Where to Look and What You Will See First
Grass-green Russula is a birch specialist above all else. The productive ground is birch on light, sandy or acid soils: heathland birch scrub, birch on old commons and sand pits, birch fringing bogs and moorland, birch in mixed woodland and parkland, and birch lines along tracks. It also occurs with spruce in some regions. It fruits from summer into autumn, appearing within a week or two of soaking rain, usually singly or in scattered groups on mossy or leaf-littered ground rather than in dense troops.
What you notice first is a green cap sitting flat among birch leaves. Green is uncommon enough in the mushroom world to be arresting, and the immediate task is to decide which green species you have, because there are half a dozen candidates and the differences are structural rather than chromatic.
First Impression and Build
The overall look is a classic brittlegill: a flat or shallowly depressed cap on a stout white stem, with no ring, no volva, no veil remains and no hairs or scales anywhere. Caps are usually 4 to 10 cm across, the stem 4 to 8 cm long and 1 to 2 cm thick. Pick it up and it feels firm but fragile in a chalky way, and the stem snaps cleanly rather than tearing into fibres. Establishing that brittle, granular fracture at the outset is worth doing before any colour work, because it places the mushroom in the brittlegill and milkcap camp and rules out a great deal.
Working Through the Cap
Colour is a dull grass-green to yellowish-green, typically paler and yellower toward the margin and darker, more olive or brownish at the centre. Very often the cap develops rusty-brown or ochre spots and blotches, especially over the middle and where rain has splashed grit onto it, and older caps can look distinctly rust-stained. That spotting is characteristic and should not be read as a different species.
Shape moves from convex with an inrolled margin, through flat, to shallowly depressed. The surface is smooth: slightly viscid and shining when wet, matt and dry-looking after a fine spell, but it is not broken into patches or warts. In a long drought a few fine cracks can appear, but the cuticle never crazes into the mosaic of angular tiles seen in some relatives.
Test the cuticle by lifting the edge with a thumbnail. It peels away easily for roughly half to two thirds of the radius, more than in the tougher-skinned green species. The margin stays even for a long while and becomes only shortly striate, with small bumps along the lines, in old fruit bodies.
The Spore-Bearing Surface
Stroke the gills with a fingertip: they should crumble and break rather than flex. They are white to very pale cream when young, moderately crowded, adnexed, and comparatively narrow. Two details are worth recording. First, a good number of them fork near the stem, producing a Y where two plates join, which is easily seen if you look along the gill faces from the stem outward. Second, older gills commonly develop rusty-brown spots and stains along the edges, matching the rust-spotting on the cap. Both together are supportive of the identification.
Stipe, Base and Flesh
The stem is white and cylindrical or narrowing very slightly downward, finely wrinkled lengthwise, with no ring and no coloured wash. With age it greys and commonly picks up rusty-brown stains at the base where it meets the soil. Split it lengthwise: the interior is stuffed with a soft white pith at first and develops irregular chambers and cavities with age.
The flesh is white, brittle and chalk-like in fracture. On cutting it does not change dramatically. Over long exposure it dulls to grey and may brown slowly at damaged points, but there is no immediate reddening, blueing or blackening, and no latex of any kind. The absence of milk is worth confirming explicitly on a young fruit body, since the milkcaps include green-tinged species and a fresh cut is the fastest test.
The odour is faint and unremarkable, sometimes with a slightly fruity note, and should not be relied on.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
A print is essential here, because it is the character that separates the green brittlegills most cleanly. Cut the stem flush, set the cap gills-down on white paper or a white tile, cover it with an upturned bowl to hold humidity, and leave it several hours or overnight. Brittlegills deposit heavily, so aim for a thick layer, then scrape it into a compact ridge with a blade and read the colour of the mass in daylight. A thin dusting always reads paler than the truth.
Grass-green Russula gives a pale cream print, in the region of IIa to IIb on the Romagnesi scale, so clearly not pure white but well short of ochre. Under a microscope the spores are ellipsoid, roughly 6 to 9 by 5 to 7 microns, carrying isolated warts up to about 0.8 microns with only a few connecting lines and no full network, and the ornament stains blue-black in iodine reagents.
Partner Trees, Soils and Season
The species is ectomycorrhizal, trading soil nutrients for plant carbon at the root tips of its partner, and birch is by far its most frequent host. Spruce associations are recorded in northern and montane regions. Soils are typically acid to neutral and free-draining, and it is frequently found in the same ground as other birch specialists. Fruiting runs from midsummer to late autumn. Because host identity is a genuine part of the determination, note the trees within rooting distance before naming a green brittlegill.
Separating It From Look-Alikes on Structure Alone
Russula virescens is the most important comparison. Its cap is dry and matt and breaks up into small angular patches separated by pale cracks, giving a crazed, tiled appearance quite unlike the smooth cuticle here. It is stouter and thicker-fleshed, its cuticle peels only at the margin, and it grows with beech and oak rather than birch.
Russula heterophylla has a smooth greenish to olive or grey-green cap, but it prints white rather than cream, its flesh is thinner, its gills fork strongly and repeatedly near the stem, and it grows with beech and oak. Its gills stain rusty when bruised, which can superficially match the spotting here, so use the print colour and the tree.
Russula cyanoxantha in its green form, sometimes distinguished as var. peltereaui, is separated by a very good field test: its gills are soft, greasy and flexible, and a finger drawn across them slides without shattering the plates. It also prints white and occurs with broadleaved trees.
Russula parazurea is smaller, greyish blue-green rather than grass-green, and its cap carries a fine powdery bloom when fresh. It grows chiefly with oak and shows little of the rust-spotting seen here.
Russula crustosa has a crazed, patchy cuticle like R. virescens but with ochre and tan tones mixed into the green, and thinner flesh.
Amanita phalloides is regularly raised as a green look-alike and is separated by construction rather than colour. Its gills are free of the stem, its stem carries a membranous skirt-like ring, its base sits in a sac-like cup, and its flesh is fibrous and tears rather than snapping like chalk. Always check the very base of any green mushroom by digging it out whole rather than pulling, since the cup is often buried.
