Horn of Plenty Identification Guide

A field guide to spotting Craterellus cornucopioides in leaf litter, reading its hollow funnel, smooth fertile outer surface and pale spore print, and separating it from the grey chanterelles and other dark funnel fungi.

Learning to See It at All

Almost everything about identifying Horn of Plenty happens before you have picked one up, because the real difficulty is seeing it. Its dark grey-brown to blackish colour sits precisely in the tonal range of wet beech leaves, and the funnel shape reads to the eye as a shadow or a gap. Experienced observers stop looking for the fungus and start looking for holes: small dark voids in an otherwise even carpet of litter. Once your brain registers the first one, a dozen more usually appear within a metre.

Typical settings are mossy banks under beech, oak woodland on heavy clay or calcareous soil, and shaded slopes along woodland paths. The fungus is strongly gregarious and grows in dense troops or clustered tufts, so a single find nearly always means many more.

Reading the Fruit Body Shape

Pick one and turn it over in your hand. The fruit body is a continuous hollow trumpet, 3 to 12 cm tall, with no meaningful division between cap and stipe: the funnel narrows smoothly downward and the cavity runs all the way to the base. If you cut it lengthwise you get two thin curved blades of tissue and nothing else, with no solid stem core and no separate cap flesh.

The mouth of the trumpet is 2 to 8 cm across, with a margin that is wavy, lobed, irregularly split and usually rolled outward or downward. Old fruit bodies become torn and tattered at the rim.

The whole thing is thin, pliable and slightly rubbery, and the flesh is barely a millimetre thick. It flexes rather than snapping.

The Two Surfaces

Now examine the inner and outer surfaces separately, because they look and behave quite differently.

The inner surface, the wall of the funnel facing up into the cavity, is the sterile face. It is dark: sooty brown, blackish-brown, or nearly black when wet, fading to greyer brown as it dries. Under a lens it is scurfy, minutely scaly or roughened, giving a slightly matt, felted appearance.

The outer surface, facing down and outward, carries the spores. It is pale by comparison: ash-grey, grey-brown, or smoky lilac-grey, and it is smooth to shallowly wrinkled, with low, blunt, irregular veins running down it and occasionally forking. There are absolutely no true gills. As spores mature, this surface takes on a distinct whitish or greyish bloom, as though it had been lightly dusted with flour, and that pruinose look is a helpful confirmation that the specimen is mature.

Run a fingertip down the fertile surface. It should feel smooth or faintly ridged, never bladed or sharp-edged.

Base, Flesh and Colour Change

At the base the trumpet narrows to a slender, often flattened point 3 to 8 mm wide, frequently curved and sometimes fused with neighbours so that two or three fruit bodies share a common attachment. Black mycelial threads may be visible binding leaf fragments.

The flesh is thin, grey-brown and unchanging. Cut it and nothing happens: no bleeding, no milk, no reddening, no blueing. Old material dries hard and blackish, and dried fruit bodies retain their shape well. The odour is pleasant and slightly aromatic, sometimes faintly fruity in a mass of fresh material.

Taking a Spore Print

This is a fungus where the print matters, because it separates species that look near-identical in the field. Cut a fruit body vertically in half, lay one half fertile-side down on a piece of black paper or clean glass, cover it and leave it four to eight hours in a humid, still place. Because the fertile surface is the outside of the funnel, resting the specimen flat on its side works better than trying to stand it upright.

The deposit is white to pale cream or faintly buff-ochre. Judging that pale colour requires a dark background and good daylight; hold the paper at an angle to the light and compare it against a white reference. Microscopically the spores are smooth, thin-walled and broadly ellipsoid, roughly 8 to 12 by 5 to 8 micrometres.

Substrate, Habitat and Season

Horn of Plenty is mycorrhizal, forming partnerships with broadleaved trees, above all beech and oak, and occasionally hornbeam, birch or lime. It fruits from soil among leaf litter and moss, never from wood, and shows a marked preference for heavier soils, clay banks, and calcareous or neutral ground on shaded slopes.

The season runs from mid or late summer into late autumn, peaking after sustained rain. Fruiting is often patchy between years but the same patches recur reliably, which makes noting locations worthwhile.

Separating the Look-Alikes

Grey Chanterelle (Craterellus cinereus) is the most similar. It shares the dark funnel and the woodland habitat, but its fertile surface bears well-developed, blunt, decurrent gill-like folds: visibly raised, branching and anastomosing ridges rather than a smooth or shallowly wrinkled face. Run a finger down it and you can feel the ribs.

Pseudocraterellus undulatus is smaller and more slender, greyish-brown rather than black, with a more strongly wrinkled and veined fertile surface and a markedly crisped, undulating margin. Its funnel is often not hollow all the way down.

Craterellus fallax, of North America, is separated by spore print: it drops a distinctly ochre-salmon or pale orange-buff deposit rather than a white to cream one, so the print is the decisive test between two field-identical fungi.

Yellowfoot (Craterellus tubaeformis) and Craterellus lutescens are far paler, with yellow to orange stipes and, in Yellowfoot, distinct decurrent gill folds and a brown cap contrasting with the yellowish stem.

Devil's Urn (Urnula craterium) is a spring ascomycete with a stiff, leathery, goblet-shaped cup that is black inside and brown-felted outside, attached to buried hardwood sticks. It does not taper into a hollow tube and has a definite cup rim.

Dark Helvella species and bird's nest fungi cause momentary confusion at a distance only; both resolve instantly on close inspection, the Helvella by its saddle cap on a fluted stalk, the bird's nests by their egg-like peridioles.

Field Checklist

Common questions

Why is Horn of Plenty so hard to see?
Its dark grey-brown to blackish colouring matches wet leaf litter almost exactly, and the funnel shape reads as a shadow rather than an object. The practical trick is to scan for small dark holes or voids in an even carpet of leaves rather than for a mushroom shape; once you locate one, the rest of the troop usually becomes obvious.
Does it have gills?
No. The spore-bearing surface is the outer, downward-facing wall of the trumpet, and it is smooth to shallowly wrinkled with low blunt veins that may fork. When mature it takes on a whitish or grey bloom from the spores. Any specimen with clearly raised, blade-like decurrent folds is a different species.
What spore print colour should I expect?
White to pale cream, sometimes with a faint buff tinge. Lay a halved fruit body fertile-side down on dark paper or glass for four to eight hours under a cover. In North America the print also separates it from Craterellus fallax, which drops an ochre-salmon deposit while looking identical in the field.
What habitat and season should I target?
