Hare's Ear

A tan to fox-brown ear-shaped cup, split down one side and taller than wide, growing from needle litter and moss in coniferous woodland.
Overview
Hare's Ear is the archetypal Otidea: an asymmetric, ear-shaped ascomycete fruiting body split down one side, standing upright from the forest floor with one edge distinctly higher than the other. The species name leporina refers to the hare, and a small group of these fungi leaning together does look convincingly like a set of ears pushed up through the litter.
It is plainer than its yellow relative the Lemon Peel Fungus, being a fairly uniform tan, ochre-brown or fox-brown on both surfaces with no pink or apricot tones. The texture is firm and slightly pliant, and the outer surface has a fine mealy bloom rather than hairs.
The genus sits in the Pyronemataceae, and Hare's Ear is among its most widespread members, familiar in conifer forests across the northern temperate zone from late summer into autumn.
How to identify it
Fruiting body
Ear-shaped and asymmetric, 2–7 cm tall and 1–4 cm wide, split from the margin to the base along one side so that the structure curls inward, with one side clearly elongated. Several fruiting bodies commonly arise together in a tuft.
Surfaces
Both surfaces are similar in colour: tan, ochre-brown, warm yellow-brown or fox-brown, with the inner surface sometimes marginally darker or duller than the outer. The outer surface is finely mealy or scurfy; the inner surface is smooth. There is no pinkish or salmon flush.
Stipe
The base tapers to a short, pale, stalk-like attachment, usually whitish and covered with fine white mycelial threads binding needles and moss.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is thin, pale brownish, firm and slightly rubbery-pliant, breaking with a soft tear rather than a crisp snap. There is no latex or colour change when cut. The spore print is white; spores are smooth and elliptical, typically with two oil droplets.
Where and when it grows
Hare's Ear grows on the ground in coniferous woodland, particularly under spruce and fir, emerging from needle litter, moss carpets and humus. It also occurs in mixed woods, and less commonly under broadleaved trees. It tends to favour older, shaded, mossy stands with a deep organic layer.
The season runs from late summer through autumn, sometimes into early winter in mild oceanic climates. It is widespread across the temperate and boreal forests of Europe and North America and is one of the more frequently recorded Otidea species.
Ecological role
Like others in its genus it lives in the litter and humus layer of the forest floor, functioning primarily as a decomposer of needle litter and fine organic matter, with the genus's precise nutritional relationship to tree roots still debated. Its mycelium is often visible as fine white strands binding needles around the base of the fruiting bodies.
The vertical, one-sided form places the hymenium — the spore-producing layer on the inner face — at right angles to the ground. Asci discharge spores horizontally into the air moving through the litter layer, an arrangement well suited to a fungus that fruits among loose needles that would otherwise smother an upward-facing cup.
Similar species
The Lemon Peel Fungus (Otidea onotica) is the same shape but clearly yellower, with a distinctive apricot to pinkish flush on the inner surface, and it favours beech and oak rather than conifers. Tan Ear (Otidea alutacea) is duller and greyer, opens into a broader, shallower, more cup-like form, and is less markedly ear-shaped. Toad's Ear (Otidea bufonia) is far darker — dark brown to almost blackish — and thicker-fleshed.
Brown Peziza species can be mistaken for a torn ear, but they are brittle rather than pliant, form symmetrical cups that split only by irregular expansion, and typically sit flat rather than standing upright. Wynnea species are much larger, deep reddish brown, and rise in clusters from a shared tuberous base.
