A heavy, bun-shaped brown bolete with a stout swollen white stipe carrying fine pale netting, and a sponge layer that ages from white through cream to olive-yellow without bruising blue.
Overview
King Bolete (Boletus edulis) is the archetype of the whole bolete group and the species against which other members of the genus are described. It is a large, solid mushroom with a smooth brown cap shaped like a bread roll, a thick barrel-shaped or bulbous stipe, and a spongy layer of vertical tubes under the cap instead of gills.
Boletus in the strict modern sense has been narrowed considerably by molecular work, with many former members moved to Imleria, Xerocomellus, Caloboletus, Rubroboletus and other genera. B. edulis remains at the core of the genus and heads a complex of very similar species, including the summer-fruiting B. reticulatus, the dark-capped B. aereus, the pine-associated B. pinophilus and several North American segregates.
It is one of the most widely distributed larger fungi in the northern hemisphere and has travelled with forestry plantings into the southern hemisphere, where it now fruits under introduced pines in New Zealand, South Africa and parts of South America. Its combination of great size, structural firmness and consistent field characters makes it a useful reference point for learning bolete anatomy.
How to identify it
Cap
8-30 cm across, occasionally much larger, hemispherical at first and expanding to a broad cushion or bun shape. The surface is smooth and slightly greasy or tacky in wet weather, matt and finely wrinkled when dry, and coloured warm chestnut, tan, mid-brown or occasionally almost white in young or shaded specimens. A characteristic narrow pale to whitish band runs around the extreme margin of young caps.
Pores
The tube layer beneath the cap is white and tightly packed when young, ageing through cream and yellow to a dull olive-yellow or olive-green in mature specimens. The pore mouths are small and round and do not stain blue when pressed, though they may bruise faintly brownish. Tubes are easily separated from the cap flesh as a single spongy mat.
Stipe
5-25 cm tall and 3-10 cm thick, exceptionally stout, distinctly swollen or barrel-shaped when young and elongating with age. It is whitish to pale buff or tan and carries a fine raised white network (reticulation) that is most obvious over the upper third and fades toward the base. There is no ring and no volva.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is thick, firm and white, and remains white when cut, with at most a faint pinkish tint directly under the cap cuticle. This unchanging flesh is a key character. The spore print is olive-brown.
Where and when it grows
Boletus edulis is ectomycorrhizal and grows on the ground in woodland, most frequently with Norway spruce and pine, and also with beech, oak, birch and fir. It favours well-drained, often somewhat acidic soils and appears along woodland rides, on mossy banks, at the edges of clearings and in plantations, sometimes in large troops but often singly or in small scattered groups.
Fruiting begins in summer where rainfall allows and reaches its peak from early to late autumn, generally following a period of heavy rain after warm weather. The species occurs throughout temperate and boreal Europe, across northern Asia to Japan, and widely in North America, and it has become established in the southern hemisphere wherever European conifers have been planted, forming mycorrhizas with the introduced trees.
Ecological role
The mycelium of B. edulis forms a dense ectomycorrhizal sheath around host root tips, penetrating between root cells to create the exchange network known as the Hartig net. Through it the fungus delivers water, nitrogen and phosphorus drawn from a large soil volume and receives carbohydrates from the tree in return. This dependence explains why the species cannot be grown on compost or logs and why fruiting is tied to the health of mature stands.
Fruiting bodies are massive and quickly colonised: fly larvae, beetles, slugs, squirrels and deer all use them heavily, and a mature cap may be riddled within days of emerging. The tubes are oriented vertically and shed spores passively into the air moving beneath the cap, so the mushroom actively adjusts its stipe growth to keep the tube layer level even on sloping ground.
Similar species
Bitter Bolete (Tylopilus felleus) is the closest structural match, with a similar brown cap and stout stipe, but its pore surface turns distinctly pink or flesh-coloured with age, its spore print is pinkish-brown rather than olive-brown, and the stipe network is coarse and dark brown, standing out strongly against a paler ground over most of the stipe length. Summer Bolete (Boletus reticulatus) is very close indeed but has a duller, drier, often finely cracked cap and a conspicuous network covering the whole stipe from top to bottom.
Bay Bolete (Imleria badia) has a darker chestnut cap and pores that stain blue-green within seconds of being pressed, and its stipe is finely fibrillose brown without any raised netting. Members of Caloboletus and Rubroboletus are separated by yellow flesh that blues instantly, red or orange pore surfaces, and red tones in the stipe reticulation.
