Overview
Inky Mushroom (Agaricus moelleri, long known as Agaricus praeclaresquamosus) belongs to the grey-scaled, yellow-staining group of Agaricus — a cluster of species whose caps are patterned with fine dark fibrillose scales over a pale ground, whose stipe bases flush bright chrome-yellow when cut, and whose flesh gives off a sharp inky or phenolic smell quite unlike the sweet aniseed of the arvensis group.
In all other respects it is a textbook Agaricus: free gills passing from pale grey through pink to deep chocolate, a membranous pendulous ring, no volva, and a dark brown spore print. Its distinguishing features are concentrated in colour and reaction rather than structure — the density of dark scales at the cap centre often makes the disc look almost uniformly grey-black while the margin stays much paler.
It is a common fungus of enriched, disturbed woodland soils and shaded parkland across Europe and neighbouring regions, and forms part of a confusing complex of similar grey-scaled species whose names have shifted repeatedly as mycologists have sorted them out.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 5–12 cm across, at first ovate or almost cuboid in the button stage, then convex and finally flattened with a slightly depressed or flat-topped disc. The ground is whitish, but it is densely covered with fine, flattened, dark grey-brown to blackish fibrillose scales that are concentrated toward the centre — often merging there into a solid dark cap — and become sparser and more scattered near the margin, giving a streaked grey appearance overall.
Gills
The gills are free from the stipe, crowded and narrow, pale greyish-white at first, then passing through a dull greyish-pink phase to dark chocolate brown at maturity.
Stipe
The stipe is 5–12 cm long and 1–1.5 cm thick, white and smooth, tapering slightly upward from a distinctly bulbous base. The ring is white, membranous and pendulous, usually persistent, often with small floccose patches on the underside. The critical reaction is at the base: scratching or slicing the bulb produces an immediate bright chrome-yellow stain, which slowly fades to dull brownish over the following minutes.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is white, thin in the cap, and yellows where cut — dramatically so in the stipe base, more faintly elsewhere. The odour is inky, chemical or phenolic, strongest in the base and intensified by warming the flesh between the fingers. The spore print is dark chocolate brown.
Where and when it grows
Inky Mushroom fruits on nutrient-rich soils in broadleaved and mixed woodland, particularly under beech, oak and lime, and is equally at home in shaded parkland, on tree-lined avenues, along hedgerows and in gardens and churchyards with mature trees. It favours humus-rich, disturbed and often slightly enriched ground, and appears singly, in scattered troops or in small groups and rings.
The season is late summer through autumn, following periods of rain. It is widespread across Europe, and related or identical taxa within the same grey-scaled complex are reported from North Africa, western Asia and parts of North America, though the naming of the North American populations has been a persistent source of confusion.
Ecological role
This species is a saprotroph of woodland and parkland soils, decomposing leaf litter, fine root debris and incorporated humus. It forms no root partnership with the trees it grows beneath — the tree association reflects the litter type and soil enrichment it prefers rather than any mycorrhizal link. Its tolerance of disturbed and nutrient-loaded ground explains its frequency in urban parks and along managed avenues.
The mycelium is perennial and often produces fruit bodies from the same patch across many seasons, sometimes in arcs marking the outward growth of the colony. In breaking down the annual leaf-fall of broadleaved trees it contributes to humus formation and nutrient recycling, while its fruit bodies feed slugs, snails and a range of fly larvae that in turn distribute spores through the litter layer.
Similar species
Flat-topped Agaricus (Agaricus placomyces) is extremely close, sharing the grey-scaled cap, bulbous yellow-staining base and inky odour; it is chiefly a North American taxon with a characteristically flattened cap and often brownish patches on the ring underside, and the two have frequently been confused in the literature. Felt-ringed Agaricus (Agaricus hondensis) also yellows and smells phenolic but has a pinker-brown, less contrastingly scaled cap and a notably thick, felty ring.
Yellow Stainer (Agaricus xanthodermus) shares the instant chrome-yellow base reaction and inky odour but has a smooth white cap, often squared-off when young, with no dark scales at all. Blushing Wood Mushroom (Agaricus silvaticus) has warm reddish-brown rather than grey-black scales and its cut flesh turns red, not yellow — the two reactions are easy to distinguish side by side.
