A small pale dapperling with a flesh-pink to tan cap finely broken into concentric scales, girdled fibres on the lower stem and no true ring, common on mulched garden ground.

Overview

Lepiota subincarnata, published for many years under the name Lepiota josserandii, is a small member of the same tight cluster of dapperlings as Lepiota brunneoincarnata. All share a modest size, a pale cap broken into concentric scales with a pinkish cast, a girdled rather than ringed stipe, and small smooth ellipsoid spores lacking the spur found in the clypeolaria group.

Compared with its close relative, this species is on average smaller, paler and pinker, its scales finer and more evenly scattered so that the concentric banding is less sharply defined and the cap can look almost uniformly flesh-tinted from a distance. The pinkish tone extends onto the stipe fibres and often into the flesh of the stem base.

It is above all a fungus of made ground. The spread of bark and woodchip mulch through gardens, municipal planting and landscaped car parks has given it a great deal of new habitat, and it now fruits regularly in places where no dapperling would have grown a generation ago. Confident naming within this group generally requires microscopic confirmation.

How to identify it

Cap

2-4 cm across, convex to broadly bell-shaped, flattening with age and often retaining a low central hump. The disc is smooth and darker, pinkish-brown to reddish-tan, while the rest of the surface breaks into small, fine, flattened scales of pale pinkish-brown on a whitish to flesh-pink ground, arranged in loose concentric zones that are less sharply banded than in related species. The margin may show faint fibrillose veil traces when very young.

Gills

Free from the stipe, crowded, narrow to moderately broad, white to pale cream, occasionally with a faint pinkish flush in age, edges even.

Stipe

2-5 cm long and 3-6 mm thick, pale pinkish-buff, smooth in the upper part and covered below by fine pinkish-brown fibrils that form indistinct girdle-like zones. There is no persistent ring, only a vague fibrous boundary where the girdled zone stops. The base is barely swollen, with no rim, bulb or sac, and often flushes pink internally.

Flesh & spore print

Flesh white to pale pinkish, very thin in the cap, with a faint sweetish or fruity odour. The spore print is white. The spores are small, smooth and ellipsoid to slightly ovoid without any projecting spur, and are dextrinoid in the standard stains used for the genus.

Where and when it grows

It grows on rich, disturbed, humus-laden ground, and is especially frequent on bark and woodchip mulch in garden beds, ornamental plantings, car park borders and municipal landscaping. It also occurs on path edges, in lawns with buried organic debris, in greenhouses and in the leaf litter of parks and gardens under planted trees.

The species is widespread through Europe and North America and has spread with horticultural materials into many temperate regions. Fruiting is mainly from summer into late autumn, with fruit bodies emerging singly or in small scattered troops, often within weeks of fresh mulch being laid and repeating in the same bed over several seasons.

Ecological role

Lepiota subincarnata is a saprotroph living on plant litter and small woody fragments. Its mycelium colonises the interior of woodchip and bark mulch and the humus beneath, breaking down cellulose and lignin residues and forming part of the fungal community that converts fresh mulch into crumbly soil organic matter over a few years.

Because its habitat is created and repeatedly renewed by people, the species behaves as a strongly synanthropic fungus, moving between sites in bulk mulch, compost and container plants. Within a mulch bed it belongs to the intermediate stage of succession, arriving after the first flush of rapid colonisers such as inkcaps and before slower, more persistent wood decayers take over.

Similar species

Lepiota brunneoincarnata is the nearest relative and is separated by its darker, more vinaceous-brown and more clearly concentric cap scales, a slightly stouter build, and a preference for short grass and open calcareous ground rather than mulch; microscopy is often needed for certainty. Lepiota cristata is smaller and whiter with sharply contrasting reddish-brown concentric scales, a distinct small ring and a strong sharp odour.

Lepiota clypeolaria is much larger and slimmer with coarse ochre-brown fibrous scales, a ragged woolly cap margin and a loose cottony sheath on the lower stipe, and it has spurred spores. Leucoagaricus leucothites is far larger with a smooth white cap, a well-developed movable ring and gills that flush pink with age, none of which fits this species.

Why is it so common on mulch?
