A firm green brittlegill whose dry cap skin breaks into a mosaic of angular patches over paler flesh, above chalk-white brittle gills and a stout ringless stipe.

Overview

Russula virescens is among the most easily recognised members of a notoriously difficult genus. Russula species share brittle, granular flesh that snaps like chalk instead of tearing into fibres, gills that shatter rather than bend, and a stipe with no ring or volva. Within that framework, the cracked green cap of this species is close to unique.

The cap surface is matt and dry, and as the cap expands the outer skin cannot keep pace with the flesh beneath. It fractures into small angular plates or scurfy patches, separated by paler cream-white gaps, producing a quilted or crazy-paving effect that is visible from several paces.

The genus sits in the family Russulaceae alongside Lactarius, from which it is separated by the absence of milk when the gills are cut. Its distinctive flesh structure comes from clusters of round cells called sphaerocysts, which are also the reason a russula cap can be snapped cleanly in half.

How to identify it

Cap

Usually 5-12 cm across, sometimes larger, at first hemispherical and firm, later flattening and finally shallowly depressed at the centre. The colour is verdigris, grey-green, grass green or bluish green, typically strongest at the centre and paler toward the margin. The surface is dry and matt, never greasy or shiny, and breaks up into small angular, wart-like patches over a whitish ground — the single most diagnostic feature. The margin is smooth in youth and only faintly grooved in age, and the cuticle peels only about a third of the way in from the edge.

Gills

White to pale cream, moderately close, brittle, adnexed to nearly free, mostly equal in length with occasional forking near the stipe. Edges stay even and pale, and the gills do not turn grey, blacken or exude any fluid when damaged.

Stipe

White, thick and firm, 3-8 cm long, roughly cylindrical or tapering slightly downward, with a dry, finely wrinkled or chalky surface that may develop rusty-brown stains near the base in age. There is no ring and no volva or sac at the base, which sits directly in the soil.

Flesh & spore print

Flesh is white, firm, thick, brittle and granular, unchanging or at most yellowing faintly at the very base. The spore print is white to pale cream; spores are ovoid with warts joined by fine connecting lines.

Where and when it grows

The Green Cracking Russula grows on soil in broadleaved and mixed woodland, with a clear preference for oak and beech, and is also found under hornbeam, chestnut, birch and lime. It favours reasonably rich, sometimes chalky soils and appears both in closed woodland and along paths, rides and grassy woodland margins.

Fruitbodies are solitary or scattered rather than clustered, and appear from early summer through to early autumn, peaking in warm humid weather. The species is widespread across Europe and temperate Asia, with closely related green-capped russulas replacing it in eastern North America and parts of East Asia.

Ecological role

Russula virescens is ectomycorrhizal, wrapping the fine root tips of its host trees in a fungal mantle and passing water, phosphorus and nitrogen into the tree in return for sugars. Because the relationship is obligate, the fungus is confined to the root zones of living broadleaved trees and cannot be raised on dead wood or compost.

The fruitbodies are short-lived and, being fleshy and brittle, are heavily used by slugs, small mammals and fly larvae, which frequently hollow the stipe. Spores dropped from the gills are dispersed by air movement close to the ground, and the mycelium persists in the soil year-round, fruiting only when soil moisture and temperature align.

Similar species

Russula aeruginea is also green but has a smooth, slightly greasy, uncracked cap, a more slender stature and a cream spore print. Russula cyanoxantha often carries green tones mixed with lilac and purple, but its cap is smooth and greasy when wet and, crucially, its gills are soft and flexible and feel greasy to the touch rather than shattering. Russula heterophylla has a smooth olive-green cap and gills that fork conspicuously near the stipe.

Green-capped Amanita species are separated by structures the brittlegills never have: a membranous ring on the stipe, a sac-like volva or bulb at the base, free gills and fibrous rather than granular flesh, plus a stipe that tears in strings. Any specimen with a ring, a bag at the base or milk seeping from cut gills is not Russula virescens.
