Grey Spotted Amanita Identification Guide
A field walkthrough for Amanita excelsa var. spissa, from the grey mealy veil patches and grooved ring down to the rooting bulb you have to dig out. Includes the structural points that separate it from the Panther Cap and the Blusher.
What You Notice First
The Grey Spotted Amanita reads, at ten paces, as a big sober grey-brown mushroom wearing a white skirt. Nothing about it is bright. You are usually standing in mixed woodland, beech or oak or birch mingled with spruce and pine, on ground that drains well, and the fungus is pushing up through leaf litter or thin moss either singly or in loose scatterings of two or three. Its bearing is heavy: a broad cap, a thick pale stem, and a base that swells into the soil rather than sitting on top of it. The overall impression is of grey dust sprinkled across a brown cap, which is precisely what those veil remnants are.
Reading the Cap
Start with size and shape. Caps run roughly 6 to 12 cm across, occasionally to 15 cm, hemispherical at first and flattening out with a low broad hump or none at all. The ground colour is grey-brown, mouse-brown or dull umber, usually darker over the centre and paler toward the rim, and the surface becomes slightly greasy to the touch in wet weather, drying matt and faintly silky.
The scattered patches on that surface are the giveaway. They are broken remains of the universal veil, and in this species they are grey to dirty grey-white, soft, irregular and mealy rather than sharply conical or pyramidal. Rain washes them off easily, so a clean cap does not rule the species out; look instead for a few survivors near the margin. Now examine the very edge of the cap with a lens, holding it against the light. On a well expanded specimen the margin is smooth and even, with no radial grooves. That absence of striation is one of the most useful single characters here, and it must be checked on a mature cap, because young caps of almost anything look smooth while the rim is still rolled under.
The Gills
Turn the cap over. The gills are white to very pale cream, crowded, moderately deep and free, stopping just short of the stem and leaving a narrow gutter around it. Under a lens the gill edges are minutely woolly rather than clean and sharp. Short gills are interleaved between the full-length ones and end abruptly, as if cut off square, part way toward the margin. The gills do not discolour beyond a faint cream with age, and they never develop pink or brown tones.
The Stipe and the Ring
The stem stands 8 to 15 cm tall and 1.5 to 3 cm thick, tapering gently upward, firm and stuffed when young. Above the ring it is whitish and smooth or slightly floury. Below the ring it is whitish overlaid with fine greyish fibrils that arrange themselves into faint bands or a delicate zigzag pattern, a scurfy grey stocking with far less contrast than in some relatives.
The ring sits high on the stem, is broad and membranous, and hangs down like a limp collar. Look at its upper surface. It is grooved with fine radial lines left by the gills that once pressed against it. That striate upper ring surface is genuinely diagnostic and takes two seconds to check.
Excavating the Base
Never try to name an Amanita from a snapped stem. Push a knife or your fingers well down into the soil and lift the entire base out, then brush it clean. Here the base forms a stout, roughly turnip-shaped or club-shaped bulb that tapers downward into a short rooting point. The universal veil clings to it as concentric bands of soft grey-white scales or shallow ridges, girdles that circle the bulb. What you will not find is a free, bag-like sac, and you will not find a sharp gutter-like rim running around the top of the bulb. The shoulder of the bulb is rounded and merges smoothly into the stem.
Flesh and Odour
Slice the mushroom vertically from cap centre to base. The flesh is white throughout, firm in the cap and more fibrous in the stem, and it stays white. There is no reddening, no yellowing, no bruising reaction even after several minutes of exposure. Older stems are often riddled by larvae, and those tunnels also stay white or dull grey. The smell is faintly of raw potato or radish, strongest at the base of a fresh specimen, and it is a background note rather than an assertive one.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the cap free of the stem, lay it gills-down on a sheet that is half white and half black, cover it with a bowl to hold the humidity, and leave it two to six hours. The print is white. Against the black half you will see it at all; against the white half you can confirm it is not cream, ochre or pink. Under a microscope the spores are broadly ellipsoid and smooth, and they stain blue-grey in Melzer's iodine reagent. That amyloid reaction is worth knowing, because the ringless grey Amanitas do not share it.
Substrate, Partners and Season
This is an ectomycorrhizal fungus. It grows from soil in partnership with tree roots and is never found fruiting on wood. It partners broadly, with conifers such as spruce and pine and with broadleaves such as beech, oak and birch, and it favours well drained, mildly acid to neutral soils. Fruiting runs from early summer to late autumn, with the heaviest flush from August to October in temperate Europe, where it is common; it also appears under planted trees well outside that range. Path edges, mossy banks and open slopes under mixed canopy are typical spots.
Telling It from Its Nearest Relatives
The Panther Cap, Amanita pantherina, is the critical comparison, and three structural features separate them. Its veil patches are pure white and stand out sharply against a warmer chestnut or hazel-brown cap. Its cap margin is distinctly grooved for several millimetres on mature specimens. And its bulb carries a crisp free rim, a narrow collar standing away from the bulb like the lip of a gutter, often with one or two further ring-like bands just above it. Its ring is set lower, is narrower, and its upper surface is smooth rather than grooved.
Amanita rubescens shares the size and the woodland setting, but its veil patches are pinkish or greyish buff and its flesh slowly turns wine-pink to brick where cut, bruised or tunnelled. Waiting ten minutes on a cut stem base settles that one.
Amanita porphyria is smaller and slimmer, washed with purplish or lilac-grey, has a thin grey-tinged ring that often collapses, and decisively has a bulb with a sharp marginate rim. The grisettes can look grey from above but have no ring at all, a strongly grooved cap margin, and a loose membranous bag at the base.
