A Morning Mushroom on Wood Chips
Goldenhaired Inkcaps are creatures of the early hours. You find them in a mulched garden border, along a chip-covered woodland path or beside a rotting hardwood stump, standing in small scattered groups of three or four rather than in the massive tufts of some relatives. In the first hours after dawn they are neat little egg-shaped or bell-shaped caps on slender white stipes; by mid-afternoon the same fruit bodies may have collapsed into black smears on the mulch. If you want to identify one properly, do it on the spot and photograph the young caps before they open.
The first thing to register is genus. The combination of a fragile pale ochre pleated cap, a thin hollow white stipe, gills that go black and dissolve, and a fruit body that lasts less than a day puts you in the inkcap group at once. The species-level question then becomes: what does the universal veil look like, and where is it growing?
The Cap and Its Golden Veil
Caps are small, 1.5-4 cm across when expanded. They start ovoid, almost like an acorn on a stalk, then become conical or bell-shaped, and finally flatten out and split radially at the margin as autodigestion sets in. The surface is strongly grooved: fine radial furrows run from the margin almost to the disc, following the gills beneath, so an expanded cap looks pleated like a folded paper fan.
Ground colour is pale ochre, tan or clay-buff, warmest and darkest over the centre and greying toward the margin as the cap ages and the gills darken beneath.
The character that names the species is the universal veil. Young caps are covered in fine granular, mealy particles. Over the disc these granules are a distinctly warm rusty-ochre to golden-brown, and they persist there longest; toward the margin they are paler, whitish or buff, and they are washed away by rain or lost as the cap expands. Under a hand lens the coating looks like scattered grains of coloured sand rather than felt, fibres or flakes. Always examine the youngest cap in the group - a mature, weathered specimen may have lost the very feature you need.
The Gills and Their Self-Destruction
Look under a young cap and you find crowded, narrow gills, free or only very narrowly attached to the stipe apex, white at first. As spores mature the colour marches from white through pinkish-grey and sepia to a dense black.
Then the fruit body eats itself. Autodigestion begins at the cap margin and works inward: the gill tissue liquefies into a black ink that drips away, and the cap edge curls back and upward as it goes. Catch a fruit body mid-process and you can see the whole timeline at once - a black dripping fringe, a brown-black middle zone, and pale immature gills near the stipe. That progression is characteristic of the group and rules out anything that simply rots or dries out.
The Stipe
The stipe is 3-8 cm long and only 2-5 mm thick, white, hollow, and so fragile that it snaps when you try to twist a fruit body free. The surface is silky-fibrillose and finely pruinose near the apex; it may carry a scattering of fine white fibrils lower down, and the base is slightly swollen, sometimes seated on a small pad of mycelium binding chips or soil.
Two negatives matter. There is no ring or veil zone anywhere on the stipe, and there is no orange-brown felty mat spreading over the wood around the base. The presence of such a mat points to a different species entirely.
Flesh, Odour and Colour Change
The flesh is very thin, whitish, watery and unremarkable; there is no colour change on cutting, and the odour is faint. In this group the tissue quality tells you little beyond confirming fragility, so do not spend long on it.
Taking and Reading the Spore Print
Timing is everything. Pick a cap that has just started to open but has not yet begun to drip, cut the stipe off flush, and place the cap gills-down on white card under a cover. One to two hours is usually enough - much longer and the whole cap will have deliquesced into a black puddle that still, in fairness, tells you the colour. The print is black.
Under a microscope the spores are dark red-brown, roughly 7-9.5 by 4.5-5.5 micrometres, ellipsoid to slightly lens-shaped in profile, with a distinct central germ pore. The shape of the veil cells is what specialists use to confirm the species, so keeping a dried young cap is worthwhile if you want certainty.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Coprinellus xanthothrix is a saprotroph on decaying hardwood - buried branches and roots, rotting stumps, sawdust, and above all landscape mulch and wood chips. It is at home in gardens, parks, path edges and riparian broadleaf woodland, and it is one of the fungi that has benefited from the modern habit of mulching beds.
Fruiting runs from spring to late autumn, triggered by rain, and is often over within a day or two. Because individual fruit bodies are so short-lived, colonies produce repeatedly through a wet spell, and you may find fresh specimens standing beside the black remains of yesterday's.
Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology Alone
- Coprinellus micaceus (Mica Cap). The commonest confusion. It fruits in dense tufts of dozens, often many hundreds, directly on or beside hardwood stumps; the cap is a warmer honey-tan, and its veil consists of glistening, colourless to whitish mica-like flakes that catch the light and wash off quickly. The rusty-golden granular disc of C. xanthothrix is the practical field difference.
- Coprinellus truncorum. Very close indeed and best separated microscopically, on the shape of the spores and their base.
- Coprinellus domesticus. Similar above ground but grows from a conspicuous orange-brown felty mat (an ozonium) spread over the wood - look for that mat before anything else.
- Coprinellus disseminatus. Tiny, under 1.5 cm, grey-buff, in troops of hundreds carpeting a stump, and its gills darken without really turning to ink.
- Coprinopsis lagopus and relatives. Veil is white and woolly-fibrous rather than granular, the stipe is long and shaggy, and the cap opens into a thin flaring disc.
- Parasola species. Deeply pleated, umbrella-ribbed caps with no veil granules at all, and a smooth stipe.
- Psathyrella species. Fragile and brittle like an inkcap but the gills darken to purple-brown without dissolving, veil fragments hang as small teeth on the cap margin, and the print is purple-brown, not black.
