Hebeloma radicosum Identification Guide
The one Hebeloma nobody confuses once they have dug it up: a scaly-capped, ringed mushroom with a long tapering root running down to a buried animal latrine and a powerful almond scent.
The First Impression
You meet this species in mature deciduous woodland, most often under beech or oak on heavier soils, standing singly or in small clumps on the leaf-litter floor. The first impression is of something considerably grander than a typical Hebeloma. The cap is broad, pale clay to buff, dappled with small darker fibrillose scales, and it sits on a stout white stem carrying a real, visible ring. Everything about the profile says a substantial, well-built mushroom rather than one of the anonymous brown Hebeloma species of path edges.
Then you get close and there is the smell. It is strong, sweet and unmistakably of almond or marzipan, sometimes with a bitter-almond edge, and it carries a surprising distance on still air in a damp wood. Between the ring, the scaly cap and that scent, you already have the identification before you touch the base. Confirming it means digging.
The Cap in Detail
Caps run 4 to 12 cm across, occasionally larger. They open from convex to broadly convex and finally almost flat, usually keeping a low broad umbo. The ground colour is pale clay, ochre-buff or dull cream, sometimes with a warmer tan disc.
The surface is the useful part. It is viscid to greasy in wet weather, and over the disc and inner half it is broken into small, appressed, brownish fibrillose scales or squamules, denser at the centre and thinning outward. Sometimes these are little more than darker fibrils; in well-developed specimens they are distinct, slightly raised and clearly darker than the ground. That scaliness immediately separates the species from the bald, smooth-capped Hebeloma species. The margin is inrolled when young, often with a few pallid veil fragments hanging from it before the ring separates.
Gills, Ring, Stipe and Root
Gills are crowded, narrow to moderately broad, and adnate or notched at the stipe. They begin whitish to pale clay and mature through dull grey-brown to warm snuff-brown. The edges are whitish, finely fringed under a lens, and they may bead sparingly with droplets in humid weather, though nothing like as conspicuously as in some relatives.
The ring is a proper structure, not a smudge. It sits in the upper half of the stipe, is white and membranous, sometimes floccose and easily damaged, and it flares outward or hangs downward. Spores falling onto it dust it brown as the cap matures, making it more obvious with age.
Above the ring the stipe is white, smooth and finely mealy or pruinose at the very top. Below the ring, the surface is decorated with woolly or scaly white to brownish patches arranged in rough bands or chevrons, echoing the cap scales. The stipe proper is 5 to 12 cm of visible length and 1 to 2.5 cm thick, firm, solid then stuffed.
Now the critical part. Take a knife or trowel and excavate carefully, following the stipe downward. Below soil level it continues as a long, gradually tapering pseudorhiza, a rooting extension that can descend 10 to 30 cm and occasionally further, twisting around stones and roots on the way. It is whitish to dingy brown, tough and cord-like at the tip. If you tear the fruitbody free without digging, you throw away the single best character in the species. Where the root ends you will frequently find soil enriched by an abandoned mole nest, latrine or small mammal burrow, sometimes still recognisable as a chamber of compacted grass.
Flesh and Colour Change
Slice the fruitbody lengthwise from cap to root. The flesh is white and thick in the cap centre, white in the stipe, and it stays white on exposure; there is no blueing, no reddening and no rapid browning. Very old specimens can dull to a dingy cream in the stipe base. The almond scent intensifies noticeably once the flesh is cut, so if you are hesitating on the smell in the field, cut first and sniff the fresh surface.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Use a mature cap, trim it flush and leave it gills-down on white paper under a cover for three to six hours. The deposit is dull clay-brown to snuff-brown, warm and muted, the standard Hebeloma colour. That print colour is what excludes several of the ringed, rooting mushrooms it superficially resembles.
Under a microscope, spores are almond-shaped with a slightly beaked apex, around 8 to 10 micrometres long by 5 to 6 wide, and distinctly warted or verrucose, and they react reddish in Melzer's reagent. Gill-edge cystidia are clavate to slightly ventricose.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
The substrate is soil in mature broadleaved woodland, with beech, oak, hornbeam and occasionally other hosts. The fungus is ectomycorrhizal with those trees, so it needs living roots, but its distribution within a wood is controlled by something else entirely.
Hebeloma radicosum belongs to a small group known as ammonia fungi, which fruit on soil enriched by nitrogenous waste. Its root leads down to the latrines and abandoned nests of moles and small rodents, where decomposing droppings and nesting material release ammonia and other nitrogen compounds into the soil. The mycelium exploits that pocket and sends its fruitbody up through a long pseudorhiza to reach the surface. Practically, this makes the species a biological indicator: finding one tells you there is, or was, a mole or rodent chamber directly beneath. It also explains why fruitbodies appear in the same tiny spots year after year, and why they are scattered rather than in troops.
Season is late summer through autumn, typically September to November in temperate regions, following steady rain.
Separating It From Look-alikes
Within Hebeloma, nothing else combines a scaly cap, a membranous ring and a long root. Hebeloma sinapizans is large and can have a somewhat rooting base, but it has a smooth bald cap, no ring, a radish smell rather than almond, and its hollow stipe carries a distinctive hanging plug of tissue in the cavity. Hebeloma crustuliniforme is smooth-capped, ringless, unrooted and smells of radish. Hebeloma mesophaeum is much smaller, two-toned, and has only a fibrillose veil girdle, never a membranous ring.
Outside the genus, the scope for confusion lies with other ringed or rooting species, and the spore print settles most of them.
Honey fungus, Armillaria species, has a ring and can be scaly, but it grows in dense clusters from wood, roots or stumps rather than singly from soil, has white spore prints, and its gills stay pale.
Hymenopellis radicata, the rooting shank, has a long tapering root and a similar habitat, but its cap is smooth, wrinkled and slimy, its gills are broad, widely spaced and white, it has no ring, and its spore print is white.
Phaeolepiota aurea is large and scaly with a ring, but the whole fruitbody is a striking golden granular orange-brown and it has an ochre print and no root.
Agrocybe praecox and its allies have a ring and a dull brown print, but they are smaller, smooth-capped, grow in mulch and grassy places rather than deep woodland soil, have no rooting pseudorhiza and lack the almond scent.
Cortinarius species never develop a membranous ring, only a cortina, and their prints are rusty orange-brown.
