An unmistakable milkcap with a silvery indigo-blue cap and gills that bleed dark blue latex, staining green where handled. It forms mycorrhizal partnerships with oaks and pines across eastern North America, Central America and parts of East Asia.
Overview
The Indigo Milkcap is one of the few genuinely blue mushrooms in the northern hemisphere, and once seen it is almost impossible to confuse with anything else. Everything about the fruiting body is blue: the cap, the gills, the stipe surface and, most strikingly, the latex that wells out of any cut or broken gill.
It belongs to Lactarius, a large genus in the family Russulaceae whose members all exude a milky or watery latex from damaged tissue. Like its relatives it has brittle, granular flesh built from spherical cells (sphaerocysts) rather than fibrous hyphae, so the cap snaps cleanly like chalk instead of tearing. Within the genus, L. indigo sits in a small group of blue-lactating species that includes L. paradoxus and L. chelidonium.
The blue colour fades with age and weathering, and old, sun-bleached specimens can look silvery-grey or pale, so the reliable test is always to slice the flesh and watch the latex emerge. Over minutes to hours, exposed surfaces and spilled latex oxidise to a dull green, and old fruiting bodies are frequently blotched with green patches.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 5–15 cm across, at first convex with a strongly inrolled margin, then flattening and finally becoming shallowly to deeply funnel-shaped (infundibuliform). The surface is indigo to silvery-blue, often with a slight silvery bloom, and is marked with darker concentric zones like a target. It is slightly sticky when wet and dry and smooth when not. With age or exposure the blue fades toward pale silvery-grey or greenish, and bruised areas turn verdigris-green.
Gills
The gills are close, narrow and adnate to slightly decurrent, running a short way down the stipe. They are indigo-blue, becoming paler and greyer with maturity, and stain green where rubbed or bruised. Short gills (lamellulae) are interspersed among the full-length ones.
Stipe
The stipe is 2–8 cm tall and 1–2.5 cm thick, roughly cylindrical or tapering slightly downward, indigo-blue and often pitted with small shallow depressions called scrobicules. It becomes hollow with age. There is no ring and no volva.
Flesh, latex and spore print
The flesh is pale blue to whitish, marbled with blue, and brittle. Cut tissue releases a dark indigo-blue latex that is moderately abundant in fresh, moist specimens and slowly turns green on exposure to air. Dry weather can make the latex sparse. The spore print is cream to pale yellow, and the spores are broadly elliptical with an amyloid warty-reticulate ornamentation.
Where and when it grows
Lactarius indigo is a mycorrhizal species that forms sheathing root associations with both hardwoods and conifers, most commonly oaks (Quercus) and pines (Pinus). It fruits singly, scattered or in loose groups on soil and leaf litter in open woodland, along woodland trails and on sandy or well-drained banks, often in the same spots year after year.
It is characteristic of eastern and southern North America, from the Great Lakes region and New England south to the Gulf coast and Texas, and it extends through Mexico and Central America into montane pine-oak forest. Related blue-lactating populations are reported from eastern and southern Asia. Fruiting runs from midsummer through autumn, usually a week or two after sustained rain, and in subtropical parts of its range it can appear through much of the wet season.
Ecological role
The Indigo Milkcap is an ectomycorrhizal symbiont. Its hyphae wrap around and grow between the outer cells of fine tree roots, forming a mantle and Hartig net through which the fungus supplies the tree with water, phosphorus and nitrogen scavenged from a huge volume of soil, receiving photosynthetic sugars in return. Because of that dependence, it cannot be cultivated on dead organic matter and is only ever found within the rooting zone of living host trees.
The latex system is a defensive adaptation shared across the genus: pressurised laticifer cells run through the flesh and gills, so any insect or grazing animal that bites the fruiting body triggers an immediate flood of sticky exudate. In L. indigo the exudate also oxidises rapidly, producing the characteristic green staining that marks the feeding tracks of slugs and fungus gnat larvae on older caps.
Similar species
No other North American milkcap of this size and colour bleeds indigo latex, but a few relatives approach it. Lactarius paradoxus has a paler blue-grey to purplish cap with a metallic sheen and produces dark red-brown to purplish latex rather than clear indigo. Lactarius chelidonium is duller — greyish-yellow to bluish-buff — with yellowish to brownish latex. Lactarius deliciosus and its allies (L. deterrimus, L. thyinos) share the zoned cap and green-staining habit but are orange or carrot-coloured with orange latex, never blue.
At a distance a weathered, faded Indigo Milkcap can be mistaken for a grey Russula, but Russula species produce no latex at all when the gills are cut, which settles the question immediately.
