First impression and where you are standing
This is a spring mushroom, and that alone narrows the field enormously. You are on chalk or limestone, in open beech, lime or hornbeam woodland, along a track edge or on a grassy bank under mature trees, some time between late May and early July. Most fibrecaps come much later in the year.
What you see is a stout, pale, silky-looking mushroom in small scattered groups, often half-buried in leaf litter. It reads as ivory or straw-white at first, then as you look along the group you notice that some caps carry salmon or brick-red smears — usually at the margin, or exactly where a slug has grazed or a boot has clipped them. That mixture of clean pale caps and rusty-red stained caps within one troop is the visual signature of the species.
Reading the cap
Cap diameter is 3–8 cm, which is large for the genus and part of the reason this species stands out.
Young caps are conical to bell-shaped with the margin pressed inwards. As they expand they become broadly convex to flat while retaining a distinct broad umbo in the centre. The surface is dry, never sticky, and finely silky-fibrillose: with a lens you can see fine appressed fibres radiating from the centre.
With age those radial fibres separate and the margin splits, producing the torn, rimose appearance that gives the genus its English name. The ground colour is whitish, ivory, or pale straw, and this is where the reddening matters — bruised or aged tissue flushes brick-red to salmon, often in irregular patches or streaks along the fibres. Wet a fingertip and rub the cap surface gently: within a few minutes the rubbed patch should redden.
The gills
The gills are adnexed — narrowly attached and often notched at the stipe — crowded, narrow to moderately broad, with the edge whitish and, under a lens, minutely fringed.
Follow the colour sequence carefully. In young buttons they are whitish to pale cream. As spores mature they run through pale clay to a dull olive-tinged brown or snuff-brown. They never become pink, never become rusty-orange, and never become chocolate. Bruised gills redden like the rest of the fruit body.
Stipe, base and flesh
The stipe is 4–9 cm tall and 1–2 cm thick, notably solid and firm for a fibrecap, whitish, and covered in fine longitudinal fibrils. Only the extreme apex may be minutely powdery; most of the stipe is not.
There is no ring and no cortina remnant of any substance. The base is at most slightly swollen or club-shaped and is never sharply marginate-bulbous, and there is no volva. Handle the stipe firmly and it stains reddish where gripped; the base often colours first.
Split the fruit body lengthwise. The flesh is white and firm, and it reddens slowly over several minutes, most visibly in the stipe base and the cap centre. The odour is faint, often described as slightly fruity, spermatic, or simply earthy — it is a supporting note rather than a decisive one.
Taking and reading a spore print
Set a mature cap gill-down on white paper, covered with a bowl, for four to eight hours. The paper needs to be white because the print is mid-toned and easily misjudged on grey card.
The colour to expect is a dull clay-brown or snuff-brown — a flat, slightly greyish brown with no orange fire in it. Rusty-ochre would move you to Cortinarius, dark chocolate to Agaricus, salmon-pink to Entoloma, and pure white to Calocybe, Tricholoma or Lepiota.
Microscopy is straightforward and decisive. Mount a scrap of gill in water or dilute potassium hydroxide. Spores are smooth-walled, ellipsoid to somewhat amygdaliform, roughly 10–13 by 5.5–7 micrometres, with no nodules, angles or bumps. The cheilocystidia on the gill edge are thin-walled and clavate; crucially, there are no thick-walled, crystal-capped metuloid cystidia on the gill faces. That combination — smooth spores plus absent metuloids — splits this species from a large section of the genus.
Substrate, hosts and season
Inocybe erubescens is ectomycorrhizal. It grows from soil, associating with the fine roots of broadleaved trees, most often beech and lime, but also hornbeam and oak. It has a firm preference for calcareous ground: chalk downland woods, limestone escarpments, and lime-rich clay.
It is one of the earliest fibrecaps of the year, fruiting from late spring into early summer, and it is largely finished by the time the autumn fungal season begins. In Europe it is widespread but local, always tied to the right soil and hosts.
Separating the closest look-alikes on morphology alone
Inocybe godeyi also reddens strongly and is the nearest relative in that respect. Separate it on the base: I. godeyi has a distinctly marginate bulb with an abrupt rim, is generally smaller and warmer ochre-buff in cap colour, fruits in autumn, and has thick-walled metuloid cystidia under the microscope.
Inocybe rimosa and the wider I. fastigiata group are the commonest confusions on shape. They are similarly conical-umbonate and strongly split at the margin, but their caps are yellow-brown to ochre-straw from the start and they show no red staining on handling.
Inocybe adaequata (I. jurana) is coloured wine-red to brick from the outset rather than acquiring red stains through bruising, prefers damper broadleaf woodland, and has larger spores. Ask whether the red is intrinsic or a reaction.
Inocybe geophylla and its lilac variety are far smaller, silky white to lilac, with a slender stipe, and never redden.
Calocybe gambosa is the classic spring lookalike on size, stature and pale colour, and it shares the calcareous habitat and the season. It is separated instantly by a white spore print, sinuate rather than adnexed gills that stay white, a strongly farinaceous odour, and no reddening on handling.
Entoloma sinuatum is larger and greyer, gives a salmon-pink print, and has a strongly farinaceous odour.
Agaricus species have free gills, a proper membranous ring and a dark chocolate print.
Hebeloma species come closest on print colour, but they are typically greasy-capped, have a sharply raphanoid odour, and have gill edges that weep droplets in humid weather; their spores are roughened rather than smooth.
The practical routine is therefore: check the season and soil, watch for red staining on handling, take a print and confirm it is dull clay-brown, then, if a microscope is available, confirm smooth spores and the absence of metuloid cystidia.
