A tough, greyish-white bracket clothed in coarse, upright bristly hairs and faintly zoned, with a fine white pore surface beneath.
Overview
The Hairy Bracket is one of the commonest members of Trametes, the genus that also contains Turkey Tail and Lumpy Bracket. All share a thin to moderately thick, tough but flexible fruit body with a white, homogeneous context and a pale pore surface, and all are white-rot decomposers of dead wood. What sets this species apart is the texture of its upper surface, which carries a dense pelt of stiff, erect hairs long enough to feel distinctly rough under the fingertips.
It is a plain-coloured fungus by Trametes standards. Where Turkey Tail flaunts blue, black, rust and cream banding, the Hairy Bracket keeps to whites, greys and dull ochres, with the zones expressed more as differences in hairiness than in pigment. The paler bristles catch the light, giving fresh specimens a slightly frosted look.
Because the fruit bodies are tough and weather-resistant, they persist on a log for a full year or more, gradually greying, flattening their hairs and acquiring an algal film.
How to identify it
Cap
Brackets are 3-10 cm across and up to about 1 cm thick, semicircular to kidney-shaped or fan-shaped, broadly attached, and frequently fused laterally into long rows or overlapping tiers. The upper surface is densely and coarsely hairy — the hairs are stiff, erect and clearly visible without magnification — and is whitish to pale grey, ageing dull grey, buff or greenish with algae. Faint concentric zoning is usually present but is subtle, marked by shallow furrows rather than strong colour changes. The growing margin is often ochre-yellow to tan in fresh specimens and is thin and sharp.
Pores
The pore surface is white to cream when fresh, ageing greyish, straw-coloured or faintly brownish. Pores are round to slightly angular, small and regular, at roughly 3-4 per millimetre, and the tube layer is thin, 1-4 mm deep. The pore surface may darken slightly where rubbed.
Flesh & spore print
The context is white, tough and leathery, 1-5 mm thick, with a thin dark line separating the context from the hairy upper layer in cross-section — a useful confirmation under a hand lens. There is no stipe. The spore print is white, and the spores are cylindrical and smooth.
Where and when it grows
The Hairy Bracket fruits on dead hardwood of many kinds: fallen branches, standing dead stems, stumps, cut ends of logs and worked timber left outdoors. Birch, beech, willow, hazel, maple, alder and fruit trees are all frequent hosts, and it will occasionally take conifer wood. It shows a preference for well-lit situations — hedgerow edges, wind-thrown branches and log piles — rather than deep shade.
It is widespread throughout the temperate northern hemisphere, common across Europe, Asia and North America. New fruit bodies appear mainly from summer into late autumn, but old brackets persist year-round in a faded, hardened state.
Ecological role
This is a saprotrophic white-rot fungus. Its enzymes degrade lignin together with cellulose, converting firm hardwood into a pale, soft, fibrous mass that eventually crumbles into the litter layer. It is typically an early coloniser of freshly dead branches, arriving through spores that land on exposed wood after bark damage or breakage.
Once established it can hold a branch for several years, competing with other Trametes species and with Stereum crusts along visible dark demarcation lines in the wood. The decayed wood it leaves behind is soft enough for invertebrates and cavity-excavating birds to work, and the persistent brackets themselves shelter beetles, springtails and fungus gnats through the winter.
Similar species
Trametes versicolor, the Turkey Tail, is thinner, more flexible, and finely velvety rather than coarsely bristly, and shows strongly contrasting concentric bands that often include blue-grey, black or rusty tones. Trametes pubescens is whitish overall like the Hairy Bracket but is only finely downy to nearly smooth, lacks clear zoning, and has a thicker, softer context with a cream pore surface that browns when handled.
Trametes ochracea is thicker and cushion-shaped at the base with warm ochre and tan zones and a merely velvety surface. Trametes gibbosa has a distinct lumpy hump at the attachment and elongated, slot-like pores rather than the small round pores here. Stereum species can look comparably hairy from above but have a smooth, poreless underside.
