Overview

Omphalotus olearius is a striking fungus that fruits in large overlapping clumps at the base of hardwood stumps, its entire fruiting body a saturated pumpkin orange. It is best known for bioluminescence: the gills of fresh specimens emit a faint greenish glow, visible after several minutes of full dark adaptation, produced by an enzyme-driven reaction in living gill tissue.

The genus Omphalotus, in the family Omphalotaceae, contains a handful of orange, clustered, wood-inhabiting species scattered across the temperate and subtropical world. In Europe the classic species is O. olearius, in eastern North America the closely similar O. illudens, in western North America O. olivascens with olive tones, and in East Asia O. japonicus. All share decurrent true gills, off-centre stems, orange pigmentation, and a pale spore print.

Because it grows from buried roots and stump remnants, a clump can appear to rise straight out of grass or bare soil, which sometimes disguises its true nature as a wood-decay fungus.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 5-15 cm across and occasionally larger, convex with an inrolled margin when young, then flattening and finally becoming shallowly funnel-shaped or depressed at the centre. The surface is dry and smooth to faintly fibrillose, without scales or slime, and the colour is a strong orange to orange-brown or pumpkin, sometimes with olive or brownish tints in age. The margin is often wavy or lobed in crowded clusters.

Gills

The gills are the key feature. They are true gills: thin, blade-like, sharp-edged plates that are clearly separable from the cap flesh, not blunt folds or ridges. They are crowded, narrow, and run a long way down the stem, that is deeply decurrent, and they are the same orange as the cap or slightly deeper. In fresh material they may show a faint greenish luminescence in complete darkness.

Stipe

The stipe is 3-15 cm long and 1-2 cm thick, often curved and frequently off-centre or attached towards one side of the cap, tapering towards a pointed base where it is fused with its neighbours into a common orange mass. It is smooth, the same orange colour, and has neither a ring nor a volva.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is orange throughout the cap and stem, firm and fibrous, and does not stain a different colour when cut. That orange interior is a valuable check. The spore print is cream to very pale yellowish white.

Where and when it grows

This fungus fruits in dense overlapping clusters on and around the stumps of broadleaf trees, on exposed roots at the base of standing trunks, and above buried root systems, where the clump can emerge apparently from bare soil or turf a short distance from the tree. Oak is the classic host across its range, with olive being characteristic in the Mediterranean, and beech, chestnut, and other hardwoods also used.

The season runs from late summer through autumn, sometimes continuing into early winter in mild areas. Omphalotus olearius in the strict sense is a species of southern and central Europe and the Mediterranean basin, with closely related species covering eastern and western North America, East Asia, and other warm temperate regions. It is common in parkland, old orchards, woodland margins, and anywhere hardwood stumps persist.

Ecological role

Omphalotus species are wood decayers, acting as saprotrophs on dead stumps and roots and often as weak parasites on living trees, entering through roots and the butt of the trunk and causing a white rot that hollows out the base. A single colonised root plate can produce fruiting clumps for many consecutive years as the mycelium works through the remaining wood.

The bioluminescence for which the genus is famous is generated in living tissue, chiefly the gills, by an enzymatic oxidation reaction, and it is brightest in fresh actively growing fruiting bodies. Its function is not settled, but the leading suggestion is that the glow attracts night-flying insects which then carry spores away, supplementing wind dispersal. Ecologically the fungus contributes to the breakdown of hardwood stumps and root systems and to the creation of basal cavities in old trees.

Similar species

The Chanterelle, Cantharellus cibarius, is the classic comparison and separates on the fertile surface: it has blunt, thick, forking, vein-like ridges that run down the stem and cannot be cleanly pulled away from the flesh, whereas Omphalotus has thin, sharp, unforked, separable true gills. The Chanterelle is also a paler egg-yellow to apricot, has white flesh rather than orange, grows singly or scattered from soil as a mycorrhizal partner of trees, and has a fruity apricot smell.

The False Chanterelle, Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca, is much smaller and thinner, with soft, repeatedly forking, deeply decurrent gills in a brighter orange, a finely velvety cap, and it grows on conifer litter and rotten wood rather than in large hardwood clumps. The Spectacular Rustgill, Gymnopilus junonius, forms similar large orange clusters on stumps but has a rusty-orange spore print, rusty gills, and a distinct membranous ring. Velvet Shank, Flammulina velutipes, clusters on hardwood in the same way but is smaller with a viscid tawny cap and a dark velvety stem base.

Common questions about Jack-o'-Lantern

Does it really glow in the dark?
Yes, faintly. Fresh gills emit a soft greenish light produced by an enzymatic reaction in living tissue. Seeing it requires a completely dark room and ten or more minutes of eye adaptation, and older specimens stop glowing.
How do I distinguish it from a Chanterelle?
Examine the underside. Omphalotus has true thin, sharp-edged, separable gills; a Chanterelle has blunt forking ridges that merge into the flesh. Omphalotus flesh is orange, grows in clumps on wood, and Chanterelle flesh is white and grows singly from soil.
Why does it sometimes seem to grow from the lawn?
Because the mycelium is feeding on buried roots or an old stump below the surface. The clumps push up through soil or turf some distance from any visible wood.
What colour is the spore print?
Cream to pale yellowish white. That pale print separates it from rusty-spored clustering orange fungi such as Gymnopilus junonius.
