A medium orange waxcap with a dry matt cap, pale orange decurrent-toothed gills and a distinct honey odour that becomes obvious as the fruit body dries.

Overview

The Honey Waxcap is a mid-sized orange species of autumn grassland, named for the sweet honey odour that develops in the flesh, most noticeably as a picked fruit body starts to dry. It is one of the few waxcaps whose smell is a genuinely reliable field character, and it turns a difficult identification within the orange group into a straightforward one.

It sits in Hygrocybe alongside the other bright grassland waxcaps, with the usual thick, soft, distant, waxy gills and white spore print. Structurally its distinguishing features are the dry, matt to faintly silky cap — not viscid, not scurfy — and a stem that is dry and smooth, coloured orange with a paler, often yellow base.

The species commemorates the British mycologist Derek Reid and was separated relatively recently from the tangle of orange waxcaps once passed off under broader names, so older records may be hidden under Hygrocybe marchii or similar.

How to identify it

Cap

2–5 cm across, conical to convex at first, expanding to flat or slightly depressed, sometimes with a low broad umbo and a margin that becomes wavy. The surface is dry, matt to minutely silky-fibrillose, and never slimy. Colour is orange to apricot or reddish-orange, fading with age to yellow-orange, and older caps often show a paler, more yellow margin.

Gills

Thick, waxy, broad and well spaced, adnate with a short decurrent tooth. They are pale orange to yellow-orange, distinctly paler than the cap, and often interveined near the stem apex.

Stipe

3–7 cm tall, 4–8 mm thick, cylindrical or slightly compressed and grooved, dry, smooth and hollow. It is orange to yellow-orange, usually becoming clearly yellow or whitish towards the base. No ring, no volva.

Flesh, odour and spore print

The flesh is thin, orange to yellowish and does not change colour when cut. The odour is the key: sweet and honey-like, sometimes faint on fresh material but strengthening markedly as the fruit body dries or is warmed in the hand. The spore print is white, with smooth ellipsoid spores.

Where and when it grows

It grows in short, closed, unimproved grassland — churchyards, old pastures, cemetery lawns, upland grazed turf, coastal grassland and mossy banks — and also strays into grassy woodland rides and clearings more often than most waxcaps. It favours moss-rich, low-nutrient soils and is absent from fertilised or recently reseeded fields.

Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, with the main period from September to November, usually in small scattered troops. The species is widespread in temperate Europe, fairly common in Britain and Ireland, and reported from other temperate regions, though its recent taxonomic history means older distribution records are patchy.

Ecological role

Like the rest of the grassland waxcaps, Hygrocybe reidii forms a persistent soil mycelium rather than decaying wood or litter. Isotopic and molecular evidence points to biotrophy — a nutritional link with grassland plants or mosses — which explains why waxcaps colonise so slowly, resist cultivation, and vanish when turf is ploughed or fertilised.

The honey odour comes from volatile compounds in the flesh and is strongest during drying, when tissue breakdown releases them. Fruiting responds to autumn rainfall, and established colonies produce fruit bodies from the same patches of turf over many consecutive seasons.

Similar species

Hygrocybe coccinea is scarlet rather than orange, with a smooth, slightly greasy cap and no distinctive odour. Hygrocybe miniata is smaller with a minutely scurfy or scaly cap surface visible with a lens. Hygrocybe insipida is small, orange-yellow and viscid on both cap and stem. Hygrocybe chlorophana is clear yellow with a viscid cap.

Hygrocybe splendidissima is larger, scarlet to blood-red with a dry cap and can have a faint honeyed smell too, but it is much more robust with a stouter stem coloured red well down its length. Within the orange group, the combination of a dry matt cap, a dry stem yellowing at the base, decurrent-toothed pale gills and a clear honey odour on drying points to the Honey Waxcap.
