Lactarius scrobiculatus Identification Guide

First Impression And The Ground You Are Standing On

This is a big, heavy, conspicuously yellow milkcap, and in a good year it fruits in scattered troops that catch the eye from twenty paces. The first impression is of a robust, slightly untidy mushroom sitting low in the moss, with a broad ochre-yellow cap that looks slightly greasy in damp weather and a stubby stem that seems too short for the cap it carries.

Where you are standing matters. Lactarius scrobiculatus is a partner of conifers, above all spruce, and to a lesser extent fir, in cool montane and boreal forest on acid soils. The classic setting is a mossy spruce stand at moderate to high elevation, along a track edge or in a damp hollow where feather mosses and bilberry cover the ground. Late summer through autumn is the fruiting period, following the same rain-driven pattern as the rest of the milkcap season, and specimens often stand half-buried, pushing moss and needle litter up on the cap.

Because it is ectomycorrhizal, the tree matters more than the soil. If there is no spruce or fir within reach of the root zone, doubt the identification and start again.

Reading The Cap

Caps run from 6 to 20 cm across, with well-grown specimens in the upper part of that range genuinely massive. Young caps are convex with a strongly inrolled margin; mature ones flatten and then become broadly depressed or funnel-shaped in the centre, while the margin only slowly unrolls and often stays tucked under even in old age.

The colour is a distinctive dull to bright yellow: straw, ochre-yellow, or yellow with faint pale-brown or orange-brown zones toward the margin. Zonation is variable and often weak, so do not lean on it. In damp weather the surface is viscid and picks up needles and grit; in dry weather it becomes matt and slightly silky.

Now examine the margin closely, because it carries a key character. On young and mid-aged specimens the outer band of the cap is bearded: covered with coarse, matted, woolly hairs that form a shaggy fringe, sometimes long enough to hang below the gill edge. In old specimens the beard wears away and can be almost gone at the extreme margin, so check several fruit bodies of different ages.

Gills, Stipe And The Pitted Surface

Turn a cap over. The gills are decurrent to shortly so, running a little way down the stem, close to crowded, narrow, and whitish to pale cream or straw. With handling and age they stain yellow-brown to dull ochre. Look along the gill edge with a lens: it should be even, not serrated.

The stipe is the feature that gives the species its name. It is short relative to the cap — usually 3 to 8 cm — and thick, often 2 to 4 cm across, cylindrical to slightly tapering downward, firm at first and becoming hollow with age. Its ground colour is whitish to pale yellow, and scattered across it are the scrobicules: distinct rounded to elliptical pits, shallow depressions a few millimetres across, coloured a deeper yellow, ochre or brownish yellow than the surrounding surface. They are often concentrated toward the top of the stem and can be sparse in some collections, so look right around the stipe in raking light before concluding that they are absent.

There is no ring, no volva and no cortina. The base tapers slightly and is bound into the litter with whitish mycelium.

Flesh, Latex And Colour Change

This is where the identification is confirmed, and the test takes ten seconds.

Cut the cap in half from top to bottom, or simply score the gills with a sharp blade. The flesh is white to pale cream, thick, firm, and brittle in the way all milkcaps are — snap a piece of gill and it breaks cleanly rather than tearing in fibres, because the tissue is packed with rounded cells rather than long threads.

Within a moment of cutting, white latex wells out of the damaged tissue. Watch it on the blade, on the cut face and on a white surface. Within seconds to a minute it changes decisively to a strong sulphur or lemon yellow. This is not a slow, ambiguous drift toward cream; it is an obvious colour change that you can see happening. The flesh at the cut then discolours yellow to yellow-brown, and drops of latex that fall on the gills leave yellow stains that darken to ochre.

Record the change on white paper rather than against the mushroom, since the yellow cap will disguise it. Record also that the latex is copious in fresh damp specimens and can be scarce in old, dry, hollow-stemmed ones — in a drought a weak reaction is a property of the specimen, not the species.

Taking A Spore Print

Set a mature cap gills-down on white paper or, better, on glass, cover it, and leave it several hours. The deposit is pale — cream to pale ochre with a yellowish cast — and thicker prints read distinctly warmer than the pure white prints of many other genera.

Under a microscope the spores are broadly ellipsoid, about 7 to 9 by 6 to 7 micrometres, and ornamented with warts and short ridges that connect into a partial network. The ornamentation stains blue-black in iodine, a general feature of the genus that is worth confirming if you have the reagent. Cap and stipe tissue show the characteristic milkcap anatomy: clusters of large rounded cells and abundant latex-carrying hyphae running through the flesh.

Substrate And Season Summarised

Ectomycorrhizal with spruce, sometimes fir, on acid, often sandy or stony soils in cool forest. Frequently among mosses, bilberry and needle litter, and often along shaded forest roads where the ground stays damp. Separating It From Look-Alikes On Structure Alone

The critical group is the bearded milkcaps, and the separations turn on cap colour, latex reaction and tree partner.

Lactarius resimus shares the shaggy inrolled margin and white latex turning yellow, but its cap is white to cream, sometimes with a faint yellowish flush at the centre, its stipe is usually smooth or with only faint depressions, and it associates with birch and other broadleaf trees. A white bearded cap with a smooth stem points here.

Lactarius torminosus has a bearded margin as well, but the cap is pink to pinkish-buff and conspicuously zoned, the stipe is slender and smooth without pits, and it grows with birch. Its latex is white and does not change to yellow, which by itself resolves the pair.

Lactarius citriolens is closer and genuinely difficult: a yellowish bearded cap with white latex turning yellow, but it associates with broadleaf trees, its beard is longer and more conspicuously shaggy, and its stipe pits are usually fewer or absent.

Lactarius repraesentaneus is the northern spruce and birch species most likely to be confused in the field, since it is also large, yellow and bearded with a pitted stem. Cut it and watch the latex: it turns lilac to violet on the flesh and gills rather than yellow, and old specimens develop purple-grey bruising. That colour difference is unambiguous.

Lactarius intermedius is a stout pale yellow species of broadleaf woodland whose latex also yellows, but its cap margin is at most faintly downy rather than shaggily bearded.

The orange-latex milkcaps, such as Lactarius deterrimus and its relatives, are easy to resolve: their latex is orange from the outset, they stain green with age and handling, their caps are orange with strong concentric zones, and their margins are smooth rather than bearded.

Lactarius controversus itself has a smooth to faintly hairy whitish cap flushed with wine-pink patches, pale pink gills, white unchanging latex and a strict association with poplars and willows.

A Compact Field Sequence
