Iodine Bolete Identification Guide

A field walkthrough for Hemileccinum impolitum: a heavy, pale-capped oak bolete with tiny lemon pores, a dotted yellow stipe that never carries a raised net, and flesh that stubbornly refuses to change colour.

The Ground You Are Standing On

This is a warmth-loving bolete, and half the identification is done before you crouch down. Picture a sunlit oak wood on chalk or limestone, the sort with short grass along the rides, scattered mature Quercus rather than a closed canopy, and thin soil that dries hard in August. Hemileccinum impolitum pushes up on bare, trodden ground at the edge of a track, in mossy turf under an isolated oak, or in a grassy clearing where the light reaches the floor. It is a southern and central European species that reaches its northern limit as scattered warm-summer outposts, so if you are in cold acid spruce forest you should be looking at something else entirely.

It fruits after summer rain that follows heat, roughly from late June into October, usually as single fruitbodies or loose scatters of two or three rather than troops.

First Impressions

The overall impression is of a large, pale, matt, rather heavy bolete. Caps run 6 to 15 cm and sometimes reach 20 cm, and the fruitbody feels dense in the hand for its size. Three things register in the first second: the cap is pale clay or buff rather than brown, the pore surface is a startlingly clean lemon yellow, and the stipe is yellow and smooth-looking with no raised network anywhere on it.

Working Through the Cap

Run a thumb over the surface. Young caps are finely felted, almost suede-like, with a dull matt bloom that dulls reflections completely. As the cap expands the felt wears away and the surface becomes smoother, often with a faintly greasy feel in wet weather but never truly slimy. In dry spells the skin cracks into shallow, irregular fissures, but these are soft-edged and pale underneath rather than the neat tiled cracks of the small red-fissured boletes.

Colour is unhelpfully variable within a narrow range: pale clay, ochre-buff, greyish tan, sometimes with faint pinkish or straw blotching where rain has run over it. The shape is hemispherical and tightly tucked under at the margin for a long time, then broadly convex and finally flattened, usually with a narrow sterile rim that overhangs the tubes.

Reading the Pore Surface

Turn it over. The pores are small and round, and from a very young stage they are already bright lemon to chrome yellow, deepening to golden and finally taking on an olive cast in old fruitbodies. Tubes are the same yellow, one to two and a half centimetres deep, and are attached around the stipe apex or slightly depressed there.

Now do the test that matters most. Press the pores firmly with a thumb and watch for thirty seconds. On this species the surface either does not react at all or slowly dulls to an ochre or brownish smudge. There is no quick ink-blue flush. A large bolete with vivid yellow pores that declines to turn blue is already a short list, and this is the head of it.

Stipe and Base

The stipe is 5 to 12 cm long, stout, and typically thickest around the middle or lower third, tapering slightly to a narrowed base. It is lemon yellow over most of its length and covered, under a hand lens, in minute granular dots the same colour as the ground or slightly rustier. These dots are flush with the surface. Crucially there is no raised reticulation, not even a faint net at the very apex; if you find one you have moved out of Hemileccinum.

The extreme base is often flushed rusty brown, brick or wine colour, and may carry pale ochre mycelial felt binding soil grains. Dig rather than snap, because the base colours and the mycelial pad are part of the record.

Flesh, Colour Change and Odour

Slice the whole fruitbody vertically. The flesh is pale lemon in the cap, deeper yellow immediately above the tubes, paler and often whitish through the middle of the stipe, and frequently rusty or vinaceous in the base. Watch the cut face for a full minute. In most collections nothing happens at all; occasionally a faint greyish-blue shadow appears briefly just above the tube layer and then fades. That near-immobility is diagnostic.

The cut base has a distinctive chemical, iodine-like or carbolic odour that builds over a few minutes and is strongest in mature material. Hold the base up and give it time; the smell is often absent from the cap flesh entirely.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the stipe off flush with the tubes, set the cap pore-side down on a sheet of white paper with a strip of dark card underneath one edge, and cover it with an upturned bowl to stop draughts and slow drying. Leave it four to twelve hours somewhere still and at room temperature. A fresh, fully expanded cap that has not yet begun to collapse gives the heaviest deposit.

The print is a dull olive-brown to ochre-brown, thick and slightly greasy-looking where it is dense. Under a microscope the spores are smooth, spindle-shaped and roughly 10 to 16 by 4 to 6 micrometres. A pink, rusty or dark purple print rules out this genus immediately.

Substrate and Season Support the Name

This species is ectomycorrhizal and heavily attached to oak, with occasional records under lime and beech. It wants basic, calcareous or clay-over-chalk soils and warm ground. It never grows on wood, never with conifers, and does not appear in cold spring conditions. If your find is on a stump or in a sitka plantation, the habitat alone has failed the test.

Separating It From Look-alikes on Morphology Alone

Hemileccinum depilatum is the closest relative. Its cap is distinctly pitted, wrinkled and rugose rather than evenly felted, the colours run more ochre-yellow to olive, and it associates with hornbeam and hop-hornbeam rather than oak.

Butyriboletus appendiculatus and its relatives have richer brown caps, and, decisively, a fine raised reticulation over at least the upper stipe. Their yellow flesh also blues promptly where cut.

Butyriboletus fechtneri shares the pale cap but carries a pinkish-red band across the middle of the stipe and its flesh turns blue readily.

Caloboletus radicans has a whitish to grey cap and yellow pores, but everything blues instantly and strongly, and the stipe tapers into a rooting base with a fine net at the top.

Xerocomellus species are far smaller and thinner-fleshed, with coarse angular olive-yellow pores, a cracked cap showing colour in the fissures, and prompt blueing.

Hemileccinum subglabripes, the North American counterpart, is slimmer with a brown cap and a scurfy yellow stipe, and does not overlap in range.

The Working Checklist

Common questions

What single character separates the Iodine Bolete from most other yellow-pored boletes?
The lack of colour change. Cut or bruise a large bolete with bright lemon pores and most relatives flush blue within seconds; Hemileccinum impolitum stays yellow, or at most shows a faint fleeting grey shadow above the tubes. Combine that with a dotted, non-reticulate stipe and the field is very small.
