A small rubbery club fungus with a slimy ochre-yellow head perched on a paler stalk, usually appearing in troops on damp woodland soil. Its gelatinous texture and irregular, inrolled cap margin make it unlike any true gilled mushroom.
Overview
The Jelly Baby, Leotia lubrica, is a cup fungus relative rather than a true jelly fungus, despite its name and rubbery consistency. It belongs to the family Leotiaceae in the order Helotiales, a group of ascomycetes whose spores are produced in microscopic sacs (asci) lining an exposed fertile surface. In Leotia that fertile surface is wrapped over the top of a convex, gelatinised head, giving the fruit body its characteristic drumstick or gummy-sweet silhouette.
What makes the genus distinctive is the combination of a slimy, translucent-looking surface and a definite stalk. Most woodland ascomycetes are either flat discs, cups, or stalkless crusts; very few build a stalked, jelly-textured club. When several dozen fruit bodies push through moss and leaf litter together, the effect is unmistakable, and the group is one of the easiest ascomycetes for a beginner to place to genus.
Leotia lubrica is widespread across the temperate Northern Hemisphere and has also been reported from parts of Asia, Australasia and South America. Molecular work suggests that what has long been called L. lubrica is a complex of several closely related lineages that differ only subtly in colour and habitat, so field records cover a slightly broader range of variation than older guides imply.
How to identify it
Head
The fertile head is 5–20 mm across, convex to cushion-shaped, with a strongly inrolled and irregularly lobed or brain-wrinkled margin. Colour is typically dull ochre, olive-tinged yellow, or tawny buff, sometimes with a faint greenish cast at the edge. The surface is smooth and slippery when moist, drying slightly tacky and darker.
Stipe
The stalk is 20–60 mm tall and 3–8 mm thick, cylindrical or slightly compressed, often curved. It is usually paler than the head — cream, ochre-yellow, or faintly olive — and is minutely granular or finely scurfy from small darker flecks. Unlike the head, it is not slimy in dry conditions, though it becomes greasy after rain.
Flesh and spore print
The interior is gelatinous and translucent, elastic rather than brittle, and does not change colour when cut. There is no ring, no volva, and no gills, pores or teeth of any kind. Spores are long and narrow, often slightly curved and becoming multi-septate, and give a whitish deposit; because the fruit body is so small a print is seldom attempted in the field.
Where and when it grows
Jelly Baby grows on damp, humus-rich soil, on moss cushions, and among deep leaf litter in broadleaf and mixed woodland. It shows a strong preference for shaded, consistently moist ground — stream banks, ditch edges, mossy hollows and the sides of woodland paths — and can appear in impressive troops of dozens of fruit bodies scattered over a few square metres.
The main season runs from midsummer through autumn, extending later in mild, wet years. The species is widely recorded across Europe and North America and has been reported from temperate East Asia, with related lineages in the Southern Hemisphere.
Ecological role
Leotia lubrica has traditionally been treated as a saprotroph, breaking down fine organic matter and buried woody debris in the litter layer. Its fruit bodies arise from a mycelium threaded through humus rather than from any single visible piece of wood, which is why the fungus so often appears in mossy ground with no obvious substrate.
More recent isotope and root-tip studies have complicated that picture, with some evidence pointing toward a root-associated or partly mycorrhizal lifestyle in certain habitats. Either way, the fungus is a fixture of stable, undisturbed woodland soils, and its recurrence in the same mossy patches year after year suggests a long-lived, perennial mycelium.
Similar species
The closest relatives are the green-tinged Leotia species. Leotia viscosa has a distinctly dark green to blackish-green head contrasting with a yellow to whitish stalk, while Leotia atrovirens is green throughout, head and stalk alike. Faded specimens of L. lubrica can develop an olive tint, so check the stalk colour rather than the head alone.
Other stalked woodland ascomycetes are drier and differently shaped. Cudonia confusa has a similar overall outline but its head is thin, dry and pallid pinkish-buff rather than gelatinous, and its flesh is tough and non-elastic. Spathularia flavida is flattened and spatula-shaped, with the fertile tissue running down two opposite faces of the stalk. Earth tongues such as Geoglossum species are black and dry, with an elongated, compressed head rather than a rounded cushion.
