Lumpy Bracket Identification Guide
A practical read of Trametes gibbosa on beech stumps: the thick algae-greened shelf, the hump at the attachment, and the radially elongated slot-like pores that separate it from every other Trametes.
The First Impression
A cut beech stump in damp deciduous woodland, and a thick, chalky, off-white shelf projecting horizontally from the side of it, often several shelves in a loose tier. From two metres away the two things that register are thickness and colour: this is a substantial, solid-looking bracket, not a papery frill, and it is pale cream rather than banded brown. Very often the back half of the upper surface is green, which is algae growing on a long-lived, damp, rough surface rather than anything fungal, but it is such a consistent feature on mature material that it works as a field cue.
Get a hand on it. The name is earned at the attachment: there is a distinct swelling, a hump or gibbosity, where the bracket meets the wood, so the shelf is thickest at the back and tapers to a blunt rim. Old brackets can be found in any month, since the fruit body persists long after it stops growing, but the best-looking material appears from late summer into winter.
Reading the Upper Surface
The bracket is broadly attached to the wood with no stalk, semicircular to fan-shaped or bracket-shaped, commonly 8 to 20 cm across and 2 to 5 cm thick near the base. Young growth is finely velvety to the touch; with age the surface smooths out and becomes matt and slightly rough.
Colour begins white to cream, ages to straw and then a dingy grey-buff, and picks up algal green and, in wet woods, moss and dirt. Concentric zoning is present but weak: faint low ridges and slight tonal bands rather than the sharp multicoloured rings of its better-known relative. Radial ridging and slight lumpiness are common. The margin is thick and blunt, whitish, and carries a narrow sterile band on the underside before the pores begin.
The Pore Surface Is the Whole Identification
Turn the bracket up or crouch under it, and use a lens. The pore surface is whitish to cream, ageing pale buff or slightly ochre, and it does not change colour when you scratch or rub it, beyond perhaps a faint buff dulling from handling.
What matters is the shape of the pores. They are not round. They are drawn out radially into slots typically 1 to 2 mm long and only about 0.5 mm wide, all pointing outward from the attachment like the lines of a fan. With age, and especially towards the margin, the walls between adjacent slots break down so that the surface becomes a shallow maze, and at the very rim the slots can lengthen into short gill-like plates. Counting pores per millimetre, the standard polypore measurement, is close to meaningless here; measure the slot length instead.
The tube layer behind the pores is 3 to 8 mm deep, whitish, and clearly demarcated from the flesh above it. There is a single tube layer, not the stacked annual layers of a perennial bracket.
Flesh, Texture and Section
Cut the bracket vertically from margin to attachment with a strong knife. The flesh is thick, up to 2 or 3 cm at the hump, white, corky to fibrous, and uniform: no dark line, no zoning, no gelatinous band. The absence of a thin black line just beneath the upper surface is worth checking deliberately, because that line is present in several superficially similar grey brackets.
Fresh material is tough and slightly elastic and cuts with resistance; dry material is hard and light. It does not snap cleanly like a brittle mushroom. The smell is faint and pleasantly fungal.
Getting a Spore Print From a Bracket
Brackets are awkward but not impossible. Cut a wedge that includes a good area of fresh pore surface, prop it pores-downward over a sheet of black paper (the spores are white, so a pale background shows nothing), enclose the whole thing under a box or bowl to hold humidity, and leave it overnight. Actively sporulating autumn material gives a fine white dust.
In the field there is often a shortcut. Where brackets grow in a tier, the upper surface of the lower bracket collects the spore fall from the one above and shows a white bloom; the same happens on bark and dead leaves immediately below a productive shelf. Under a microscope the spores are small, cylindrical, smooth, colourless and not amyloid.
Substrate, Ecology and Season
Trametes gibbosa is a white-rot saprotroph, and occasionally a weak parasite, of dead broadleaf wood. In Europe it is overwhelmingly a beech fungus: cut stumps, fallen trunks and standing dead beech account for most records. Lime, hornbeam, birch, poplar and sycamore are also used.
A point of ecology helps confirm identity. Lumpy Bracket is frequently found on stumps already colonised by Turkeytail, and the two are often side by side on the same face; there is good evidence that gibbosa mycelium attacks and takes over versicolor mycelium, which explains the pattern. Finding a thick cream shelf sitting among thin banded ones on the same beech stump is a common and characteristic scene.
Fruit bodies are annual but persistent, so weathered, blackened, moss-covered brackets from previous years are frequent and can be misleading; always judge from the freshest growth at the margin.
Separating the Close Look-Alikes
Trametes versicolor is the default confusion because it shares the same stumps. It is thin, 1 to 3 mm, flexible enough to bend without breaking, strongly and sharply zoned in browns, greys, blues and buffs, silky-velvety on top, and its pores are small and round at 3 to 5 per mm. Thickness plus pore shape settles it in seconds.
Trametes hirsuta is thicker than versicolor but still well under a centimetre, with a densely stiff-hairy grey-white upper surface and small round pores.
Trametes pubescens is thin, uniformly cream, finely downy, with round to slightly angular pores.
Lenzites betulina shares the pale, hairy, algae-greened upper surface, but the underside is composed of true radiating gill-like plates from the start, running unbroken from attachment to margin, rather than slots that only break down with age.
Daedaleopsis confragosa has a maze-like to gill-like underside as well, but the cap is zoned in reddish-browns, the flesh is thinner, the substrate is usually willow or birch, and, decisively, the pore surface bruises pink to reddish where you scratch it. Lumpy Bracket does not bruise.
Cerrena unicolor is thinner and greyer, with a maze-like pore surface and a distinct black line beneath the upper tomentum in section.
Bjerkandera adusta has a grey to blackish pore surface, thin flesh and a black line.
Fomes fomentarius is hoof-shaped, perennial, hard, grey-brown and crusty above, with round pores and stacked tube layers visible in section.
A Two-Second Field Test
If the bracket is thicker than your thumb, cream rather than banded, humped at the back, growing on beech, and the underside is made of radial slots rather than round holes, you have Trametes gibbosa. Photograph the pore surface with a coin for scale and cut one section; those two images carry the record.
