A pale clay-coloured woodland mushroom with crowded brown-maturing gills whose edges bead with droplets in humid weather, and a strong radish-like odour.
Overview
Hebeloma crustuliniforme is the archetype of a large genus of pale, smooth-capped, brown-spored mycorrhizal agarics that fruit in troops on woodland floors and path edges in autumn. The specific epithet refers to the pastry-crust colour of the cap, a warm cream to clay-buff shade that stays remarkably uniform across a whole troop.
The species is best known for a curious feature of its gills: in humid conditions the gill edges exude small clear droplets of liquid, which as they dry leave rusty-brown spots along the edge. This beading, visible with a hand lens on fresh material, is a genus-level character shown especially well by this species and is one of the most useful signposts to Hebeloma in the field.
The genus as a whole is taxonomically demanding, with many closely similar species separated by spore ornamentation, cheilocystidia shape and host preference, and modern work has split what was once treated as a single widespread Hebeloma crustuliniforme into several closely related taxa. The name is nonetheless firmly attached to the common, path-side, radish-scented fungus described here.
How to identify it
Cap
3–9 cm across, convex with a strongly inrolled margin when young, expanding to flat or shallowly depressed with a low broad umbo. The surface is smooth, slightly greasy or tacky when moist and silky-matt when dry, cream to pale clay-buff or tan, typically a shade darker over the centre and paler at the margin. There are no fibres, scales or veil patches.
Gills
Sinuate to adnexed, very crowded, narrow, pale clay or greyish-cream when young and maturing to a dull snuff-brown. The edges are whitish and minutely fringed, and in humid weather bear clear watery droplets that dry to leave characteristic rusty-brown spotting.
Stipe
4–9 cm tall and 8–20 mm thick, firm and cylindrical, often with a slightly swollen or bulbous base. It is white to pale cream throughout, solid at first and becoming stuffed, and is covered in fine white floccose granules in the upper third, giving a mealy or scurfy texture. There is no ring.
Flesh and spore print
Flesh is white and firm, unchanging when cut. The odour is strong and unmistakably of raw radish or turnip. The spore print is snuff-brown to clay-brown; the spores are almond-shaped and minutely warted, a genus feature that separates Hebeloma from the smooth-spored fibrecaps.
Where and when it grows
This fungus grows from soil in deciduous, mixed and coniferous woodland and in planted amenity landscapes, and is particularly characteristic of compacted path edges, roadside verges, grassy woodland rides, hedge banks and the ground beneath isolated planted trees. It favours neutral to calcareous and disturbed soils and often appears in large troops, arcs or partial rings of dozens of fruitbodies.
Its principal hosts include birch, oak, beech, willow, poplar and lime among broadleaf trees, and pine and spruce among conifers. Fruiting is mainly in autumn, sometimes continuing into early winter. It is widespread and common throughout Europe, North America and temperate Asia, and readily follows planted trees into parks, gardens and urban plantings.
Ecological role
Hebeloma crustuliniforme is ectomycorrhizal, wrapping the fine root tips of its host trees in a dense fungal mantle and forming a branching network of hyphae between the outer root cells. Nutrients scavenged from soil and litter, above all nitrogen, are transferred through this interface to the tree, while the fungus receives sugars. It is a well-known partner in forestry nursery research, where it readily colonises seedling roots.
As a tolerant generalist it is one of the first mycorrhizal fungi to establish on disturbed, compacted and nutrient-enriched ground, which explains its abundance along paths, verges and around recently planted trees. Its ability to fruit in dense troops on trodden ground makes it a familiar indicator of an active mycorrhizal network in young or heavily used woodland.
Similar species
Other Hebeloma species are the main confusion. Hebeloma sinapizans is larger and more robust, with a more strongly radish-scented flesh and a stipe whose interior shows a distinctive downward-pointing plug of tissue at the top of the hollow. Hebeloma mesophaeum is smaller and clearly two-toned, with a darker brown centre, a paler margin and veil remnants forming a fibrillose zone on the stipe.
Pale Cortinarius species have a cobwebby cortina and rusty rather than snuff-brown spore prints. Fibrecaps such as Inocybe rimosa differ in their dry radially fibrous, splitting caps and lack the beading gill edges and radish odour. Cream-capped Agaricus species can be excluded at once by their free gills that turn pink then dark chocolate-brown and by a distinct ring.
