An orange-brown North American milkcap recognised instantly by its very widely spaced, waxy-looking white gills and copious white latex that does not change colour. Its dry, velvety, wrinkled cap adds to the resemblance to a waxcap.
Overview
Lactarius hygrophoroides is named for its resemblance to the genus Hygrophorus — its gills are so widely spaced, thick and waxy-looking that at first glance the mushroom hardly looks like a milkcap at all. Turning a cap over and seeing a dozen or so broad, well-separated white gills is effectively diagnostic in eastern North American oak woods.
The cap is a warm orange-brown to tawny or rusty-orange, dry, matt and finely velvety, and typically becomes wrinkled or rugose toward the centre as it expands. There is no zoning, no sliminess and no hairy margin, and the whole fruiting body has a somewhat rough, suede-like feel.
The third character that completes the identification is the latex: white, released in quantity, and completely unchanging — it does not turn yellow, brown or lilac, and it does not stain the white flesh. That combination of distant gills, dry tawny cap and unchanging white latex separates it from the several orange-brown milkcaps it grows alongside.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 3–10 cm across, convex then flat and finally shallowly depressed. The surface is dry, matt to finely velvety or slightly granular, and typically develops radial wrinkles or a rugose, uneven texture with age. Colour is orange-brown, tawny, rusty-orange or warm cinnamon, unzoned, sometimes fading paler at the margin.
Gills
Gills are the signature feature: very distant, broad, thick and waxy in appearance, adnate to shortly decurrent, and white to cream, discolouring only slightly to pale buff or developing faint brownish spots where bruised. There are relatively few lamellulae, and the wide spacing makes the gill faces individually conspicuous.
Stipe
The stipe is 2–6 cm tall and 0.8–2 cm thick, cylindrical or tapering downward, dry, smooth to finely velvety, and coloured like the cap or paler — orange-buff to pale tawny. It is solid at first, becoming stuffed or hollow, and lacks a ring and a volva.
Flesh, latex and spore print
The flesh is white to pale cream, firm and brittle. Latex is white, copious and entirely unchanging: it stays white on exposure, does not yellow on a white cloth, and leaves no strong stain on the flesh or gills. Odour is mild. The spore print is white, and spores are broadly ellipsoid to subglobose with low amyloid warts and fine connecting lines.
Where and when it grows
This is a mycorrhizal species of hardwood forest, associating primarily with oaks (Quercus) and also with other broadleaved trees in mixed woods. It fruits singly, scattered or in small groups on soil and leaf litter, often along woodland trails, on slopes and in open oak-hickory forest, and it favours warm, humid conditions.
Its core range is eastern North America, from southern Canada and New England south through the Appalachians to the Gulf states and west to the eastern Great Plains, with related populations reported in eastern Asia. Fruiting runs from early summer through to early autumn, peaking in the humid mid-summer period after thunderstorms — earlier in the season than many autumn-fruiting milkcaps.
Ecological role
Lactarius hygrophoroides is ectomycorrhizal with oaks and other hardwoods, forming fungal sheaths on fine roots that extend the tree's reach for water and mineral nutrients in the well-drained soils of eastern deciduous forest. Summer fruiting suggests it is active during the warm, moist part of the growing season when host photosynthesis and root growth are at their peak.
The very open gill spacing has an aerodynamic consequence: broad, widely separated gills shed spores efficiently in the still, humid air beneath a closed summer canopy, where crowded gills would be more prone to clogging with moisture. Like other milkcaps, its pressurised latex system defends the fruiting body against invertebrate grazing, though slugs and beetle larvae still exploit older specimens heavily.
Similar species
Lactarius volemus is a similarly tawny, dry-capped species with copious white latex, but its gills are crowded rather than distant, its latex browns rapidly on exposure and stains the flesh brown, and it has a strong fishy odour. Lactarius corrugis is darker brick to reddish-brown with a strongly corrugated cap, crowded gills and browning latex. Lactarius subvellereus and L. deceptivus are white rather than tawny.
Among other distant-gilled orange mushrooms, Hygrophorus and Hygrocybe species have waxy gills but produce no latex when cut, and Lactarius luteolus is paler creamy-buff with crowded gills and browning latex. The pairing of very distant gills with unchanging white latex is unique to L. hygrophoroides in its range.
