Grey Knight Identification Guide

A step-by-step field routine for Tricholoma terreum: dry felty grey-fibrillose cap, notched pale grey gills, ringless white stipe and white spore print, plus morphological separation from the other grey knights.

The Setting and the First Impression

Grey Knight is a mushroom of pine. Picture yourself in a thin plantation on chalk or sand in late October, standing on a springy carpet of needles with the low sun coming sideways through the trunks. What catches the eye is not a colour but a texture: a scatter of medium-sized, dry, mouse-grey caps, arranged in loose troops, arcs or short lines, each looking slightly dusty or felted rather than glossy. They sit close to the litter, often with needles stuck to the cap, and the group tends to include every stage from small buttons to broad, split-margined old caps.

The overall build is that of a classic Tricholoma: fleshy, dry-surfaced, no ring, no volva, gills notched at the stipe, stocky rather than slender. Register that build first, because it narrows the field faster than any single character.

Reading the Cap

Measure and handle the cap before anything else. Expect 3 to 8 cm across. The shape starts conical to bell-shaped, opens to convex and finally almost flat, and usually keeps a low, broad umbo at the centre. The margin is faintly inrolled in young specimens, straightens with age, and very often splits radially in older material, especially in dry weather.

The surface is the diagnostic feature. It is completely dry, never viscid, never greasy, and it is covered with fine radial fibrils of grey to grey-brown that break up into small appressed scales, densest and darkest towards the centre and thinning towards the margin. Under a lens the cap looks like brushed felt rather than painted plastic. If your finger comes away sticky, or if the cap looks radially streaked and shiny after rain, you are looking at a different species.

Colour ranges from ash-grey through mouse-grey to grey-brown, and the pale ground colour often shows between the darker fibrils.

Gills, Stipe and Base

Slice the mushroom vertically through the centre with a knife. Two things should be visible in section. First, the gills are sinuate, that is notched with a small upcurved hook where they meet the stipe. This emarginate attachment is the Tricholoma signature and it is far easier to see in section than by peering underneath. Second, there is no line of veil tissue and no ring.

The gills themselves are whitish to pale grey, fairly broad, moderately spaced rather than crowded, with even, entire edges. Age them carefully: in Grey Knight they grey slightly and may develop dull grey spotting, but they do not develop yellow spots or a yellow flush, which is a decisive separator from several relatives.

The stipe is 3 to 7 cm long and 8 to 15 mm thick, cylindrical or slightly tapering, white to greyish white, dry and silky-fibrillose, hollowing with age and snapping rather brittlely. There is no ring, though a few fine woolly veil traces may cling near the apex in fresh young material. The base is not bulbous and is not sheathed; scrape the litter away and you should find plain white mycelial threads binding needles to it.

Flesh, Odour and Colour Change

The flesh is white, greyish immediately under the cap cuticle, soft and rather fragile in the cap and more fibrous in the stipe. Leave the cut face exposed for ten minutes and watch it. In Grey Knight nothing much happens: no yellowing, no reddening, no blackening. That stability is itself a character, because several confusable species discolour distinctly.

Smell a fresh cut. The odour is faint and hard to name, sometimes very slightly earthy or of damp litter. It is not strongly mealy and it is not peppery or spicy. Odour alone will not clinch the identification, but a strong smell of fresh meal or of pepper should send you to the look-alike list.

Taking a Spore Print

Choose a fully opened cap, cut the stipe flush with the gills, and set the cap gill-side down on a sheet that is half white and half black so you can judge a pale deposit against both. Cover with a cup and leave four to six hours in a cool place, or overnight if the cap is dry.

The deposit is white. Under the microscope the spores are smooth, ellipsoid, roughly 5.5 to 7 by 3.5 to 5 micrometres, and inamyloid, showing no blue-grey reaction in Melzer reagent. A pink deposit sends you straight to Entoloma; a brown or rusty deposit rules out Tricholoma completely; roughened, warted, amyloid spores indicate Melanoleuca instead.

Substrate and Season

Grey Knight is ectomycorrhizal, and in practice that means pine. Search Scots pine, Corsican pine and other two-needle pines on calcareous or sandy ground: dune plantations, chalk downland shelterbelts, roadside pine rows, churchyard pines and mature pine on light soils. Spruce records exist but pine is the reliable search image. It fruits from early autumn into early winter, later than many woodland agarics, and it recurs in the same spots year after year because the mycelium is tied to living tree roots. Look on open needle litter and along thin mossy edges rather than in deep humus.

Separating the Look-Alikes on Morphology

Tricholoma scalpturatum and Tricholoma argyraceum. Very similar grey scaly caps, but both develop clear yellow spotting on the gills, cap margin and flesh as they age or dry, and both smell strongly of fresh meal. They also favour broadleaves, parkland and grassy places rather than pure pine litter.

Tricholoma atrosquamosum. Darker, with distinctly blackish, pointed, raised scales on a paler ground, dark punctate fibrils on the stipe, and a marked peppery odour.

Tricholoma portentosum. Cap greasy to viscid when moist, radially streaked, and washed with olive, lilac or violaceous tones rather than felted grey; the gills and stipe apex take on a yellow tinge. Crucially, the cap is smooth and streaky, not fibrillose-scaly.

Tricholoma virgatum. Cap sharply conical with a pointed, nipple-like umbo, silvery grey with fine dark radial fibrils, and a more slender build; usually under conifers on acid ground.

Melanoleuca species. Similar greyish caps but a long, straight, rigid, longitudinally fibrous stipe, crowded gills that are only narrowly adnexed, and warted amyloid spores. The microscope settles it instantly.

Lyophyllum decastes group. Grow in dense fused clumps with tough, curved, joined stipe bases; caps are smooth and greasy grey-brown, not felted, and gills are crowded and whitish.

Grey Entoloma species. Superficially similar in the field but drop a pink spore deposit and have angular spores. Always take the print before finalising a grey woodland agaric.
