A vivid orange gilled mushroom that grows in dense clumps on hardwood stumps and roots, with sharp, deep, decurrent true gills whose edges can glow faintly in darkness.

Overview

The Jack O'Lantern is a striking woodland mushroom: a tight cluster of glowing-orange caps fused at the base, erupting from a stump or from soil above a buried root. Its colour, its clumped wood-inhabiting habit and its deep, blade-like decurrent gills make it one of the more memorable autumn finds in oak woodland.

The genus Omphalotus contains several similar orange species worldwide, separated mostly by geography: O. olearius in southern Europe and the Mediterranean, O. illudens in eastern North America, and O. olivascens, which has olive tones, on the west coast of North America. All share the same growth habit and gill structure.

The genus is also famous for bioluminescence. The gill edges of fresh specimens emit a faint greenish light produced by an enzymatic reaction in living tissue, visible only after several minutes of full dark adaptation. The glow fades as the mushroom ages and is one of the few genuinely luminous phenomena among temperate gilled fungi.

How to identify it

Cap

Caps are 4–20 cm across, at first convex with an inrolled margin, then flattening and finally becoming shallowly funnel-shaped with a wavy, often lobed margin. The surface is dry, smooth to very finely fibrillose, and bright orange, pumpkin-orange or orange-brown, sometimes with olive or brownish tints in the centre. Caps in a cluster press against one another and become distorted and asymmetrical.

Gills

The gills are the key character: true gills, thin, sharp-edged, deep, crowded, and running well down the stem in a strongly decurrent attachment. They are the same orange to yellow-orange as the cap, sometimes a shade paler, and they are clearly separable blades that can be lifted with a fingernail — not blunt folds. In fresh material the edges may show faint greenish luminescence in complete darkness.

Stipe

The stem is 4–20 cm long, 1–3 cm thick, orange, dry, firm, usually tapering downward and often curved because several stems in a cluster are fused at a common tough base. There is no ring and no volva.

Flesh & spore print

Flesh is orange throughout, firm and fibrous, and does not stain when cut. The spore print is cream to pale yellow — an important separator, since it is neither the pure white of some pale-gilled relatives nor a brown or pink deposit.

Where and when it grows

It grows in dense clusters on hardwood stumps, at the base of standing trees, and from soil directly over buried roots, where a clump appearing to grow on the ground is actually attached to wood below. Oak is the most frequent host in both Europe and North America, with olive, chestnut and other broadleaves also used; European O. olearius is particularly associated with olive groves and Mediterranean oak woodland.

Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, often in the same location year after year as long as the stump lasts. O. olearius is a southern European and Mediterranean species; the closely related O. illudens covers eastern North America and O. olivascens the Pacific states, so the exact name applied depends on region.

Ecological role

Omphalotus species are wood-decay fungi, acting as weak parasites on the roots and butts of living hardwoods and then as saprophytes on the remaining stump. They cause a white rot, degrading lignin so that colonised roots and heartwood become pale, soft and fibrous, and they can persist in a single large root system for many years, producing repeat flushes.

The bioluminescence for which the genus is known is produced by living mycelium and by the gill tissue of fresh fruiting bodies through a luciferin–luciferase reaction. Its function is debated, with the most common suggestion being the attraction of night-flying insects that help disperse spores. Whatever its purpose, it makes the genus a useful subject for studying fungal light production.

Similar species

Chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius) is the classic confusion, but the difference is structural: the chanterelle has blunt, thick, repeatedly forking false gills — shallow ridges running down the stem that cannot be cleanly separated from the cap flesh — whereas the Jack O'Lantern has true, thin, sharp-edged, non-forking blades. Chanterelles are also egg-yellow rather than pumpkin-orange, grow singly or scattered from soil in mycorrhizal association with trees, and have a fruity apricot smell and paler flesh.

False Chanterelle (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca) has soft orange gills that fork repeatedly, a felty brownish-orange cap, and grows on conifer litter and woodchip rather than in tight clumps on hardwood stumps. Velvet Shank (Flammulina velutipes) also clusters on hardwood but has a viscid tawny cap, a dark velvety stem base, and white spores. Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare) clusters similarly on stumps but is sulphur-yellow with greenish-tinged gills and a purple-brown spore print.

How do I tell it from a chanterelle?
Examine the underside. Jack O'Lantern has true, thin, sharp, crowded, non-forking gills that lift away as blades; chanterelles have blunt, forking, ridge-like false gills fused to the cap flesh. Habit differs too: dense clumps on wood versus scattered single mushrooms on soil.
Do the gills really glow?
Yes, faintly. Fresh gill edges emit a dim greenish light through a luciferin–luciferase reaction, visible only after several minutes in complete darkness, and the glow fades as the fruiting body ages.
It looks like it is growing from soil — is it?
Usually not. Clusters that appear terrestrial are almost always attached to a buried root or a decaying stump below ground; digging at the base normally reveals the woody attachment.
