, and on into late autumn, sometimes fruiting when little else in the wood is active.
First Impression and Scale
This is a small mushroom. Caps run 0.5 to 2.5 cm across and the stems are little thicker than a bristle, so bring a hand lens. The overall look is of a tiny golden funnel or bell on a dark wiry stalk. Young caps are convex to almost bell-shaped, hence the species name, and as they expand the centre sinks into a distinct navel or shallow funnel while the margin stays level or lifts slightly. That combination of a depressed centre and gills running down the stem gives the little trumpet outline that names it.
Reading the Cap
Colour is honey-yellow to orange-tawny, usually deepest and most rust-toned over the sunken centre and paler toward the rim. The cap is hygrophanous, so it fades markedly as it dries, and a single log can show bright orange caps in a damp hollow and washed-out buff caps on the exposed upper surface at the same moment. Do not let that variation unsettle you.
The surface is smooth, moist and slightly greasy when wet, but never sticky enough to pull at a fingertip. Look at the margin against the light: it is translucent-striate, with the darker lines of the gills visible through the flesh, and in older caps the margin is often finely scalloped, wavy or shallowly grooved. There are no scales, no fibrils and no veil remains hanging from the rim.
The Spore-Bearing Surface
Turn a cap over and put the lens on it, because the gills carry two very useful characters. First, they are clearly decurrent, running some way down the stem rather than stopping at it. Second, they are distant to moderately distant, comparatively thick for such a small mushroom, and joined to one another by low cross-veins between the main plates. That interveining, best seen on a fresh mature cap, is a strong supporting feature.
Gill colour is pale yellow to a warm orange-yellow, usually a shade paler than the cap, with even edges and a number of short gills that do not reach the stem. They do not stain when rubbed.
Stipe, Base and the Tawny Tuft
The stem is 1 to 4 cm long and only 1 to 2 mm thick, often curved or off-centre because the fruit body has bent toward the light. It is tough and wiry, springy rather than brittle, hollow, smooth and slightly shining. Colour is the key: yellowish at the very top, grading downward to reddish-brown, chestnut and finally an almost blackish-brown at the base. That two-tone stem against a golden cap is very distinctive.
Now the character that clinches it. Ease a cluster off the wood rather than snapping the stems and inspect the very bottom under the lens. There should be a conspicuous tuft of coarse, tawny to rust-orange hairs at the base, matting the stems together and binding moss fibres and wood fragments. Almost nothing else in the same size class and habitat carries this bright basal fuzz, and its absence should make you reconsider.
Flesh and Colour Change
The flesh is very thin, yellowish, and pliant. Split a cap and stem lengthwise: there is no colour change on exposure, no latex, and no staining where handled. There is no notable odour. One further quirk worth knowing is that dried fruit bodies revive when rewetted, regaining their shape and colour, so a shrivelled log-full after a dry spell can look fresh again a day after rain.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Small caps give thin prints, so use several. Cut the stems off close beneath the gills, arrange five or six caps gills-down on a sheet that is half white and half black, cover with an upturned cup, and leave overnight. Concentrate the deposit into a ridge with a blade before judging it. The result should be white to very pale buff or cream. A rusty-brown or cinnamon print takes you straight out of this group and into the wood-inhabiting brown-spored fungi.
If you have a microscope and an iodine reagent, the spores turn blue-black, an amyloid reaction that confirms the genus and separates it from several superficially similar orange wood fungi whose spores do not react.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Golden Trumpet is a decomposer, breaking down the cellulose and lignin of well-rotted conifer wood, and it is a specialist of the later stages of decay when the wood is soft, damp and moss-covered. Spruce, fir, pine and hemlock all support it. Because it works soft rotten wood rather than fresh timber, it is a good indicator of a forest with a continuous supply of standing and fallen deadwood. The occasional record on hardwood should always prompt a careful check against its hardwood-loving twin, described below.
Separating It From Look-Alikes on Structure Alone
Xeromphalina kauffmanii is the nearest thing to an identical twin, but it fruits on decaying hardwood such as beech, maple and oak. It tends to be a shade duller and less orange, and its spores are slightly smaller, but in practice the substrate is the working separator. Establish whether the log is a conifer, by needle litter, resin, bark and grain, before settling the name.
Xeromphalina cauticinalis and its relatives grow from conifer needle litter and small debris on the forest floor rather than from solid wood, have longer and more slender stems, and show a browner, less golden cap.
Rickenella fibula shares the small size, orange tones and decurrent gills but grows among mosses in lawns, banks and woodland floors, not in swarms on logs. Its stem is uniformly pale orange without the dark base, and it has no tawny basal hair tuft.
Chrysomphalina chrysophylla also grows on conifer wood with deep golden decurrent gills, but the cap is browner or olive-tinged, the gills are thicker and more waxy, the stem lacks the dark base and basal tuft, and the spores do not react in iodine.
Mycena species of similar size on conifer wood have gills that are adnate or ascending rather than running down the stem, no interveining of that kind, and no basal fuzz.
Galerina marginata grows on conifer wood, but it is browner, has a ring or ring zone on the stem, brown gills at maturity and a rusty-brown spore print, and lacks the orange basal hairs entirely.
