A two-host rust fungus that forms small brown galls with orange jelly horns on juniper in spring, then orange leaf spots with tubular outgrowths on hawthorn.
Overview
Juniper-Hawthorn Rust is a rust fungus with one of the most theatrical life cycles in the temperate landscape. On juniper it lives as a small, hard, reddish-brown gall on a twig; after warm spring rain the gall erupts in short, bright orange, gelatinous horns that swell to several times their dry size in a matter of hours, then collapse as they dry.
The genus Gymnosporangium, in the Pucciniaceae, is defined by this alternation between a juniper host, which carries the telial stage, and a host in the rose family — hawthorn, apple, pear, serviceberry or quince — which carries the aecial stage. The fungus cannot complete its cycle without both hosts growing within spore-dispersal range of one another.
On the hawthorn side, the fungus produces yellow to orange leaf spots that later develop a fringe of tiny pale tubes on the underside, giving infected foliage a distinctive bristly texture. The whole system is a striking example of an obligate parasite tied to two entirely unrelated plant families.
How to identify it
Juniper stage (galls and telial horns)
Galls are hard, roughly spherical to slightly irregular woody swellings on juniper twigs, typically under 2 cm across, chocolate to reddish brown, with a pitted or dimpled surface. They are perennial and may persist for several years. In wet spring weather each pit extrudes a short, wedge-shaped to conical orange-brown gelatinous horn, usually only a few millimetres long, giving the gall a shaggy orange coat while wet.
Hawthorn stage (leaf spots and aecia)
On hawthorn, apple, pear and related hosts the fungus produces rounded leaf spots 2–5 mm across, bright yellow-orange to rusty orange, often with a darker or reddish border, on the upper leaf surface. Beneath each spot, later in the season, clusters of slender pale tubular outgrowths (aecia) project from the leaf, splitting lengthwise and curling back into fine fringes as they release powdery orange spores.
Colour and texture
Every visible stage is orange to rusty in tone. The juniper horns are soft and jelly-like when hydrated and shrink to inconspicuous brown stubs when dry, so timing matters greatly for identification.
Overall
No cap, gills or stalk in the mushroom sense — the visible body is a gall on woody twigs or a spot-and-tube structure on leaves.
Where and when it grows
The fungus lives on living plants only. Its telial host is juniper, above all eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) and other native and planted junipers; its aecial hosts are members of the rose family, principally hawthorn (Crataegus), with apple, pear and serviceberry also affected.
It is common wherever junipers and hawthorns grow together, particularly in eastern and central North America, in old fields, hedgerows, fence lines, parkland and suburban plantings. Juniper galls are visible year-round as brown knots but only produce their orange horns during warm, wet spells in spring. Leaf symptoms on hawthorn develop through early summer, with the tubular aecia most obvious in mid to late summer.
Ecological role
Gymnosporangium globosum is an obligate biotrophic parasite: it feeds only on living host tissue and cannot be grown on dead material. Its macrocyclic, heteroecious life cycle runs from teliospores produced on the juniper horns, which germinate to release basidiospores carried by wind to hawthorn leaves; infection there produces spermogonia and then aecia, whose aeciospores blow back to juniper in late summer, initiating new twig galls that mature over the following year or two.
Because each spore stage travels only limited distances — typically a few hundred metres to a couple of kilometres — the disease is concentrated where both hosts are close together, and its intensity varies sharply with spring rainfall. Infection causes leaf spotting and, on juniper, localised twig galling; heavy years can cause early leaf drop on hawthorn, which in turn influences the fungus's own reserves for the following season.
Similar species
Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae, the cedar-apple rust, makes far larger juniper galls, commonly 2–5 cm across, which produce long, slender, bright orange gelatinous horns several centimetres in length; its aecial stage is on apple rather than hawthorn. Juniper-Hawthorn Rust galls stay under about 2 cm and bear short, wedge-shaped horns.
Gymnosporangium clavipes, the cedar-quince rust, does not form a discrete round gall at all: it produces elongated spindle-shaped swellings along juniper branches and its aecial stage attacks fruit, stems and thorns rather than leaf blades, forming white tubular aecia on distorted tissue. Non-rust confusions include juniper twig galls caused by insects, which are woody but never produce orange gelatinous horns, and hawthorn leaf spots caused by other fungi, which lack the tubular aecia beneath the spot.
