Iceland Moss Identification Guide

A field-by-field walkthrough of Cetraria islandica, the erect brown strap-lichen of heaths and tundra, from channelled laciniae and marginal spines to the rarely seen apothecia.

The first impression and the ground you are standing on

You almost never find Iceland Moss by looking down at a single specimen. You notice a texture first: a loose, springy, chestnut-brown mat spread across open ground, rustling underfoot in dry weather like a handful of dead leaves. Step closer and the mat resolves into hundreds of separate upright tufts, each one a bundle of narrow, curled, antler-like straps three to ten centimetres tall, tangled with mosses and grey Cladonia stalks.

The setting is almost always open and impoverished: acid heathland, blanket bog margins, stabilised dunes, Arctic tundra, alpine fellfield, or the sparse floor of an old pine wood where light still reaches the ground. It wants low competition, low nutrients and plenty of light. If you are standing in dense grass, in shade, or on fertile ground, you are almost certainly looking at something else.

Reading the thallus

Cetraria islandica is a lichen, so there is no cap, stipe or gill to work through. The body — the thallus — is what you read instead, and it repays a careful look with a hand lens.

Take a single tuft and separate one branch. It should be a flattened strap, not a round stalk, dividing repeatedly into two so the whole tuft looks like a miniature set of antlers. The straps are typically 2–10 mm wide, but they are usually rolled inwards along their length into a deep trough or channel, which makes them look far narrower than they are. Flatten one out against a thumbnail to judge the true width.

Now check the margins. Along the edge of each strap you should find short, dark, stiff spine-like projections — cilia — spaced irregularly like tiny thorns. These marginal spinules are one of the most reliable characters in the group and are best seen against a pale background with a lens.

Colour runs from olive-brown to deep chestnut on the outer face, often glossy, sometimes almost blackish at the tips. The inner or lower face is paler — fawn, greyish or whitish — and the base of the tuft frequently flushes distinctly reddish or wine-coloured where it meets the soil. That red base is a useful confirmation.

Finally, look for pseudocyphellae: small, pale, elongated flecks scattered on the surface, which are breaks in the outer cortex. In C. islandica they occur on both faces but are usually easiest to see as short white dashes along the edges and on the paler side.

The moisture test

Iceland Moss changes character completely with humidity, and half of all misidentifications come from judging dry material. Dry, it is brittle and hard, snaps cleanly, and looks pale, dull and crisped. Wet, it becomes soft, leathery and pliable, darkens to olive or almost green-brown, and the channels open out.

Carry a little water. Wet a piece, wait a minute, and re-examine the width, the channelling and the marginal spines before you commit. Rehydrated material is what descriptions in the literature are written from.

Cutting a section

Slice a strap across with a razor blade and look at the cut edge under a lens. You should see a firm outer cortex on both faces, a thin bright green line just inside it — the layer of green algal cells, the photobiont — and a loose white medulla filling the centre. That green line confirms you have a lichen rather than a bryophyte, and its position just beneath both surfaces reflects the fact that in this species neither face is a true "underside": there are no root-like rhizines anywhere.

Reproductive structures instead of a spore print

There is no spore print to take here in the agaric sense. Iceland Moss reproduces mostly by simple fragmentation — pieces snap off in frost and wind and re-establish — and fertile material is genuinely uncommon.

When apothecia do occur they sit at the flared tips of the widest straps: flattened to shallowly concave discs 5–15 mm across, dark chestnut to almost black-brown, with a thin toothed or notched rim of thallus tissue. Cut one, squash a scrap of the disc in water, and you will see cylindrical asci each containing eight small, colourless, simple, ellipsoid to nearly spherical spores about 7–11 micrometres long. Soredia and isidia — the powdery and finger-like vegetative propagules common in other lichens — are absent, which is itself a character worth noting.

Substrate, season and ecology

The substrate is soil: humus, peat, sand or thin mineral ground, usually among mosses and dwarf shrubs such as crowberry and heather. It is circumpolar boreal-Arctic-alpine, descending to sea level in the north and retreating to high ground further south.

Being perennial, it is present in every month, which makes seasonality nearly useless for identification but very useful for repeat study — you can return to the same patch across years. Growth is slow, on the order of a few millimetres a year, so a large mat represents decades of stability. It is a sensitive indicator of open, unenriched habitat and disappears under shading, trampling and nitrogen deposition.

Separating the closest look-alikes on structure alone

Cetraria ericetorum is the hardest. Its straps are narrower and rolled more tightly, often almost tubular, its pseudocyphellae are longer and concentrated on the paler face, and marginal spines are sparser. Judge it on rehydrated material and on the proportion of the strap that is channelled.

Cetraria aculeata and relatives are round in cross-section — terete, wiry, spiny brown stalks with no flattened strap at all. One cut across settles it.

Cladonia species build hollow stalks or cups that rise from a mat of small scale-like squamules at ground level, and are usually grey-green rather than chestnut.

Flavocetraria nivalis and F. cucullata share the erect, channelled habit but are pale yellow-green to straw, never brown.

Platismatia glauca is broad, flat and grey, forming undulating leafy sheets rather than narrow upright antlers.

Peltigera species lie flat, have broad grey-brown lobes, and carry conspicuous raised veins and rhizines on the underside — characters entirely absent here.

True mosses, finally, have stems bearing leaves, each leaf usually with a midrib. Iceland Moss has no leaves and no stem; under a lens the difference is immediate.

What single character most reliably confirms Cetraria islandica in the field?
The combination of erect, flattened, repeatedly forked chestnut-brown straps that are rolled into channels, with short dark spine-like projections along their margins and pale flecked pseudocyphellae on the surface. Is Iceland Moss actually a moss?
