A grey foliose lichen whose lobes are embossed with a network of white ridges and shallow pits, looking like hammered metal, with soredia along the ridge lines.
Overview
Hammered Shield Lichen (Parmelia sulcata) is among the most abundant and widely distributed foliose lichens in the world, forming grey rosettes on bark, fences, walls and rock in temperate regions across both hemispheres. Thalli are typically 4-15 cm across and often coalesce into extensive grey crusts covering whole branches.
The common name captures its texture perfectly. The upper surface carries a distinctive reticulate pattern of raised white ridges enclosing shallow depressions, an effect that recalls hammered or beaten metal and that is visible with the naked eye on a dry thallus.
Those white ridges are not merely decorative: they are lines of ruptured cortex (pseudocyphellae) that develop into the soredia by which the species reproduces. That combination — grey colour, white reticulate ridging, and powdery soredia forming along the ridges — makes P. sulcata one of the easiest large foliose lichens to name in the field.
How to identify it
Thallus and lobes
The thallus is foliose and fairly closely appressed, forming rosettes 4-15 cm across with somewhat elongated, angular to subrectangular lobes 2-6 mm wide. Lobe tips are squared off or shallowly notched rather than neatly rounded.
Upper surface
The upper side is grey, blue-grey or grey-green, dulling to brownish grey in exposed sites. It is patterned throughout with a fine network of raised white lines and ridges separating shallow pits — the hammered effect. Along and on top of these ridges, especially toward the centre of the thallus, the cortex breaks open to release masses of granular grey-white soredia.
Lower surface
The underside is black across the centre, sometimes fading to dark brown near the margin, and is densely covered with black, simple or slightly branched rhizines that reach almost to the lobe tips.
Fruiting bodies
Apothecia are infrequent: brown concave discs with a grey thalline rim, on the upper surface. Nearly all field material reproduces by soredia instead.
Where and when it grows
Hammered Shield Lichen colonises a huge range of substrates: the bark of deciduous and coniferous trees, twigs and branches, wooden fences, gate posts, rails, walls, roof tiles, gravestones and siliceous or slightly nutrient-enriched rock. It is happiest in well-lit, open situations such as hedgerow trees, roadside trees, parkland, orchards, moorland fences and coastal scrub, and tolerates a degree of nutrient enrichment from dust and agriculture.
It has an essentially cosmopolitan temperate distribution, occurring across Europe, Asia, North America, parts of Africa, Australasia and South America, and is often the commonest large grey lichen on isolated trees in farmland. Perennial and evergreen, it can be recorded in any month and shows its ridge pattern most clearly when dry.
Ecological role
Parmelia sulcata is an epiphyte and epilith rather than a parasite or decomposer: the fungus builds and anchors the thallus with black rhizines while the green algal partner photosynthesises, and all water and mineral nutrition arrives from rain, dew, dust and surface runoff. It takes nothing from the wood or bark it sits on and is equally at home on inert stone.
Its remarkable success stems from prolific soredial reproduction and a broad tolerance of substrate chemistry, light and moderate nutrient enrichment. Soredia detach from the ridge lines and travel on wind, rain splash and the feet and feathers of birds, founding new thalli quickly on freshly exposed bark or timber, which is why P. sulcata is usually among the first large foliose lichens to appear on a young tree or a new fence.
Similar species
Parmelia saxatilis is the closest match, sharing the grey colour and the white reticulate ridge network, but it reproduces by isidia — small solid, cylindrical to coral-like outgrowths that feel granular but do not smear — rather than the powdery soredia of P. sulcata. Rubbing a lobe gently distinguishes them: soredia dust away, isidia break off as tiny solid grains.
Punctelia species are grey but marked with scattered round white dots (pseudocyphellae) instead of a connected ridge network, and often have brown rather than black undersides. Flavoparmelia caperata is separated at once by its yellow-green colour and unridged, wrinkled centre. Hypogymnia physodes is grey and lobed but has hollow inflated lobes and no rhizines at all beneath.
