Golden Waxcap Identification Guide

The Turf That Produces It

Golden Waxcap is a grassland species and the ground tells you as much as the mushroom does. Look for short, mossy, species-rich turf on thin soils that has been grazed or mown for decades without fertiliser or ploughing. In practice that means old churchyards and cemeteries, sheep-walked hill pasture, ancient lawns and croquet greens, coastal dune grassland, upland flushes, and the mossy verges of long-established tracks. In such places waxcaps fruit in loose scattered troops after autumn rain, and a good site will offer several species at once, so Golden Waxcap is usually found in company.

At a distance the impression is of small buttons of intense lemon or egg-yellow scattered across green turf, glistening slightly if the ground is damp. The colour is genuinely luminous, which is why waxcaps are so often spotted from a standing height while duller grassland fungi are missed entirely.

First Impression and Build

Pick one and hold it. The build is soft, clean and slightly translucent. Caps are typically 2 to 7 cm across, so this is one of the larger yellow waxcaps rather than a pinhead. Young caps are convex or hemispherical, sometimes with a faint broad umbo, expanding to flat or shallowly depressed with age, and the margin often becomes irregularly wavy or splits radially in older fruit bodies. Nothing about the fruit body is fibrous or tough: the whole thing feels soft, watery and easily damaged.

Reading the Cap

Colour is the first note: pure lemon-yellow to chrome or golden yellow, occasionally leaning slightly orange over the centre in strong sunlight, but without red, olive or greenish tones in typical material. Colour is generally even from centre to rim.

Texture is the second note and it matters. In damp weather the cap is viscid, with a thin greasy film that makes it slippery and picks up grass fragments; as it dries it becomes merely moist, then shiny and smooth. Run a finger over the surface and check for that slipperiness before deciding. The surface is otherwise perfectly smooth, with no scales, fibrils or bloom. Look at the margin against the light in wet conditions and you will usually see faint short striations where the gill lines show through the thin flesh.

The Spore-Bearing Surface

The gills are the family signature. They are thick, comparatively broad, waxy-soft and fairly distant, so that you can see individual plates without a lens. Rub one between finger and thumb: it should smear into a greasy, waxy paste rather than crumble or shred, and this texture is what defines the waxcaps as a group.

Attachment is adnexed to broadly adnate, sometimes with a very short decurrent tooth running a millimetre or two onto the stem apex, but they are never strongly and obviously decurrent. Colour is pale yellow to a slightly deeper yellow than the flesh, usually a shade paler than the cap, with even, sometimes paler edges. They do not stain on handling.

Stipe and Base

The stem is 3 to 8 cm long and 0.4 to 1 cm thick, cylindrical, often laterally compressed with a shallow groove running down one side, and frequently curved at the base where it emerges through moss. It is the same yellow as the cap or a shade paler, sometimes whitish right at the bottom, and it is smooth and bare with no ring, no veil remnants and no woolly covering.

Moisture behaviour on the stem is a useful supporting character. In wet weather the stem surface of Golden Waxcap is slightly viscid or at least distinctly greasy to the touch, not merely damp. The interior is hollow or becomes hollow, with a narrow channel visible when you split it.

Flesh and Colour Change

Split a fruit body from cap edge to stem base. The flesh is pale yellow, thin, soft and watery, and it does not change colour on exposure to air. There is no latex, no blueing, no blackening and no reddening, and no distinctive odour beyond a faint, unremarkable mushroomy smell. The absence of change is worth recording positively, because several other waxcaps blacken, redden or develop other pigment shifts where damaged, and noting a clean, unchanging cut is a real piece of evidence.

Taking and Reading a Spore Print

Waxcaps print quickly because the gills are productive. Cut the stem off flush, set the cap gills-down on a sheet that is half white and half black, cover it with an upturned cup, and leave it for three to five hours. Scrape the deposit into a heap with a blade before assessing it. The print is white, occasionally with the faintest cream cast, and looks obvious on black paper. Any pink, rust, brown or cinnamon deposit takes you out of the waxcaps and into other grassland genera. Under a microscope the spores are smooth, thin-walled and ellipsoid, roughly 7 to 9 by 4 to 5.5 microns.

Season, Soil and Ecology

Fruiting runs from early autumn to the first sustained frosts, and follows soaking rain by one to two weeks. The turf must be short: waxcaps rarely appear in rank, ungrazed grass. Soils are typically nutrient-poor and often shallow, and moss is usually abundant among the sward.

Ecologically, waxcaps are no longer regarded as simple leaf-litter decomposers. Isotope studies indicate they draw carbon in a way consistent with a biotrophic relationship involving mosses and grassland plants, though the precise mechanism remains unresolved. What is certain is that their mycelium is slow to establish and intolerant of fertiliser, ploughing and drainage, which makes a rich waxcap community a reliable sign of long ecological continuity. Examine fruit bodies in place where possible and avoid scuffing the turf.

Separating It From Look-Alikes on Structure Alone

Hygrocybe ceracea is smaller, typically 1 to 3 cm, more orange-yellow, with gills that are distinctly decurrent rather than adnexed, and a stem that stays dry rather than greasy.

Gliophorus glutinipes is small and coated in a thick, obvious glue over both cap and stem, so the stem is genuinely sticky rather than merely greasy, and it pulls at the fingers.

Hygrocybe acutoconica, sometimes listed as H. persistens, has a sharply conical or pointed cap that keeps its peak into maturity, a more orange to apricot cast, a fibrous, longitudinally twisted stem, and a margin that splits readily.

Hygrocybe citrinovirens is a greenish-yellow species with a dry, silky-fibrillose, conical cap, quite unlike the smooth greasy dome here.

Hygrocybe reidii is orange rather than yellow, has a dry cap and a distinct honeyed odour, especially in drying material.

Cuphophyllus pratensis is apricot-buff, thick-fleshed and has strongly decurrent gills, and its overall build is far more solid.

Bolbitius titubans, the yellow fieldcap, catches out many people because it is a bright yellow, viscid, grassland mushroom, but it is extremely fragile, deeply striate, grows in nutrient-rich or dung-influenced grass, and its gills turn cinnamon as the rusty-brown spores mature. A spore print settles that pair in a few hours.

  1. Confirm short, unimproved, mossy grassland.
  2. Check for an even lemon to golden yellow cap, smooth and greasy when moist.
  3. Confirm thick, waxy, fairly distant gills that smear when rubbed.
