Hemlock Varnish Shelf

A shiny, varnish-coated bracket with a mahogany-red upper surface and creamy white pore layer, fruiting almost exclusively on dead eastern hemlock. Its lacquered finish and conifer substrate make it one of the most recognisable shelf fungi of northern forests.
Overview
Ganoderma tsugae belongs to the Ganodermataceae, a family defined by double-walled, truncated, ornamented spores that give the group its characteristic cocoa-brown spore deposit. Within that family it sits in the so-called lacquered clade — species whose upper surface is coated in a natural resinous crust so glossy it looks freshly polished or dipped in shellac.
What makes this species distinctive is the pairing of that lacquered finish with a strictly coniferous substrate. Across eastern North America, the varnished Ganoderma found on eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is almost always this species, while its hardwood-dwelling relatives occupy oak, maple and other broadleaf logs. It is an annual fungus, building a fresh bracket each season rather than adding perennial tube layers, so the shelves are comparatively soft and light for their size.
Because hemlock stands are a defining feature of cool, shaded ravines and north-facing slopes, this polypore is often used as an indicator of hemlock-dominated forest. Where hemlock has been lost to insect damage or logging, standing dead trunks can carry dozens of shelves at once, producing a striking display of red-brown discs against grey bark.
How to identify it
Cap
The fruiting body forms a kidney-shaped to fan-shaped bracket 5–30 cm across, occasionally with a thick lateral stalk. The upper surface is smooth, hard and coated in a resinous varnish that reflects light; mature colour runs from deep mahogany and oxblood red through orange-brown, usually zoned in concentric bands. The actively growing margin is white to pale yellow and blunt, narrowing and darkening as the season advances.
Pores
The underside is a fine pore surface, white to cream when fresh, discolouring dull brown where scratched or handled. Pores are minute and round, roughly 4–6 per millimetre, and the tube layer is single (annual) and pale, contrasting with the darker context above it.
Stipe
A stipe may be absent, or present as a short thick lateral column, equally lacquered and often darker than the cap. Attached specimens frequently emerge directly from bark with no stalk at all.
Flesh & spore print
The context is soft and white to pale buff when young, corky and pale tan in age — noticeably paler and softer than the dark brown context of many relatives. The spore deposit is brown, and in dense colonies the powdery brown dust often coats the shelves below.
Where and when it grows
Ganoderma tsugae fruits on dead and dying eastern hemlock — standing snags, fallen trunks, stumps and large branches — and occasionally on other conifers such as spruce, fir and pine. It is essentially a species of hemlock forest, hollows, and shaded stream ravines in eastern and northeastern North America, extending west around the Great Lakes and south along the Appalachians.
Fruiting is early by polypore standards, with the first white knobs appearing in late spring and expanding through early summer; brackets may persist in a hardened, faded state for months afterward. Fresh flushes often follow a wet spell, and a single decaying trunk can support successive tiers over several consecutive years.
Ecological role
This species is a saprotroph and weak parasite causing a white rot: its enzymes degrade lignin along with cellulose, leaving the residual wood pale, soft, and fibrous or spongy. Colonisation usually begins in dead heartwood or through wounds at the base of a stressed tree, and the fungus may fruit for several seasons as it works through the trunk.
By breaking down the dense, resinous wood of conifers, it accelerates nutrient turnover in forests where decay is otherwise slow because of cool temperatures and acidic litter. Hollowed hemlock snags colonised by this fungus provide nesting cavities and invertebrate habitat, and the brackets themselves host beetle larvae and fungus gnats.
Similar species
Ganoderma lucidum in the strict sense, and the North American hardwood species often labelled G. sessile, share the same lacquered red-brown surface but grow on broadleaf wood — oak, maple, elm — rather than hemlock, and their context is typically darker brown and more distinctly zoned. Substrate is the quickest field separation, and cutting a shelf in half to compare the pale, soft context of the hemlock species is a useful confirmation.
Ganoderma applanatum, the artist's conk, has a dull, matte, grey-brown crust with no varnish, is perennial with stacked tube layers, and is far harder. Fomitopsis pinicola also grows on conifers and has a resinous crust, but forms a hoof-shaped perennial bracket with a distinct red-orange band, a white margin, and a white spore deposit rather than brown.
