Overview

Greencracked Brittlegill (Russula virescens) is arguably the most instantly recognisable species in a difficult genus. The cap cuticle is unusually thick and dry, and as the cap expands it cannot stretch to keep up, so it splits into a patchwork of small angular scurfy patches separated by paler flesh — a quilted or crazy-paving effect found in no other common green mushroom.

It sits in the section Heterophyllae alongside R. cyanoxantha and the other firm-fleshed brittlegills with white spore prints. Compared with typical Russula species it is notably solid and heavy for its size, holding its shape well and resisting the crumbling that afflicts more fragile relatives.

Colour ranges from a soft verdigris and grey-green to a warmer olive, always dull rather than vivid, and the centre of the cap is usually the most heavily cracked area. In dry weather the patches lift at their edges and the whole cap takes on a distinctly mealy, tiled appearance.

How to identify it

Cap

5–15 cm across, hemispherical then convex, finally flat or slightly depressed, thick-fleshed and firm. The surface is dry and matt, verdigris-green to grey-green or olive, and it breaks up into small angular, slightly raised patches or warts, densest at the centre and grading to a smoother, paler zone near the margin, where the base flesh shows white between the green tiles. The margin remains smooth or is only faintly grooved with age. The cuticle peels barely, and only at the very edge.

Gills

White to pale cream, fairly crowded, brittle, adnexed to almost free, often forking near the stipe. They may develop faint rusty-brown spots with age. Gill edges are even and gill faces have a slightly waxy look when fresh.

Stipe

4–9 cm tall, 1.5–3.5 cm thick, stout, cylindrical to slightly club-shaped, plain white, dry, and often finely rugose or with a faint mealy bloom at the apex. It browns slightly at the base with age and shows no ring and no volva. Firm and solid at first, becoming softly stuffed, and snapping cleanly.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is white, thick and firm, unchanging when cut apart from a slight brownish tinge at the extreme stipe base in old specimens. The odour is faint and slightly nutty. The spore print is white to very pale cream; spores are broadly ellipsoid with small warts joined by fine connectives into a partial network.

Where and when it grows

Greencracked Brittlegill grows on the ground in warm broadleaved woodland, most often with beech, oak and sweet chestnut, and also under hornbeam, lime and hazel. It prefers well-drained soils and is common on both calcareous and mildly acid ground, frequently appearing along sunlit woodland edges, on banks and beside paths rather than in deep shade.

It is widespread across Europe, temperate Asia and eastern North America, though it becomes noticeably scarcer toward the cool north of its range and is largely a species of warmer summers. Fruiting is early by brittlegill standards — from mid-summer into early autumn — and a warm, wet July often produces the best flush of the year.

Ecological role

The species is ectomycorrhizal with broadleaved trees, particularly the Fagaceae — beech, oak and chestnut. Its hyphae form a dense sheath around the fine root tips and penetrate between the outer root cells, giving the tree access to water and to phosphorus and nitrogen from a far greater soil volume than the roots could reach alone, in exchange for sugars.

Because it is thick-fleshed and slow to decay, a fruiting body can shed spores over a week or more, and the cracked cuticle may help by presenting a rough, dry surface that sheds rain. Old fruiting bodies are worked over by fly larvae and beetles and are frequently grazed by slugs and small mammals, which also disperse spores. The mycelium persists year-round in the soil, tied to a living host, so the species is confined to established woodland and mature parkland trees.

Similar species

Russula aeruginea is also green but has a smooth, unbroken, slightly greasy cap, is more slender and fragile, and grows chiefly with birch. Russula cyanoxantha in its green form (var. peltereaui) has a smooth or only faintly wrinkled cap and, crucially, soft flexible gills that bend rather than shatter under a finger — the standard test for that species. Russula parazurea is grey-green with a fine powdery bloom over an unbroken cap surface and a cream spore print.

Amanita phalloides is sometimes greenish and shares broadleaf woodland, but its structure is completely different: it has free white gills that are pliant rather than brittle, a fibrous stipe with a skirt-like ring, and a membranous sac-like volva around a swollen base. No Russula has any of these. The cracked, tiled cap plus the crumbly, ringless, volva-less build makes R. virescens straightforward.
