A small shield mushroom recognised by the contrast between its wrinkled brown cap and its bright chrome-yellow stem. It fruits on decaying hardwood twigs and buried debris.
Overview
Goldleaf Shield (Pluteus romellii) is a small woodland species defined by a single striking contrast: a dull brown, olive-brown or date-brown cap sitting on a stem of vivid chrome or lemon yellow. Almost every other feature is modest, but that colour combination makes it one of the easier small shields to name in the field.
It belongs to the section of Pluteus whose cap cuticle is built from rounded and pear-shaped cells, which gives the surface a matt, slightly velvety appearance and a tendency to wrinkle over the disc as it dries — quite unlike the silky radial fibrils of the Deer Shield group.
The species honours the Swedish mycologist Lars Romell. In older literature it appears under a variety of names, and it sits within a group of small brown-capped, yellow-stemmed shields whose limits are still being refined, but the classic romellii form with a strongly yellow stipe is consistently recognised.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is small, 1.5–4 cm across, convex then flattened and sometimes slightly depressed at the centre. Colour is dark brown, olive-brown, date-brown or greyish-brown, often paler and more ochre towards the margin. The disc is distinctly wrinkled or veined, matt to finely velvety; the margin is thin, sometimes weakly striate when moist, and may become yellowish with age.
Gills
The gills are free from the stipe, moderately crowded, whitish to pale yellow when young and turning a clear salmon-pink as spores mature. Gill edges are even and may be tinged yellow.
Stipe
The stipe is the key feature: 2–5 cm tall, 2–5 mm thick, slender, and coloured bright chrome-yellow to lemon or golden yellow, usually most intense at the base and sometimes paling upwards. It is smooth or faintly fibrillose, hollow with age, with no ring and no volva.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is thin and pale yellowish, unchanging when cut. The spore print is pink to salmon-pink; spores are smooth and broadly ellipsoid to almost round. Pleurocystidia are thin-walled without apical hooks, and the cap cuticle consists of rounded to broadly clavate cells.
Where and when it grows
Goldleaf Shield fruits on small, well-rotted hardwood debris rather than large logs — fallen twigs, branch fragments, buried wood chips, sticks embedded in leaf litter and occasionally on rich woody humus. Beech, oak, hazel, ash and other broadleaved trees are typical hosts, and it favours damp, shaded woodland with a deep litter layer.
The season runs from early summer through autumn. Because the fruit bodies are small and the substrate is often hidden beneath leaves, the species is easily overlooked and appears less common than it is. It occurs widely across temperate Europe and is recorded from parts of Asia and North America, with several related small yellow-stemmed shields present in the same habitats.
Ecological role
Pluteus romellii is saprotrophic, causing a white rot in small-diameter hardwood. Its niche is the fine woody fraction of the litter layer, a resource that is abundant, widely distributed and rapidly recycled, which allows the fungus to occur in almost any mature broadleaved wood without depending on veteran trees.
The mycelium spreads through twigs and buried fragments, and fruiting follows soon after summer or autumn rainfall. Fruit bodies are short-lived, often lasting only a few days before collapsing, so recording the species relies on visiting damp woodland regularly through the season.
Similar species
Lion Shield (Pluteus leoninus) reverses the colour scheme with a golden-yellow cap and a whitish stem, and is generally larger. Pluteus chrysophaeus and its allies have olive to yellow-brown wrinkled caps but pale whitish stems without the strong chrome-yellow flush. Pluteus phlebophorus is larger with a warm reddish-brown, strongly veined cap and a white stipe.
Small brown Entoloma species can look similar in size and cap colour but their gills are attached to the stem, their spores are angular, and they grow from soil rather than woody debris. Small Conocybe and Bolbitius species on litter have rusty to ochre-brown spore prints and much more fragile, quickly deliquescing or collapsing fruit bodies.
