A slim, long-stemmed bolete with a velvety chestnut cap, white pores that age flesh-pink, and an unusual pinkish-brown spore print.
Overview
The Graceful Bolete is aptly named: it is a slender, tall, neatly proportioned fungus with a small dark cap poised on a long tapering stipe, quite unlike the heavy-set boletes that dominate the group. It is a common sight on mossy banks in conifer and mixed woodland across eastern North America.
Originally described in Boletus and long placed in Tylopilus because of its pinkish pores, it now sits in Austroboletus, a mainly tropical and southern-hemisphere genus in the Boletaceae distinguished by ornamented spores and pinkish-brown spore deposits. It is the most familiar temperate northern representative of that genus.
The combination of a dry, velvety, dark reddish-brown cap, white pores that flush pink with age, and a long slim stipe that neither blues nor bears scabers makes it straightforward to recognise once known.
How to identify it
Cap
Convex, sometimes with a low umbo, 3–10 cm across. The surface is dry and finely velvety or minutely tomentose, and in age can become wrinkled, pitted or slightly cracked. Colour is a rich dark cinnamon, chestnut, reddish-brown or purplish-brown, usually darker at the centre and often paler and more tawny at the margin, which may overhang the tubes slightly.
Pores
Small and round, white when young, gradually becoming cream, then pale flesh-pink to pinkish-brown as the spores mature. They are unchanging when bruised or at most stain brownish; there is no blue reaction. The tube layer is whitish then pinkish and is often deeply depressed around the stipe.
Stipe
Long, slender and graceful, 6–15 cm tall and only 0.5–2 cm thick, tapering upwards from a slightly swollen or rooting base. It is coloured like the cap or paler and more tawny, dry, and finely roughened, pruinose or shallowly and finely reticulate towards the apex in some forms. There is no ring, no volva and no dark scabers.
Flesh and spore print
White to pale buff, soft and unchanging on cutting. The spore print is pinkish to reddish-brown, an unusual colour among boletes and a decisive character; microscopically the spores are pitted or wrinkled.
Where and when it grows
Austroboletus gracilis grows on the ground on acid, humus-rich or mossy soils in conifer and mixed woodland, frequently in hemlock, spruce and pine stands and on the edges of sphagnum-fringed hollows. It is often found on and around well-rotted conifer wood, mossy stumps and old logs, and along shaded woodland banks.
The season runs from midsummer through autumn. The species is widespread and often common in eastern North America, from eastern Canada and New England south along the Appalachians, and there are records from eastern Asia; related species are far more numerous in tropical Asia and Australasia.
Ecological role
This is an ectomycorrhizal fungus, forming root sheaths chiefly with hemlock, spruce, pine and associated hardwoods on acid, organic-rich soils. Its frequent appearance on decayed logs and mossy stumps reflects the fact that conifer roots ramify through this rotten wood, so the mycorrhizal mycelium follows them into the decaying substrate rather than decomposing it directly.
The tall, slim fruit body lifts the tube layer clear of moss and litter, which favours spore dispersal in still, humid understorey air. Sporocarps are soft and quickly reduced by slugs and fly larvae, and their remains are rapidly incorporated into the moss and humus layer.
Similar species
The Bitter Bolete (Tylopilus felleus) also has pinkish pores but is much stouter, with a paler tan to buff cap and a conspicuous coarse dark brown network over the upper stipe. Tylopilus rubrobrunneus is far larger, with a broad purple-brown cap and a stout stipe.
Leccinum species from the same woods have whitish then buff pores and, decisively, stipes roughened with prominent dark scabers. Porphyrellus species have dark brown pores and flesh that often changes colour on cutting. Among all of these, checking the spore print for a pinkish-brown rather than olive-brown or white colour is the surest confirmation.
